In this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh sit down with the man, the myth, the freestyle legend -- MC Supernatural. Over the next hour and twenty minutes, we get a deeply candid (and rare) discussion with one of the greatest off-the-dome rappers of all time. The conversation covers a wide range of topics, including Nat's (born Reco Price) early life growing up in Marion, Indiana and his move to Brooklyn, were he met Talib while freestyling in Washington Square Park. Together, the two friends look back on the pre-fame days -- soaking up culture and smoking trees in '90s-era Brooklyn, New York.
Later in the show, Nat lays down the true-to-life stories behind his infamous freestyle sessions with Craig G and Juice -- two rap battles that changed hip-hop forever. He also sheds light on his spiritual side and deep immersion in the religion of Yoruba, before opening up about his mother's emotional reaction to seeing him featured in the "Pass the Mic" episode of Netflix's Hip-Hop Evolution.
As the convo continues, Nat offers details on a new album in the works, gives his take on the difference between "freestyle" vs. "off the top of the head" flows, and offers some truly inspiring words to those involved in today's conscious rap movement.

8:14 -- Nat details the people and moments that inspired his migration from Marion to Brooklyn, NY.
12:53 -- Nat speaks on early days as a young kid honing his craft of freestyling, by rapping over the instrumental side of his dad's 12" singles.
17:05 -- Nat gives us the backstory to where his rap name originated from, and Talib brings up Washington Square Park, where the two met in the early '90s and the historic freestyle sessions that happened there, along with the "Dreads Connect" phenomenon.
22:38 -- Talib and Nat reminisce on all the best weed spots in 90's Brooklyn, the significance of the Nkiru bookstore, as well as the deep multi-cultural aspect of BK during that era.
31:46 -- Nat explains everything that led up to the recording of his debut single "Buddah Blessed It," and the first public rap battle session he participated in where everyone realized the art of freestyling had just gone next level.
40:27 -- Nat tells the full story of his historic 1995 freestyle rap battle with Craig G at the New Music Seminar -- a night that changed the trajectory of both rappers' careers. He outlines every detail, from how The Lyricist Lounge Show hosts orchestrated the battle to Diddy (Puff Daddy at the time) being on stage and keying in on the crowd energy.
53:39 -- Nat compares and contrasts freestyle vs. written rap in the broad realm of hip-hop. He also calls out those that have imitated his styling techniques in an exploitative manner and schools them on the correct approach they should be taking to move the culture forward.
59:27 -- Nat outlines his famous rap battle with Juice and how it helped him gain respect and redemption after the infamous Craig G battle. He also unpacks the impact of these sorts of freestyle showdowns and explains how this one affected both his and Juice's careers.
1:10:10 -- Nat opens up about his spiritual mentor, and godfather John Mason and the elements surrounding the Yoruba religion and spirits of Orisha.
1:13:36 -- Nat speaks on his prominent feature in Netflix's Hip-Hop Evolution, his upcoming album, tells us the differences of "freestyle" vs. "off the top of the head," and gives some food for thought on the future of the conscious rap movement.

That’s not what Harry Mack said in that video, all go watch for yourself. Harry Mack is nothing but humble, go watch his videos, it’s evident. This is a a true example of Ego before intellect. And don’t get me wrong, I’ve been a fan of Supernat since the early 90s, this is just really disappointing.

Guy turned into a mad rapper real quick. I sense nothing but frustration in his speech, and hate towards my man Harry Mack, and not only. "I did this and that" "I stardet it" "I don't need a honorable mention", man please! He likes to get his ass kissed. He started it, thank God he did, but that's all. Why does he need another kind of homage besides a big thanks? Harry Mack would never act like this, and never did, although he's the greatest freestyler. Why does Supernat acts like these guys ows him a cut? "With all respect for Supernatural, he sounds like an old crackhead here. He clearly didn't listen to what HMack said and twisted it for the pointless discussion in the video. Instead of positioning himself as being one of the freestyle greats, empowering the young artists and his own legacy, he chose to shit on everyone else while grasping to the non-existing strain of relevancy. Harry would never do something like that, and that's partially why he is the greatest freestyle artist (not just rapper) in the world."

It's quite sad when a man of great talent passes his prime and instead of taking satisfaction in having advanced the art, turns to attacking those that he inspired. SNat wants to own the idea of taking random words to perform an improvisational piece, but he didn't invent that, it has a long history in comedy and theatre. Was he the first to do it in rap? Who knows? Who cares? All artists are inspired by those that came before them. Now there is a new generation of freestylers and all SNat has is sour grapes. If he thinks he is better than the current group all he has to do is make a video to prove it. Instead he lies about things that we can all verify easily. When you no longer have talent and you're living on your legacy, the best way to wreck it is to become bitter and lash out at people who loved you. Superpathetic.

H Mack’s exact - when he's walking past the Biggie mural - words in the NYC Freestyle Video by Complex that SuperNat refers to: “What can I say about this man that hasn’t already been said, I mean, he’s, you know, he’s the definition of a hip-hop legend. I’ve had people come up to me and tell me that some of the things I say some of the rhythms I use and the way I flow over the beat reminds them of Biggie, and to me, that’s one of the highest compliments you can receive. Biggie had one of the best flows in the entire game. Like, even if you didn’t speak english and you didn’t understand what he was saying, just the rhythm of his voice and the way he lay back over the beat, is just infectious. He was so raw and honest. Like I love the opening cut…” Then it goes on with praise. All respect to MC Supernatural but go watch that video again and then go watch a Harry Mack livestream or any video and see how he does it for the people and I mean all people, all races, sexualities, social groups, the sad, the happy and those in need. He always and I mean ALWAYS puts the community and the people first and he pays homage to everyone that was before him. Even though the whole world knows that he is the best of the top, he always says that Supernatural is miles ahead. The most humble guy in hip-hop that’s for sure and seeing SuperNat say this pissed me off so much I had to write this comment.

I mentioned SuperNat in a Livestream with Mack and he authentically when crazy! My brother you getting things out of a crowd or getting 3 words is not a "routine" It's just a method by which you displayed your brilliance! Harry Mack, has taken it to another level and Mack and put in 20 years perfecting his craft. Now, he is getting creative enough where is making a solid living off of it. That should be respected! It's unfortunate that SuperNat is taking this position. Talib, is in my top 5 MC of all time.. I have him ahead of Biggie and Pac.. If Nat applied the energy and time he does towards hating instead towards getting better at freestyling, he would still maybe be as good as H Mack.... But we all can clearly see how that has worked out as Harry continuously daily puts in the work and practice and throws ZERO HATE OR NEGATIVITY. each day that passes is another that Harry gets better and more recognition, and Supernat gets more forgotten - so good riddens at this point Nat can rot away for all i care

So we can definitely give props to SN for paving the way at a level not seen before him; but it's HM's time and he's next level. Chris Turner doesn't nearly have as much style/flow/skills as an MC. If you watch anything he's done during COVID where he's out on the street doing quick "throwing out words" freestyles, he's out of his element. BUT Chris Turner really shines when he can display his breadth of knowledge - so when he gets super complex suggestions from his live show crowds, he can spin those into impressive raps.

I'm a long long time Supernat fan but he's way off on the Harry Mack stuff. I've seen the NYC video he mentioned, Harry does nothing but pay homage to Biggie. Guy is always paying respect to the people that came before him and talking about his influences. Sorry to say but this comes off as straight clownish and disappointed to see Nat sink to that level.

Supernat your out of your league with Harrymack. And who tells you that your the one that needs to set the bar? I saw your freestyle it's so basic compared to Harrymack beat plays. who steals who? have you seen harrymacks happy hour? It's a continuous freestyle lasting for hours. Unlike your bighead self proclaimed master Harrymack is very humble and giving positive vibes to all his fans. Improve your skills maybe you could catch up to HM. HM is still the GOAT

I had the privledge to see both of these brothers live. I will always remember those shows. I saw SuperNatural in San Diego at a club called The Belly Up with The Roots during The Okay Player Tour. It was way out of control. Then I saw Talib Kweli, again in San Diego at a club called 4th and B. He was there with Erykah Badu that was an incredible night, too. Years later I was able to see Kweli in Portland Or, I think at The Roseland Theater and again it was incredible. I've been blessed to see some incredible shows from Sade to Rakim, Sizzla, Buddy Guy and even Stevie Wonder. I have to say that these brothers are top tier no matter what style of music you want to talk about. This is an incredible interview here and for those of you who don't know how serious Supenatural is, Craig G or Juice, go look up The The wake Up Show with Sway and Tech. Harry Mack Wordplay Wednesday #61, starting at 13:51: kzbin.info/www/bejne/amaun6SrnNCgjaM "Let me drop a freestyle message Hold up, eh Y'all know that I'm nice off the brain But there's many dope freestylers up in this game.... I'm gonna drop a name, never casual Father of freestyle: Supernatural. Y'all gotta peep him if you never heard Cause the way he does his thing off the top is absurd. Supernatural was the biggest influence in my life The way he would get hella fly on the mike Right off the tip, with nothin written The first time I heard him spittin I was 12 years old, I said, "You must be kiddin' Cause this really being off the top, it isn't probable." The level of skill that he had, it seem impossible. Set me on my mission, from the way he would get loose One track, on "Lost Freestyle Files", it featured Juice. It was the classic battle when they went head to head. I said, "Who's this Juice?" Yeah, that's what I said." .... (goes on to give props to Juice, King Los, Gin, Mac Miller...)...and then keeps flowing for three more hours of off-the-top freestyle with terms and topics constantly requested / suggested by fans in his live stream. He does this several times per week, for hours at a time.
