International Championship Wrestling was an independent professional wrestling promotion based in Lexington, Kentucky that operated from 1978 until 1984.
It was run by WCW Hall of Famer Angelo Poffo, the father of Randy Savage and Lanny Poffo.
Throughout its history, ICW was considered an "outlaw" promotion, in which it was not a member of the National Wrestling Alliance and promoted shows in direct competition against NWA regional territories.
And Angelo Poffo established International Championship Wrestling as a rival to Ron Fuller's Southeastern Championship Wrestling and
Nick Gulas NWA Mid-American territory,
extending into Verne Gagne's American Wrestling Association and Dick the bruiser’s World Wrestling Association territories by 1981.
Later on they'd come in direct competition with Jerry Lawler and Jerry Jarrett's Continental Wrestling Association as well,
operating in their territories and even managed to get several wrestlers to leave Southeastern and the CWA to join ICW.
This, among other issues, would result in a series of lawsuits between Angelo Poffo and other NWA-affiliated organizations during the late 1970s and early 80s.
The main stars of ICW were Poffo's sons Randy and Lanny who frequently traded the promotion's heavyweight title between each other; in fact
only two other men (Ronnie Garvin and Paul Christy) held the ICW World Heavyweight Championship in the 6 years the title existed.
While Randy and Lanny were the focus of the federation, it did feature many other stars such as Ronnie Garvin, Crusher Broomfield, Bob Orton, Jr., Bob Roop, Rip Rogers, "Pistol" Pez Whatley, Ox Baker, and the Devil's Duo with their manager Izzy Slapawitz.
Miss Elizabeth, who would later gain fame in the WWe ,
got her start in professional wrestling as an on-camera host of ICW's weekly TV show where she also started her romance with Randy Savage.
In 1984 the promotion closed down due to dwindling attendance and its assets were bought by Jerry Jarrett and Jerry Lawler.
Due to the fans' knowledge of the extremely bitter rivalry between ICW and CWA, Randy Savage was able to migrate to the CWA and begin a memorable feud with Jerry Lawler that established Randy Savage as a world-class superstar.
Paul Christy, the wrestler who had ended Randy Savage's final reign as ICW World Champion,
started a new ICW when Poffo's promotion folded.
He ran the promotion for a few years with little publicity or success before closing it down in the late 1980s.

ICW was actually two promotions that merged. The Poffos had booked in the Maritimes and decided to start up in lexington, running opposition to Gulas and Jarrett, as a way to promote Randy, who had worked for Gulas, and Lanny, to a lesser extent. Lanny says he was booked to go work in Los Angeles, when his father started and he was guilted into giving it up to stay and work for the family. Meanwhile, a group broke away from the Fuller's, in Knoxville and rann All-Star Wrestling, in opposition. that group consisted of Ronnie Garvin (the Southeastern Champion), Bob Roop, Bob Orton and Izzy Slapowitz. They merged with the Poffos and it was briefly called International All-Star Wrestling, before they switched to just ICW. Roop and Orton left and Garvin stayed. Izzy was there for a bit, before leaving, with Sword and Vines also leaving (though Vines came back in). The ICW title was basically a gimmick for Randy, as he and Lanny had done a program for the International title in the Maritimes. It seems to be where Lanny was credited as champion. I've never seen footage or stills of him as ICW champion, only listed, based on the promotions tv statements. George Gray started there as Crusher Broomfield, then went on to be the One Man Gang (which was Ronnie Garvin's nickname) in Dallas and Oklahoma, before going to the WWF with the name and being turned into Akeem. Pez Whatley wrestled for Gulas and came into ICW, before moving on to Georgia and Mid-Atlantic, some shots for the WWF, Continental Wrestling federation (as Willie B Hurt), some time with the UWFI, in Japan, and then for WCW, at the Power Plant. Rip Rogers started out in the WWA and Detroit, then for the Poffos, before working in places like Calgary, Kansas City, Georgia, Alabama, Puerto Rico and WCW. He was part of the trio, the Convertible Blonds, with Gary Royal and Rick Starr (not the ballet gimmick wrestler from the 50s and 60s), as a take-off of the Freebirds. Royal went to Mid-Atlantic and Starr worked in Tennessee. Rip then teamed with Pez, as well as singles feuds with Lanny. Lanny teamed with George Weingeroff, son of manager Saul Weingeroff, who was legally blind (limited vision but able to see with glasses; since corrected by surgery), who had been a collegiate wrestler at UT Chattanooga, with Pez Whatley. Weingeroff was also on on-air matchmaker and used to put over some of the others, in squash matches. Ronnie Garvin kept the Fuller's Southeastern title belt. Fuller tried to sue in court; but, wouldn't break kayfabe to admit the champion was chosen and the court ruled it was Garvin's property, as champion. ICW did not run opposition to the AWA as they were not in an AWA territory. memphis was not an AWA promotion; it was an independent and started booking the AWA champion, when the NWA champions stopped coming through as often, due to payoffs vs bigger territories. They rechristened the Southern titles as AWA Southern titles. They also didn't run opposition to the WWA or Detroit, as they used talent from both promotions and only ran in places where they weren't promoting. Angelo had worked for Bruiser & Snyder (WWA) and the Sheik (Detroit) and had good relations with them. His opposition was mainly Jarrett, as he didn't run in Gulas' area of Nashville and Chattanooga. Gulas was in his waning days, anyway. Elizabeth worked at a health club, where she met Randy, which is why she ended up doing local live show spot interviews, then hosting the tv show, after they stopped doing it in a Lexington studio. before that, sports broadcaster Tim Tyler was the host, and John Beck, before that. Liz met Randy, then worked tv; not the other way around. Guys like Ernie Lad, the Sheik and Ox Baker only came through for brief shots. they were not long term regulars.

Despite what you hear, Lanny was not the Champion, Randy was. Lanny holding the title was fictitious, carried over from their time in Canada. Lanny was a proven hand, which is why he was in the WWF. Randy help open the door for him; but, Lanny did everything asked of him and earned his keep. He was an experienced guy who made other talent look good. That was the role of the enhancement guys. A "jobber" had a role and was just as respected as the stars, in the old days; some even more so. They helped develop young guys and the real pros appreciated them. it's only "smart marks" who crap on them.

Great memories! As a young boy, I used to attend matches at the Cape Arena building in Cape Girardeau, MO. My mom and dad took me to an ICW card as my first exposure to live wrestling. Randy Savage defended his title against Ox Baker in the main event. I remember one match I missed toward the end of the ICW run: Randy Savage and Paul Christie vs. Bart Batten and Bruiser Brody. Those were some of the best days of wrestling. Sorry to see them pass into history. The ICW will always be my favorite.

From what I been hearing over the years, there isn't much of a library. They used to copy over previous shows because they were a very low budget promotion which is a shame. Lawler has some of the later episodes and there are several Independent dvds that put them out. But it's hard to find full episodes of a lot of the earlier stuff.

According to Lanny, the tapes were sold a long time ago, to some kind of oil company and appear to have been lost or are just part of a private collection. What little footage exists is right here, more or less, on KZbin.

Not exactly. Angelo booked the Maritimes, for a time, with Randy and Lanny on top. Angelo also wrestled as the Carpetbagger. They feuded over the Maritimes version of the International title, which may have been where they drew their lineage for the ICW title. Randy defeated Lanny in Halifax, for the International title, which is the same location and time that ICW claimed Randy defeated Lanny for the ICW World title.

Southeastern was Knoxville and Alabama. The Fullers shut down Knoxville, when business died and sold off to Flair and Blackjack Mulligan. they continued to run Alabama, as Southeastern, then changed the name to Continental Championship Wrestling. they sold that and it became Continental Wrestling federation, when guys like Eddie Gilbert and Pez Whatley were there. Memphis broke away from Nick Gulas' Mid-America territory and used the name of the Continental Wrestling Association for the governing body, when they created a World title for Jerry Lawler, since the NWA was never going to let him be champion. They then started bringing in the AWA title, with Lawler facing the AWA champ.

Wish this was longer. I actually liked ICW bk then. My uncle lived in Lexington where the show was taped. Not long after it went on the air Randy Savage moved into the house rt next door to my uncle. Thats when I found out about the show. I was just a kid then but I was old enough to see the parties and the fights at Randy's house. I'll never forget seeing ric flair for the first time there and he and randy got in in a fight in the front yard that poured out on the street. Ronnie Garvin and some other guy that was big but I didnt rec him, they broke the fight up. Then they started drinking and was civil again with ea other. Haha. Randy wasn't big as popular then though. This was before miss Elizabeth also. She started working on the show giving announcements. Yeah, I loved ICW back then. They got big names through there and kinda had a Memphis wrestling feel to it. I hated to see it go.
