Tales of Vesperia - Yuri vs Flynn on Unknown

Okay, I lied. THIS is the most fun battle in the game. I have a separate save file for this battle so I can go back and play it whenever I feel like it :D
I have the Second Star and default costume on Yuri because it's his "canon" equipment, and this battle is awesome. I wanted it to be as "authentic" as possible. Except for Yuri's bodhi blastia. The yellow one is horrible, the new one is just so much better looking.
This is my first real battle on Unknown, so bear with me, alright?

Basically, Guy from Abyss traveled to Terca Lumeris, changed his voice and became an imperial knight, then after the events of Vesperia he traveled to Reiza Maxia, changed his appearence, dropped sword fighting and learned martial arts to then become a doctor. This is how I think of it, since Guy looks the same as Flynn and Jude as the same voice actor xD

So it took you five minutes to finish that boss battle. Pft, I bet I could finish that fight on unknown difficulty at half your level, using only a *Compact Sword + 1* for equipment, all without taking longer than a minute. (The trick is to let Flynn kick your ass).

Fellow gaming Brother/Sister, i thank you for this video. This video helped me decide my set-up for Yuri in my playthroughs. Tiger Blade into Azure Storm, into Shining Fang Drop, into Destruction Field, into Shining Dragon Swarm is my favorite Arte combo. Tons of hits, and lots of stun-locking, super satisfying. One of Yuri's skills, the Tension series, allows you to enter overlimit after you get a certain number of combo hits. The first one is, IIRC, 26 hits.

@supermariojason You gain additional attacks from certain skills. I haven't played this game in a LONG time, but I think the name of the skill was... Combo Plus? There's Combo Plus 1, 2, and 3. Plus 1 adds 1 extra attack, 2 adds 2 attacks, and 3 adds 3 attacks. I don't remember which weapons carry these skills, but I do know that Combo Plus 3 comes with the Blazor Edge Abyssion after it's been "unlocked".

I absolutely HATED that the Vesperia bosses would constantly toss out mystic arts on a whim and without needing to follow the same rules the player has to, the other Tales games do similar things but are usually a lot less cheap and obvious about it.

Flynn is probably the worst not only because he would use his mystic art whenever he wanted but do it while you're comboing him and thus shouldn't be able to fight back at all and especially when you tried to use your own, making it nearly impossible to use a mystic art on him on top of everything else.

+immortalfrieza What are you talking about? The only boss that uses a Mystic Arte without going into OVL is Flynn. And even then, the only time he doesn't it is the first time Yuri uses his in the fight. After that, he always goes into Overlimit first.

The first time you use your mystic arte in this battle, Flynn cancels it out with his own. I did it at the beginning just so I could finish him off with it later. For style points.

@TheGlowAngel It's not a secret event, it will happen as part of the story. IIRC, though, you have a while until you get there. This event occurs almost immediately before you can enter the final dungeon. So don't worry about missing it!

I love this game and those combos do look awesome. I would love to see them both player controlled with the same high health Flynn battling it out with no items :D although I do have 1 question why did you keep lensing him? If you was checking his health can't you just hold RB to show the targeting and see his health like that?

Yeah, it's the New Bodhi Blastia. It's an attachment that, IIRC, takes a bit of effort to get the materials for. I'd recommend checking a guide if you want to get it.

@Dominichunter5 Yeah, it is. It's been so long since I've played this game, so I cannot remember the name... but basically, when you get a certain number of hits, you trigger Overlimit. There are multiple levels to this skill as well. You'll notice at the end during the final Mystic Arte I actually hit Overlimit level 2 because of all the hits Savage Wolf Fury has. Sorry I can't remember the name D:

You can have 8 Artes set. 4 to whatever your arte button is + a direction, and 4 to the right stick + a direction.

ok... so what i did was cook the croquettes which gave the party a unknown status so it could increase your attack or defense etc. have yuri, judith, rita, and estelle for this battle. and equip the best items and skills for each. after that, you always want to take out nan first because of her annoying sphere like blade. after she's done, heal everyone completely w/ estelle and go after tison w/ a 3/4 on 1 attack. hope this helped xD

That's actually exactly why I did that. At the time of recording this, I was playing on an 18" SDTV. It was hard to read the text, much less see those tiny numbers, so I had to Magic Lens it to read the HP.

After beating the game you unlock a bonus shop called the Grade Shop which allows you to buy things with your grade that slightly alter some things about the game, such as increasing the item limit or altering the amount of EXP you get from battle. 999 TP is the max amount of TP you can get, which will come naturally from leveling.

You have to synthesize Overlimit Trio or Overlimit Quattro (or something like that). They only become available after a certain point in the game, though.

So! Back in 2009 when this video was recorded, the capture card I was using at the time, didn't have HD capture. Had to use the composite cables to hook up to the card, and then pass through to the old CRT TV. This resulted in an SD, 4:3 capture that you see recorded here. The problem with 360 games being recorded in 4:3, is that everything ends up really squished and hard to read on a small CRT like the one I had when I was a kid. You couldn't actually read the HP value when viewing via lock-on, because of how squished and small it was. So my only recourse was using a Magic Lens each time I wanted to check the HP (which I was only doing so much so I could guarantee finishing the fight with a Mystic Arte).

You need 1 of every color Star Gem (It's been a while, but I think the colors are red, blue, green, orange, dark, and light) and a Rare Metal. Some of the materials aren't listed when you go to synth it, so be wary of that.

Probably my favourite fight. All the fights in the tales games are the fights with someone close to you. Yuri and Estelle, Lloyd and Kratos, Luke and Asche. All great fights.
