Marabou is one of the most widely used and versatile fly-tying materials. Fly tyers worldwide use it on various patterns across a spectrum of presentation challenges, including lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, and even salt water. It is truly a material all fly tyers should be familiar with, never be without and well represented on their tying bench.
Join master fly tyer Tim Flagler and me as we all aspects of marabou. We will be discussing and providing on-camera instruction on the following:
-What is marabou? Where does it come from?
-Various marabou types and their uses
-How to use and tie with marabou, including tails, bodies, hackles and much more
-How to prepare marabou depending on how you are using it.
-Best practices for preparation
-We will also be answering as many of your questions as we can

This was my first live event and I really enjoyed it. A great topic for a newbie. I’ve been tying for about a year now and enjoying the community of experts. Thanks Phil and Tim!

Like these Livestreams with Tim on Fly-Tying materials. Where I live getting decent quality material is hard to tie flies as now shop here want to sell pre-tied flies.

Missed Livestream due to Time Zone stuff up, but watching now. Not subject but tied your Argentine Apps Worm, had an afternoon fishing on The Mousetrap Pool and the Guide had to have a sit down for a rest.

That’s great to hear. I now call that version the Shower Spider owing to its gangly look. Fast becoming perhaps my favourite attractor. Cheers, Phil.

Wow, great pattern at 59:50 and on, Phil. Have you noticed the fish like autumn patterns in the fall? I tried something like that with the 'waste' feathers, but ended up losing my dubbing loop, mid phonecall ! Also, great advice on the aftershaft feathers, I always found I was too 'sausage finger' to handle those little marvels. Put them in a dubbing loop, eh? It might not get to you at the same time, but 🎇 Happy Canada Day!! 🎇 🥌 ( YT cut off the flag icons...hmm ) And of course, Flagler had to create a masterpiece just off the cuff. thanks guys, loving it!! Tight Lines!

Hi Mike, Thanks for taking the time to comment on our live event video. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed it and found the content helpful. If you want to add a few to your fly box, the complete tying video for my Waste Troll Leech is on my channel. It is in the Leeches/Streamers playlist. Leech patterns are a great pattern anytime during the season but are one of my "go-to" fall patterns. Thanks for the Canada Day wishes. If you ever have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Cheers, Phil

Thanks for doing this program. I wish I knew it was scheduled and could ask a question during the broadcast. Please tell me the best way to keep marabou from tangling in itself when I spin it in a dubbing loop.

What is the best way to spin marabou in a dubbing loop to minimize the marabou tangling on itself ? When a feather has a thick brittle stem do you soak the feather in warm water and strip the sides with some stem still attached or prefer to cut fibers and put the fibers in a dubbing loop? Thanks for doing the presentation. I hope to see future live-casts.

Great question, Phil, When I dub marabou, I use a Magic Tool to control and prepare the feather. The Magic tool folds all the fibres together so I can remove the stem. Once prepared, I carefully placed the fibres into the dubbing loop. I let the weight of the tool pinch and hold the fibres. With the fibres in the loop, I begin spinning the loop slowly while trying to stop as many fibres as possible from twisting around the loop and becoming trapped. Spinning the loop slowly and having a soft toothbrush on hand helps keep the "fibre twist" minimal. When you are ready to wind the dubbing loop forward, moistening the fibres helps when stroking them rearward so no additional fibres become trapped. I hope this helps. I have been looking for our next Talk and Tie subject, and I was thinking of one on dubbing loops. Your question has convinced me to do so. I will make a point of showing how I dub marabou in this presentation. Cheers, Phil
