I cried a lot when my dad didn't want to take me to the movie theater the only day the Great Waltz was due to be projected...back in 1969 or 1970 in Lima Peru.

Impressed me most is how the inspiration to compose the music came. The beauty of nature, the people, the passion & zest of talented lovers, the forest, the horse, the pleasant and relaxing mood, the beat, ... merged together and made a master piece!
@barrhavener4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback. This is just a Hollywood fiction and in real life, Johann Strauss did not compose the music when he was riding on a horse drawn cart with his extra-marital girlfriend through the Vienna Woods. He actually wrote this piece of music in his home, in front of a piano, with his real life wife Henrietta "Jetty" Treffz sitting next to him. Sorry if I ruin your romantic sensation with "Tales from the Vienna Woods", but by all means he and his family members (father, brothers Josef and Edward) were really talented composers. While you must stay home during this Corona Virus pandemic, may as well explore and enjoy their other compositions such as Emperor Waltz, You and You, One Day When We Were Young,, Voices of Spring, etc., all available on You-Tube.

Miliza Corjus has the most beautiful voice. My favorite scene in this full length movie is in the drawing room as she sings the first waltz her guests have heard, which was considered scandalous, as the amazed Strauss plays the piano. The crowd response and her playfulness are amusing and a delight. I played that segment so many times my videotape broke.

The soprano is the famous German coloratura Militza Korjus, who made only one film in Hollywood, The Great Waltz. America did not treat her well; The Met did not need her because of the rash of emigrees. She did make a film in Mexico, but a car accident ruined her stage career.

Fernand Gravet is the actor who played Strauss. Some camera work in THE GREAT WALTZ is phenomenal - you won't see such quality technique in today's films. Miliza was a great singer and remained active (concerts, recordings, opera) many years after the film.

that one camera work in the park was basicly re-done in a Episode of the original DALLAS when JR and Bobby travelled to Vienna and appearing on a ball/party.

There is so much music in the midst of nature. We only have to listen intently to it. Johann Strauss listened intently as he rode through the woods and composed a lovely waltz that he named "Tales from the Vienna Woods" Waltzes are invariably soothing and uplifting. They are eternal gifts to be cherished. Let us be grateful forever and a day.

Actually the movie is a fiction - Johann Strauss did not compose the Waltz as he rode through Vienna Woods on a horse buggy with his "extra-marital girlfriend" Carla Donna. In fact, he composed "Tales from the Vienna Woods" in front of a piano with the help of his actual real life wife ( Henrietta Treffz, herself was an opera singer) inside their summer cottage.

An amazing and magical musical number a la Hollywood from "The Great Waltz" with Miliza Korjus. Luise Rainer who passed away yesterday in a supporting role. Some camera work in this movie are fantastic. In the 13th Season of Dallas in the Episode the Great Texas Waltz was made a homage to this movie. Did anyone noticed it?

Miliza Korjus was brought to Hollywood sight unseen two and a half years before The Great Waltz was made. It was reported her weight was close to 250lbs at the time. It took two years for her to lose more than 100lbs only then did she get to do the film only after Jeanette MacDonald turned it down to make the film San Francisco stating it was a bio about composer Strauss and a historical piece she didn't want to play second fiddle. San Francisco cleaned up at the box office in 1936 for MGM and her.

I wondered why the second soprano was not there. I thought they rejected Miiza and took on Jeanette macdonald as there wasn't enough room for two divas at the time.

The official name of the song is known as Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald (in English: Tales from the Vienna Woods), Op. 325, composed by Johann Strauss II in 1868. The song was adopted by MGM in the movie "the Great Waltz" in 1938. If you do not like this movie version, you can hear a more modern performance sung by the Vienna Boys Choir here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4aVaIt4o5mnrdksi=5Kzo2KYE_6nMVEoh
