Stephen Brown | “In the Flesh: Chaïm Soutine”
Chaïm Soutine was born Haïm Itche Zalmanovich Sutin in the western Russian empire at Smilovitz (present-day Belarus) to an impoverished Jewish family in 1893. In 1913, he left the city of Vilnius, Lithuania, to paint at the center of the art world of his time-Montparnasse, Paris. Though he died young, Soutine left behind an important body of work. Disorienting views, unexpected compositions, and rich color imbue his canvases with visual power and emotional impact. His painting presents a tour de force of imagery and visceral effect. His works pay homage to the past and had influence on the future, while responding passionately to his own tumultuous times. Join curator Stephen Brown, of the Jewish Museum in New York, and Martha Lucy, deputy director for research, interpretation and education at the Barnes Foundation, for this deeper exploration of how Soutine arrived at such a rich oeuvre.

||About The Barnes Foundation||
The mission of the Barnes is to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture.
Our founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, believed that art had the power to improve minds and transform lives. Our diverse educational programs are based on his teachings and one-of-a-kind collections.
Philadelphia art collector Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951) chartered the Barnes Foundation in 1922 to teach people from all walks of life how to look at art. Over three decades, he collected some of the world’s most important impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern paintings, including works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. He displayed them alongside African masks, native American jewelry, Greek antiquities, and decorative metalwork.
