''I see the reuse of assets as a nice thing.'' Puts it on the negatives list. IGN logic everyone...

It's his opinion, but objectively it's a bad thing.
@Richt3010 жыл бұрын
Yeah Colin clearly treats these reviews with his personal thoughts but gives and object score. Fundamentally his reviews are better then most even if it seems counterintuitive. :/ Most other IGN reviews aren't as thought out.
@ShyBoy6ty910 жыл бұрын
AlujaBING How the hell is it "objectively" a bad thing? How can anything be "objectively bad?" You can't look at something objectively, and say that it's good or bad. You can only say that it's there.
@Richt3010 жыл бұрын
"Objectively" from a perspective the reuse of old assets can viewed as lazy or unprofessional. As such it is fundamentally a bad thing. However, personally some people like seeing the old assets and location because it may evoke some nostalgia or memories of the previous entry. Even though Colin liked the reuse, review wise it's lazy. Being objective is just being fair rather then allowing personal feelings get in the way.
@ShyBoy6ty910 жыл бұрын
infinityofgenesis Ok, you seem to know the definition, but I don't think you understand it. You see it as lazy or unprofessional - that's a personal feeling. If you truly viewed it objectively, it wouldn't be seen as either "lazy," or "nostalgic," or whatever opinion you might have of it. It would've ended at "the reuse of old assets." There wouldn't be a "can [be] viewed as..." Get what I mean?

I love the Tales games so i cant wait to buy this. JRPGs is my favorite kind of games and i hate that except for Final Fantasy and a few exceptions like Ni No Kuni maybe JRPGs does not seem to get that much attention anymore. I really love these kind of games so i think they deserve way more attention. Nothing makes you feel like you have experienced an epic and beautiful adventure with a memorable story and characters like a JRPG. I also really love the exploration and combat in these games.

About 8 months, I did a review of the original Tales of Xillia and gave my opinion about the good and bad and possessed. Now, after a few months, I got my copy of Xillia 2 and its probably one of the best Tales of game I've ever played. It is way better than Graces F, Xillia, and Symphonia Chronicles. I cannot stop playing it and I think I will never EVER go back to the original. The Good: +Fast paced and improved battle system +Excellent voice acting (SO MUCH BETTER than the original) +Interesting yet dark storyline (even for a Tales game) +Good amount of content and worth replaying +Tons of customization +9 playable characters, each with their own unique fighting style The Bad: -Tons of reused assets (Repeated environments, character and enemy models, palette swaps, etc.) -The debt system could have been implanted better Story: 8.8 Gameplay: 9.3 Characters: 9 Graphics: 7.2 Sound: 8 Replay Value: 9

If you ever get the chance try out Abyss....It's pretty much the extended and perfected format of Symphonia (unless you prefer buying a 360 just for Vesperia) but I do agree with you. Tales of Xillia 2 is one of the best Tales of games....Which is kinda funny since I find The original one of the weakest (the difficulty just wasn't existent.)

Good plan. That's what I've been recommending people to do. It shouldn't really cost the price of a full new game anyway.
@KiroMaticzPersona10 жыл бұрын
LilChikyChan Why not? It's a new game in it's own right. New story, new 40 hours, improved battle system, new boss battles, TONS of side content, and it even brings 3 new characters to the battle field while still having the original 6
@LilChikyChan10 жыл бұрын
KiroMaticz Persona I felt like I'd just started playing Xillia again. All the extra stuff in Xillia2 gets washed away by the constant reuse of things from the first game. It's why I don't recommend people playing it straight after completing Xillia. In fact you'd probably enjoy Xillia2 more if you hadn't played the first game.
@KiroMaticzPersona10 жыл бұрын
LilChikyChan How? If you do not play the first one then you know nothing about the original characters, you get no back story for them, and so then you just miss out on getting to know more the half of the main cast. The whole point of a sequel to a game is to rap up loose end and especially with jrpgs they are going to need to use the same world it's only logical. It's only been a year they can't have 20 new town/cities for you to visit.
@LilChikyChan10 жыл бұрын
KiroMaticz Persona There's a video section at the main menu of Xillia2 full of cutscenes and commentated clips from Xillia explaining the plot and characters. Xillia2 was basically made from the things they couldn't put in the first game due to time restraints. You wouldn't miss out on much not playing the first game in a sense.

Ok, 3 questions, anyone want to answer these? First. How many playable characters are there, i heard there was 9, cause 3 additional characters join the previous 6 in the first game. 2nd Question. Does this game have an open Overworld? Or does it have the same sort of map location selecting that the first title had. Last question, I was curious bout the lenght, i know the first game was a bit shorter then graces, is the 2nd game larger then the first or just bout the same? thats all i have.

Ugh! I don't get IGN! He said he loved the game and sang it praises except that it reused things and it was very similar to the original, virtually indistinguishable. However he countered that with it being a direct continuation and it makes it more endearing. Then he knocks two points off and gives it an 8? Why get rid of two points if you just countered the argument?! I realise this isn't a perfect example but there have been countless other times IGN have done this. It's like no matter what, certain games can never get a 10. Does this game deserve it? Probably not but some did deserve one but just because that certain game wouldn't typically get a 10 they deduct points for no reason at all. Uggghhhh they can be so annoying sometimes.
@Pendoza8410 жыл бұрын
An 8 is good enough.. who cares!
@bananajana10 жыл бұрын
well its not perfect so its not a 10 right? the other point can be for other reasons, re used assets, not exactly "new player" friendly stuff and stuff.
@zoozbuh10 жыл бұрын
Er lol, I was pleasantly surprised that he gave the game as high as an 8... This is a niche JRPG series which most western reviewers would complain about like crazy. Not to mention it's a sequel, and Tales games are already pretty samey (don't improve on the formula, etc), so he could have been a lot harsher.

I don't really like JRPGS because the stories can be convoluted and often too much fantasy and boring but the last two ones I really liked were FF13 and Eternal Sonata. The story in FF13 was alright, but like FF7 and 8, I felt character and level designs were based off real life a bit more than FF9-12 were mostly all imagination and fantasy. But if I play and beat an rpg, it's because of the battle system and I loved FF13 and Eternal Sonata's systems. Plus ES was just a fucking beautiful game. I've been playing music since I was kid so I'm quite familiar with Chopin and classical music and it actually had an interesting story and amazing soundtrack

I'm interested to see the plot extension, and hopefully some of the battle lag has been resolved from Xillia1 especially during linked battles. I was originally thinking that Xillia2 was Bandai's experiment on shifting to the new PS4 hardware since the assets are right there, but then there's still Zestiria coming up which I believe is still PS3/PS4 as opposed to PS4 exclusive, so I guess Bandai felt like Xillia's story had much more potential than where it ended. I enjoyed Xillia's artes and story, so I'm looking forward to this. Also...does everyone pronounce it as Exillia? I just say Zillia.

@Smugleafthesnivy10 жыл бұрын
PLEASE READ ALL BEFORE REPLYING. I would give tales of xillia 2 a 4/10 below average because: 1) the debt system was a bad idea 2) I cant set my main character (in towns and it will always reset to luger) because I want to play as muset on the field and in town but I cant I must always play as luger 3) my last and most annoying problem is the allimam orbs. the lithiam orb were fine and versatile allowing players to shape there own play style and combat strategy's now you cant "YOU MUST FOLLOW A SEQUENCE TO UN-LOCK MORE THINGS IN 1 TREE AND NOTHING ELSE" now if you were to look at a better tales of games like graces f and xillia 1. the title system worked and got improved with the lithiam orbs and now it took 1 step sideways and 3 steps back. and what's with the silent protagonist. I know its for us to protect are self on to the hero but I don't find myself engaging as a character I am quite the bell end. also tales of graces f got me into the tales of series so to me it is the better due to personal preference. now I am going to say this is MY opinion so don't get up in arms over it and I do respect other people's opinions. Sorry for any spelling mistakes I do suffer from a learning disability so I cant spell right.

I can recommend Xillia 1, if you´re new to this, it isn´t too complex, more linear than the old games and the difficulty is lower, too. It has a strong focus on the story, so you can pretty well check out if the Tales-series is for you with Xillia 1. Of course, you should wait with Xillia 2 until you at least tested yout the first game to see if this is right for you.

I still don't like the fact that they reduced Alvin's strength. Ludger being permanently stuck in my party feels like they want to force me to like him... I don't. I was a fuming with rage when after I beat the game, and go into new game+. to see an option to make Ludger actually talk during selections. THE ONE THING I WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT. The plot is good, but it does take awhile to lift off. Meanwhile you can't continue the story until you pay a certain amount of money towards your debt. This also handicaps your exploration via invisible walls. Even tho the have a quest system that you can find in most MMO's. Making money just so you can progress feels worst than having to grind to pass a powerful foe. Characters will no longer get affinity from linking together. Only Ludger can use the power of "friendship". Which makes the ends of battles lackluster. Seeing teepo nom Jude's head in the first game still makes me chuckle. For those of you who read this far I didn't hate the game. In fact I quite enjoyed myself, but I'm still disappointed at some of their choices for the game. If you can look away from the faults of this game. It's still a great action RPG.

its a bigger grind fest then Xillia... there has been numerous times i have had to backtrack and grind high lvl dungeons for an hour or 2 just to maybe level up once so i can try a boss battle and maybe defeat him if not its back to the dungeons... if u like having to do that shit over n over then go for it... but it gets very repetative, and by the time you level up enough to take on a boss u r stuck on u most likely forgot why u even began the grind session in the first place... because of the constant grinding, i have no clue why i have to kill ludgers brother other than he holds some key or some shit... maybe? i dont remember. i have clocked 90hrs into this rubbish game and about 85 of those hours are grinding.

Yukari Takeba I just finished the game a couple days ago and honestly thought it was really a great game. Yes at first it wasn't that great given that the areas were all the same but then once I got back into it I quite enjoyed it given that Tales of Xillia got me back into JRPG's. I think I clocked in just over 40 hours on the game and didn't spend a ton of time grinding like others say they have plus I completed all the character side stories so it really depends on your play style. Enjoy the game though as it's a great continuation to the first one and my biggest complaint is Ludger's lack of speaking which eventually makes sense from a plot standpoint later in the game

The only complaint I have with this review is the "you have to play the first one" thing. You don't. It's set up with a Xillia Terms book for those who skipped the first. Even the game's own creators said "you don't have to play ToX to play ToX2."

I'm sure if you really enjoyed the first game (like me), you'll probably be completely fine with the rehashed assets, I was already expecting them actually with this game coming only 1 year after the first one.

You just spent the entirety of the review legitimately defending its reused assets but they count as a negative towards the final score? I don't get it.
@LeonomusPrime10 жыл бұрын
He himself feels like reusing assets is fine within the proper context, but he also realizes that most people will see that as a bad thing, and understands it can be a bad thing if used improperly.

I said he liked it himself, but he also said that it was a legit negative to some players and admitted that.

The scenario wasn't thought through, a few trilion humans dead(for lack of a better word) for no apparent reason is... monstorous to say the least.

I think you dont have to play Tales of Xillia 1 before this one. I played Tales of Xillia 2 before the first and understood nearly everything. Thats because the story is a completly new one and onyl has a few connections with the one from Tales of Xillia. the relations between the charakters are also very well explained, thats why i could understand the meanings

Is this game worth buying? i did not like the first one, it was too linear for me like follow the yellow brick road, i prefer something like tales of vesperia

The game's biggest problem is its mission based story progression. Job boards work in handheld games like Tales of the World, but they are pretty inappropriate for a game in the mainline Tales of ... series. The game honestly feels like it belongs on the PlayStation Vita, played in 30 minute intervals, not the PS3.
@LeonomusPrime10 жыл бұрын
But... the entire game isn't based on the job board... The job board is 90 percent optional.... not counting the few missions in game where it forces you to pay some money on debts... The rest of it is chapter based.
@MrGencyExit6410 жыл бұрын
LeonomusPrime You are forced into hunting in certain areas to earn enough money to unlock the rest of the story and other areas. The fact that you are presented a choice of place to unlock gives the illusion of non-linear gameplay, but you still have to do things in a very rigid sequence that is anything but fun.

Which Tales game should i start with because i havnt played any of them before
@mathewwglynn10 жыл бұрын
If you have a ps3, id reccomend graces f or the first tales of xillia. Xillia does come off as a bit rushed and there isnt much post game content, but the story is p good, the combats fun and there is some (linear) exploration. If you have a 3ds Abyss is my personal favorite. the combat is fun, the story is awesome, theres tons of exploration and extra content and you can take it on the go (:. If you have a 360 vesperia is imo very similar combat and structure wise to abyss, except its for a console. It has my personal favorite characters out of the series and the story is really nice as well.

There is a lot you couldn't go wrong with. On PS3 you could also get Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. It is a HD remaster of the Gamecube game. It is a great place to start. Tales of the Abyss is probably my favorite like Mathew Glynn says.

Tales of Xillia series is way better, because it is the only Tales game that I have near enough completed them. Tales of Symphonia chronicles is the next game I like.

Err, I feel like the Tales series have been going downhill lately. The first xillia was decent but not great. The only last "real" tales game was probably Tales of Vesperia, which was decent too but IMO much better than most of the tales game that came after. C'mon namco

Reusing assets is not fine in its own right if the original assets are rather pathetic, Xillias between town areas and general environment is ass backwards and should get ridiculed for touting a new behind the shoulder camera then chucking you into a walled off copy and paste area so often.

As long as we didn't take the symphonia 2 path. I'm cool with this.
@LeonomusPrime10 жыл бұрын
The closest this game comes to Symphonia 2 is the fact that you ALWAYS have to have Ludgar, the new main character in the party. You can't remove him from whatI've seen. Besides that, everything works just as it should. None of that silly level locking business. In fact, you can get up to level 200 in this one.

I swear they're so biased when it comes to JRPG's. If this was some random CoD, you know it would've gotten an easy 9. Regardless still happy it got an 8 though, and yes I know those anti-CoD comments are overdone, but they really are fucking true, sadly.

I hear you unlock the voice of the main character after beating the game once. If that's true then that is quite simply the most pointless feature ever to place in a game. I don't see any justification for the silent protagonist thing, it would only serve to make me less immersed into the story etc
@LeonomusPrime10 жыл бұрын
You don't unlock his voice.... persay... you just unlock the ability to hear your choices get voiced out, that's it.

LeonomusPrime I'm holding off buying a PS4 until a few more good games release so I will most likely play this but I can't justify paying full price for it at the moment. I think Zestiria helped contribute to my lack of excitement for this as well...
