The Worthless Naval Base at Gitmo

The American empire has over 1000 overseas military bases with between a dozen and 45,000 personnel. The United States spends more to operate its overseas military bases each year than China spends on its entire military. Several of these bases have become worthless yet remain open because of bureaucratic resistance. The largest unneeded base is also the oldest overseas base, the US Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, known as Gitmo. No combat forces are based there or even combat support forces. There are no ships, no aircraft, no weapons, nor munitions based at Gitmo. The lights could be shut off at expensive Gitmo tomorrow and everyone flown home and the US Navy wouldn’t notice, except that it would free manpower and resources for a dozen more warships.

Closing the detention facilities and closing the base are two completely different things, the base is absolutely a strategic location and it won't be shut down while the Cuban government remains allied with Russia, China, and Iran.

I absolutely disagree with the premise of this video. Gitmo is near some of our major shipping lanes. If we were to give it back to Cubs, within a week they’ll lease the bay/port to Russia and/or China. We can’t have them that close to our shipping lanes.

There are some good documentaries on KZbin about Patton's death. They all suggest his death is suspicious, but no hard proof exists that it was murder.

I've got the book 'Target Patton' here on my bookshelf, it argues that he indeed was killed by the higher ups including figures like Wild Bill Donovan, but I remain skeptical of the evidence presented.

discombobulated story about the base with CO legal trial. I was stationed there for a year in 2004 and can clearly say that the base is in a key central Caribbean Sea location for a number of urgent support functions such as preventing Chinese settlement in a communist nation very close to the USA, Air-Sea rescue, Navy facilities for ship support transferring from the Atlantic to Pacific via deep water to the Panama Canal; Remaining and future use war time prison facilities to also use for emergency temporary resettlements and the list goes on.

I never thought it was worthless; I went in and out of there lots of times on ships for logistics support. If something happens in the region requiring some military response, the base would again become a hub for logistics support. Keeping a base in a communist country is a benefit.

While there are several bases which could be eliminated or further consolidated for savings, this is NOT one of them. From drug interdiction to Caribbean traffic control to prison facilities, GITMO continues to serve a function and establish a portion of the picket line of America's defenses.
