Tales of the Unexpected - Roald Dahl - 'The Umbrella Man' - Sir John Mills -Sir Michael Gambon

An extremely quirky and often overlooked episode that rarely sees the light of day.
It stars two Knighted actors and the fine city of Norwich (again!) doubling up for London.
Sir John Mills plays an elderly con-man selling umbrellas that he's just stolen from local pubs. Things get fruity when he exposes a couple who are cheating....

Isn’t the ending just that the wife’s lover showed his true colours by being so cowardly in his fear that he’d be found out that he insulted her in order to exonerate himself and so she realised he had absolutely no genuine feelings for her. She seems frustrated with her husband already and him causing a scene at the station seems to finalise that he really isn’t a man she either loves or respects so there’s no reason to try to protect either her or her lover’s marriage so she’ll actually now be free - if she lets the umbrella man go free which she does. “No man is worth the tears of a beautiful woman” she remembers implying she is not upset and looking forward to a new life. Well that’s my interpretation anyway 🙂
