Theres actually a theory for the little twist at the end that can be found in a side quest in the game only. SPOILER WARNING. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED . . . . . . In the game they rescue another cheagle in Ortion cavern that they name Star. When Jade questions him later using Mieu's ring he reveals that he was replicated but after a while he suddenly fell ill and died but when then he felt something flow into him and then he woke up again only to find his replica is gone. In this case instead of Luke re-merging with Asch and disappearing, its more like Luke's "soul" in Asch's body through Lorelei's power since Asch is dead and doesnt have his own ''soul'' anymore. If you notice Jade's reaction at the end he knows thats what happened. Also notice the sword at the end. Its positioned the same way Luke always had it and its Luke who made the promise with Tear not Asch.

Nah, the big bang does not applies because it had already technically happened. When Asch dies in Eldrant, Asch's spirit enters Luke. THAT'S the big bang. So Luke ended being dominant. What happened at the end is not the big Bang, it's Lorelei helping Luke survive by using Asch's body.

not true, van and sync both got their bodies back from using lorelai's power in game. Since both bodies were right there, there's no reason why lorelai couldn't have just brought both of them back. The thing is the literal God of that universe. I think this is Luke for sure because Asch had no reason to show up to the ceremony of the guy he hates. I think it's definitely Luke. Tear may have been dubious about the identity when she asks "Why are you here?" However, when Luke replies "Besides, I promised, didn't I?" it kind of proves it's Luke to her, as she starts crying and immediately begins to move towards him. Whether it's Luke's or Asch's body (I think the idea of Luke's mind inside of Asch's body as a reward from Lorelei to stop the separation process has always been a well considered concept), the personality and the mind is definitely that of Luke. That man in spirit is Luke, it's un-deniable. Has anyone noticed that Natalia doesn't seem to give a shit? Also, that Luke is quite clearly focusing on Tear. If Natalia had gotten any kind of visual recognition in the scene, I would of considered it more ambiguous, but sadly she just doesn't show any kind of feeling of the possibility of it being Asch. I say sadly because they tried to make an ambiguous ending, and failed by making the Tear+Luke interact evidently in a passionate way, while Natalia takes a back-seat as though the person she loves hasn't returned. They always intended it to be Luke, they just wanted to cause speculation by changing the ending before release. They could've tried a little harder to make it less of who it is. Still, it is only an opinion. Also; loved this game. Never played it on the PS2 and I recently bought it for the 3DS, I didn't play it for like a week after first trying because the DS's controls pissed me off (used to console Tales games), but I'm glad I over-came the controls and delved into it. Absolutely loved it.

久々に観て改めて思ったこと。 アニメのタッチも良かった()とは思うけど、 やっぱりゲームで差し込まれてたアニメーションの質でアニメを作ってくれた方が良かったかなって思った。 話数的にも期間的にも難しいのはわかってるけど、別のシリーズは2クール使ってやってるし、OVAとかでも良かったから、ゲームで差し込まれてたあのクオリティでアニメを観たかったなぁ と初見から何年経ってても思う。

Pretty clear by the way he says "Besides, I promised, didn't I?" that the comment was directed at Tear. Not something Asch would say. While it's possible it's a combination of the two, I like to think that after all the hard times Luke and Tear went through throughout the game, the two finally get some happiness when all is said and done. Makes for a better ending imo.

I think I need to explain what happened to Luke. The first thing to note is that Asch died before his big bang. So, the side-quest with the cheagle doesn't really explain what happened to Luke at the end, because it is the replica that survives. Just after Asch's death, his power all went to Luke. Asch's spirit was absorbed by Luke, the dominant one. I don't know if the memories went with it but it doesn't seem like it. Also, at the end, when Luke and Asch are in the core, we see Luke's body disappear and Asch's hand twitch. It is because Luke's spirit is going into Asch's body. That way, Luke can survive. ( and he still has Asch's spirit inside of him ) What you see at the end is Luke in Asch's body. That explains the looks of his hair and the way he wear his sword ( in his back, on the left side ). And why he went to Tataroo Valley and talk to Tear and mention his promise and all his friends are there and etc... Finally, would you really think the developpers would create a big cliffhanger like this with Luke and Tear and just point Asch at the end? It would make no sense. Just look at the faces of his friends, we all know its Luke. But it's still sad that Asch died, feel bad for him ...

Yeah. It doesn't make sense, narratively or logically, for it to be Asch who survives. I don't actually see how it's meant to be ambiguous, lol. I hated Asch throughout the game though, so no pity from me. Then again, I also disliked Tear and post-Akzerieuth Luke (for the most part). I was kind of disappointed that the characters weren't that great, since I loved the ones in Vesperia.

The Tales series is amazing. I recently just finished my first playthrough of Tales of the Abyss, and the ending made me cry. I'd say it's at par with the Final Fantasy series. Most of the entries in Final Fantasy had memorable endings.

***** Well from what i remember from the game, Jade points out that Luke is a imperfect copy i think somewhere prior to the tower scene. He uses this logic to justify why luke is the one who should be the sacrifice. What ends up happening is that luke and asch both take the recoil from the "arte" or whatever you may call it and share the effect. But that is besides the point. I strongly think it is Luke and am able to bend enough to say it is luke in asch's body. Something i dont think people realize is that this is two years after the final fight. Alot could of happned in those two years, for example Luke could have been recovering inside the core or maybe Asch was revived and decide to hide from the world. The second theory of mine can also explain why it took two years for him to come back, because he was searching the globe for Asch, found him and found out Asch didnt want to live with Luke and the others. Would explain why his clothes are different and also damaged

I think what happened was that since Asch was dead, Loreli, having a newfound respect for Luke and knowing he was about to vanish, gave him a chance at life, and was able to merge Luke into Asch's body. Of course we're really only able to speculate about it, since the game creators have said that its left up to our imaginations to figure out what happened to them, and if its Luke or Asch standing there, but the evidence points to a merging, and Luke in Asch's body.

So many wrong answers. The man at the ending was neither Luke nor Ash. There was a little side-quest explaining what would happen if a replica combined to become one with his original. In which, the original had survived. Except in this case, Asch was too weak but faintly still alive to be the dominant one. The male is Luke. Not the one you experience the journey with. But the original Luke Fon Fabre before the replica. He has both memory of Asch and Luke.

For years many debate whether the male seen in the last scene was Luke or Asche where the side event implied that it was Asche with Luke's memory. They even reintroduced Jade's sad face when he saw the returning male, which was memorable.

I think it is definately Luke, whether in Asch's body or not (I like to think it is Luke in his own body as well, as it seems kind of weird for him to get with Tear in Asch's body, hey he was away 2 years, he grew up a bit, maybe changed his style a bit? I dont really have anything to backup the "whose body is it " point). Anyway: 1. why would Asch go to Tataroo valley? Unlike Luke as far as we know it holds no significance to Asch. The only one of the group Asch might want to see is Natalya. 2. When Tear asks why are you here, and Luke says something about Hod and then "I promised didnt I" yes, this could be directed at Natalya about their childhood promise I guess, but the fact Tear cries after he says this then walks towards him, plus the fact that only Luke promised Tear he would "come home" (and the fact that only Luke could possibly have cause to call Tataroo Valley home as it is where he begun his journey and first met Tear) really points to Luke for me. 3. Supposedly the end was originally going to have Tear hugging Luke, but it was changed at the last minute to leave it more open. But this combined with the fact the whole story follows Luke's arc also points to Luke being the guy. If it is Asch it kinda makes all that character development go to waste? While Asch's character was hardly developed throughout the story imo, just bitch and moan about replica this and other crap. Hey we get what he was unhappy about, but geez... That dude... (Not gonna try and hide it I didnt like Asch's character, I didnt love Luke's tbh but he was tolerable) 4. I guess it would be sad if Natalya is left alone, I dont know about anyone else but wasnt there fairly significant hints of something between her and Guy? Anyway, Done. And whilst it is a good ending, I personally am not a fan of the open ending, as for me, Endings should conclude a story one way or another!

George O the reason i loved luke's character was his growth. Sure the self sacrificing attitude started to get annoying after awhile, but he was someone who showed true will to change.

+shirox11 That would have gotten annoying for me as well if weren't for it being a somewhat non-stereotypical self-sacrificial attitude. When he went to sacrifice himself to rid the world of miasma, he started to go through with but his resolve started to weaken. Most characters would have done it without basically freaking out towards the end of it (at least it seemed like he kinda freaked out in the game)

Actually, the intro song already show us the answer, the last line of the intro "Karma" is "We will become one", so when ash move his hand before the light goes off, i pretty sure two soul combine into one that was proven in the side quest, which now he is both Luke and Ash.

I fouind the most prevailant trait of this game was the development of Luke, his personality changed so dramatically from beginning to end, and yet it didnt seem rushed or forced. The natural change from being an uptight selfish Aristocrat to a man who understands the need of sacrifice for others and the greater good. Its quite phenomenal how well the writing was done in this game.

Obviously to keep the anime short but clear enough since each episode only has 22 minutes of screening(and 3 minutes of OP/ED). But you can see some common artes though, however, they don't call out the name!

First, thanks for posting this! The anime gave a bit more detail in their epilogue, so that was nice. As an aside to the various comments about the contamination effect... based on the related scenes in the game, *normally* what should have happened was that, when the original died, the replica would literally disappear and combine with the original, effectively bringing the original back to life. There was no longer any apparent consciousness left of the replica. This is why Jade told Luke...

The question is, his clothing and style changed much and it seems like he went on a journey for 2 whole years, possibly in another dimension of time and space. You don't wear a cape that's ragged and has holes for no reason. Which means he could have been on another adventure unbeknownst to everyone. A 'sequel' could be a canon that takes place right in the ending of present time, and ends at the ending 2 years later. Most games makes prequels or sequels, but a 'pre-ending' would seem interesting.

Asch was dead. So even i it is Asch's body i feel his soul was no longer there and Luke's soul fused with Asch's body edit: the most telling thing to me was how his sword was placed. Asch was right hand handed and sheathed his sword in the classic style.The one who returned had the sword on his back with the pommel facing his left hand. Just like luke always did.

I played this game multiple times when i was a kid, first played it for the game play, then 2nd for the story and the rest for 100% completion. i don't remember any of it now but i still have a vague memory of a mini game in some island you have to fly to get to that made me play it for hours to get all the prices. i really liked that mini game.

神作啊~整個TO系列最喜歡的一代 看著路克從屁到不行的屁孩 但這也沒辦法，劇情設定就是這樣，被複製出來也沒幾年，生長環境又那麼閉鎖...又有一個心懷不軌的老師，想不屁孩都難 後來終於鑄成大錯，並得知自己是複製人，一連串的衝擊下 一點一滴的開始改變自己、探索自己、接受自己，然後逐漸成長 真的很感動也很令人投入的劇情 身為玩家都想幫他打氣呢~ 女主角媞雅超正，又一直默默支持著路克，從沒放棄過他。身為補師但戰鬥上也不會太弱勢，讚 再加上其他人設也很棒又有劇情份量的夥伴，真的完全沒有低存在感的路人夥伴 還有以往「魔法」改為「譜歌」的設定也很新鮮 主題曲又好聽！ 大部分TO玩家覺得經典的TOP、D、E我也覺得很棒，直到玩到TOA，整個超越！ 到現在仍是個人非常希望重製或出續作的遊戲

@@NoName-iz4cu The way Souls work differ from fiction to fiction. His soul could've left the moment he closed his eyes or remained in the body and caused/allowed the merger in the first place. Do you think if the body wasn't Asch, would Luke be able to use that body? i called it a Fusion because he didn't leave his body and use the other. They mixed together and had combined features like a Gogeta fusion. I believe the ending is "Open Ended" and the merger would allow him someway to keep both promises that each Soul had.

yes, i really think luke's soul merged with asch's body that's why he's hair is long again and if it's asch why would he go to tear while asch promised natalia before that he will marry her.........but no it's luke who promised tear he will come home thus he approched tear not natalia ......but somehow i think jade is behind all this look at min 8:48 jade is the only one who is not surprised by luke's return.....but i know jade won't do that to tear. So for me it's still luke the attitude and the soul is him except for the body which is asch's.
