Imagine you are in an old house by a lake. It is night and there is a wild storm outside, the wind screaming around the grey stone walls. Far below the house, in a gloomy vault, lies the dead body of the Lady Madeleine in her coffin. In the room with you is her brother, looking at you with wild, mad eyes. Imagine this... and you are in the House of Usher.
Turn the page, and a Black Cat is hanging by its neck from a tree. Turn another, and you will hear music as a thousand people sing and dance at a wonderful masked ball. You are now in the castle of Prince Prospero. Inside, all is light and life and pleasure, but outside the castle walls walks the terrible masked figure of the Red Death...
These stories will take you into the shadowy world of the imagination, into a land of terror and dreams and madness.
Don’t read them alone!

Why has the narrator added & subtracted words from Poe's original text? I'm amazed anyone would think they could alter Edgar's words, as if you think maybe you can 'better' his writings, or do you think he made mistakes? either way, not good.

This is exactly what they were trying to do with this edition. This is a simplified edition for foreing learners to study English. It's not the original.

This has been rewritten , and simplified for a modern or young listener. It should have been narrated as Poe originally wrote it . An American accent would have helped with the atmosphere. The sense of dread has been greatly diminished.

thank you. it`s very useful to get a better listening comprehension. but, i`ve got a question: some stories are different from my book. i mean, they change some words, even phrases. is it normal??? do you know why this happen???

It is quite natural that when some publishing companies reprint the stories, they could touch, refine and polish the original version here and there. When the expressions and words seem quite outdated and not-the-best, they could replace words as long as maintaining its authenticity and identity. Even the same publishing refine the same novel changing some words. I hope I can be of help to your understanding.
