I'm planning on starting to make my own instruments and I think I found a great instrument for my third project. I've made a kind of wind membrane instrument using a plastic tube and a pen cap and I'm currently working on making a banjo from a cookie box and old wood. I think this would make a great instrument so Im gonna do more research

Hello, you have a nice talharpas. I wanna try to do one, and i am interested about size of this talharpa and what material you use! Amazing sound! You are big master! Thanks!
@HavocHarpa27 күн бұрын
This one is ash body with a spruce top. I think 15-16" scale length. I was using a carbon fiber bridge and tailpiece because I had the material sitting around. I used cheap bass guitar tuners and d'addario prelude (long) viola strings for the low C and G, I think I used a 1/4 scale cello A string for the high string in this video.

I wish I did. I just started trying things mixed with watching other people play on youtube/ig/facebook and trying to play what they were playing. I had a musical background but hadn't really picked up an instrument in ~15 years before I made the talharpa. There is a sizable (relatively) Facebook group "Tagelharpa (och andra stråkharpor) Talharpa and other bowed harps" where people post videos of themselves playing fairly regularly.

I'm curious, is it possible to play this instrument while standing and using a shoulder strap like a guitar? Or does the bow occupying one hand and the other hand pressing on the cords leave the instrument moving around to much as a result of friction/pressure fromt he bow? I have looked around for pictures of people playing similar instruments while standing and haven't found any, so I wondered whether it was just a comfort thing, or if it is impossible/much more difficult to do while standing.
@HavocHarpa Жыл бұрын
I have not tried it personally but have seen others do it often enough. Camilla Ferrari of Atergolupi does in their videos. As does Bianca Stucker when she plays hers. I play a bit more "aggressively" so not sure how it would work out 🤷♂️

@HavocHarpa11 ай бұрын
But a lot of what you can use will depend on your instrument and tuning. If it has a bass bar and sound post steel strings are probably ok, otherwise might be too much tension. Scale length will make a difference too but viola strings are available to fit different sized violas, this has a 16" scale length so I usually use medium or long scale viola strings.
