#TalkToMe TALK TO ME Review (Spoilers at the end with plenty of heads up!) We may have the horror film of the year in Talk to Me! We definitely have the scariest film of the year so far as of July 2023 in Talk To Me. In this film a group of teens happen onto a mannequin hand that can somehow summon demons. They make a viral game out of letting the demons posses them and guess what? It goes poorly for them. Shocker! Talk to Me is an A24 Australian horror film that is not afraid to get scary and mean! It's just the kind of horror movie 2023 needed to be honest. Not sure, I’m a tough one to scare (unless I flick the channel and there’s a Barbara Streisand film on - she gives Fred Krueger nightmares!!!) I do think that both Scream VI and Evil Dead Rise has their moment though. Much better than Talk to MEH! ;)

I loved the way the ghosts manifested and were “stuck” In their final moment of trauma. It reminded me ALOT of the sixth sense. That made it so much scarier because of the unpredictability of what the ghosts were plotting. Glad it wasn’t chocked full of jump scares.

If you listen to the sounds they make the audio matches their last moment in life confirmed by the directors. One ghost is gurgling water from when they drowned and one is brake sounds from getting hit by a car

The lady that Mia connects with first, the one that takes over her body and tells the boy that they “like him”, did anyone else notice that her face injuries resembled the boys after he was forced to injure himself? The swollen face and one bulging eye? Maybe it’s unconnected but to me it seemed like whatever entity was inside of him wanted to recreate the facial trauma that that woman had.

I’m going to go ahead and say it: Talk to Me is what Evil Dead Rise WANTED to be. The gore & moments of horror actually left an impact & were visceral & felt more real/ raw. Whereas with EDR, in the sea of chaos it was hard for any one scene to be punctuated at the end to fully deliver a blow. Sorry, just the more & more I ponder EDR the more I realize in the future if I want to watch a modern Evil Dead film I will pop in Evil Dead (2013) every time over that. Hell, Talk to Me even beat out EDR in terms of practical effects - which is supposed to be that franchises bread & butter (compare the distracting use of CGI in EDR for the eyes instead of contacts & the shoddy CGI during the deadite monster - zero CG in Talk to Me & brilliantly used, etc).

This movie was perfect. It was not too loud. They used some very original things with sound . When Mia is washing dishes she does not hear her father and neither does the audience until she shuts the water off. It tells you who’s view the audience is with. What happens to her is happening to the viewer. When she died the audience goes with her. The lights go out for all of us.

This movie didn't scare me, but did disturb me and God damnit do I want to go see it again. The acting, story, makeup, and idea were all so good. Spoiler following: The theme of using possession as a drug is so fucking good. All the teen characters were so damn believable it reminded me of people I grew up with. Hitting the head on the table was so visceral to watch and all the lingering shots on the violence and ghosts really makes your jaw drop and so uncomfortable to watch.

It's definitely my favorite horror movie of the year so far, and it's the most mean spirited and brutal but people saying it's the scariest movie might give people the wrong idea IMO. Like i said, I really liked this movie but idk how scary I'd say it is. Anyway, I went into this movie fairly blind cause I went opening night. I had saw the trailer but I hadn't heard too much hype about it and I had a fuckin awesome experience watching this movie. Great theater experience too. A couple parts specifically caused the entire theater to simultaneously squirm, scream and look away from the screen. Brutal shit. I gave it a solid 8.2

It definitely makes my short list of films that disturb/scare me. My best friend & I live 2 hours apart & met at a theater that was in between us. Unfortunately, it was located in a very rural area, so the drive home was long & dark! I kept looking in my rear view mirror, expecting something to be in the backseat! Lol

Being someone who grew up on RACKARACKA content. The biggest shock was to see the mean spirited and serious tone they took with the film. I was expecting more of a Horror Comedy, after viewing years of that on their channel. The second shock comes from the film being executed so professionally. This did not feel cheap or like an amateur film. They surely played their hand and proven their intelligence and ability to produce something on a Hollywood scale. The film managed to to balance the modern nature with teens and internet very well. As films usually fail really hard or have plot holes from this. Another great aspect is the cast really delivers. Not one character sticks out for bad and every decision has some motive behind it. The tension was a slow build, but was well payed off through its eventful scenes. The writing left audiences with just enough to understand it’s themes and vague answers. Leaving enough to ponder and discuss about. Lastly, the sound design is amazing in the eventful moments. In the theater, the surround sound was utilized very well. With gutty dirty sounds filling the room, and voices coming from the corner. One sound through off a lot of people in my showing. Someone even verbally expressed that they thought someone in the theater was talking really loud. Very well executed on all fronts. It isn’t to often when you walk out of a film and can barely find any gripes, misfires, or problems with it. My only 2 cents is the ending felt like it needed an extra 2-3 min to wrap up the loose ends in a way that won’t confuse the everyday viewer. Otherwise people who know movies can understand the visual details that wrap up the story just fine. It made the ending feel slightly rushed, especially when the rest of the film was so well paced with its slow burn. Other than that, it is damn near perfect. Another nitpick is the very small and slightly predictable third act. It ended on a solid note, but to get there was a little predictable and takes notes from other similar films. It surely has jumped up on the best of horror list for a lot of people and has climbed to one of my favorites of the year. As of now this is a 8.5/10 film. SPOILER SECTION: the ending was an extreme parallel of her taking her own life to give herself mercy. Her friend said that Riley showed signs of recovery. That little amount of doubt was enough for her to mercy kill herself and save Riley from her slow descent. We see Riley recover and then leave the hospital. Just as we see her father walking out of the hospital. As a sign that he recovered from his neck wound. Then the stinger of her being the spirit is where the real question is. She isn’t insane or like the other spirits we saw. Maybe implying, that overtime, limbo gets to be to much for the spirits and they begin to fight for a new body. The hand is the way of getting inside the next idiot who chooses to play the game. Mia may eventually become one of those frantic and powerful spirits as she fights to leave limbo. That is how I see the answers to the questions at the end. Her taking her own life took weight of of her friend and her father. She is no longer living and breathing on the necks of her friends family, and her father No gets to be relieved from having to tell his daughter the truth or potential truth.

***SPOILER ALERT*** With the elevator scene, I believe that her father survived. She had passed when jumping in front of the car and that essentially wiped from existence. Her consciousness “woke back up” in the hospital (limbo, due to the seance being performed by people unrelated) multiple months later after Riley fully recovered and her father was going to visit Riley as he knew the importance of that family to Mia. While she was being brought to the seance she was given a glimpse of all those she cared about in her life. This is just my personal interpretation of the final scene and I’d love to discuss further if anyone else is geeking out over this movie as hard as i am

I think the difference between a great horror movie and a bad one is the amount of effort the writers put into the story and the characters. If i dont have a reason to care at all about these people, i won't be gripped by what happens to them. If the plot is boring, hugely predictable, or nonsensical, im not going to even remember it when ive left the theater. That's why this one is so good

(Spoiler below)👇 I believe the ending was a time skip. Firstly the friend called 911 to save the dads life, Riley got better in the hospital that's why he left with mom and sister, and mia died (obviously) coming back to the hospital as dead or demon to be shown that everything is all right before moving as demon and or dead IMO.

It's not ghosts. It's Jinn/demons. And one should never mess with them. It's very rare that they even want to play with humans, but in the event of them doing so, you're finished.

I loved the movie… I agree with many on it not actually scaring me. The scene where the boy was smashing his own head in was freaky to me though. It was the scene that got the most, if not only physical reaction out of me. But I unlike some thought it was so well done where it may be one of my new most favorite horror films. I can see this being a movie that cleverly has you looking at it in different lights the more you rewatch.

Thank you for being honest. I agree, it wasn't scary that some make it out to be. But it was genuinely good horror/drama with very good ending. Sure new favorite of this year.

My thoughts (spoilers): The dad survived and to me, the elevator meant he got to continue his life without her and she was gone. Throughout the movie, she makes selfish decisions which causes her to end up getting tricked by the demons. When the mom's ghost showed up I started to think or realize the main girl was not a reliable narrator. The ending of her being the demon found was pretty cool.

I enjoyed this movie. But the only thing that made me react was the 'dog' scene. I was sitting there going: "Oh, hell no. ...Motherf*cker ... why won't this end????" That scene was too damn long! 🤣🤣

I thought that Riley's sister pushed Mia onto the road. The ending is much darker to think that Jade pushed Mia to her death, effectively leaving Riley stuck in purgatory and Mia in limbo with unfinished business.

SPOILER - SPOILER SPOILER - SPOILER SPOILER - SPOILER SPOILER - SPOILER I believe everyone in the hospital is alive. She’s seeing time elapse and nobody in the living world acknowledges her. When you see Riley again he’s fully healed. That means so much time has gone by. There was zero reason to show a clip of her dad being alive once we thought he was done. They could have left it there or show the friend finding his dead body. Instead he’s barely alive. And in movie world if you don’t see the confirmed death there’s always room for return. I think he simply was leaving the hospital. And there’s plenty of meat on the bone for a sequel within the mom ghost storyline and if that was even really her mom or if the dad was telling the truth.
@myra-yves
@myra-yves Жыл бұрын
i genuinely think her dad was telling the truth about the letter but the spirit version of her mom obviously had malicious intent in her telling mia he was lying and that it’s not really her dad, like mia was essentially going full schizo at the end with the spirits so it would only make sense. honestly her stabbing her dad in the throat after what seemed like a genuine moment between them and her dad seemingly trying to connect with her was pretty tragic and sad to me. this movie is really enjoyable personally

Her dad was telling the truth but the demons had mom lying to her. Same happened in movies opening scene. Remember in the opening scene the young man put the knife through his skull to stop himself from stabbing his brother a second time. The first blow he gave his older brother looked to be survivable.

I felt bad for mia as well, but also.... it was her choices that got riley into this mess She should have say no or pull the hand away when the 50 second mark She used her friend family as a escape and she did used their kindness, as we should from their voice that she have hurt them before She become so addiction to the hand that she pull the people she love into her mess That why jerks in this movie walk away, yes they bought the hand to the party, but mia was the one who push to continue it on to those who doesnt deserve it

Just saw the movie tonight and it was good, but not what it was being hyped up to be. Like they kind of under used some of their most interesting concepts, like why was there only one "weird moment" with the "Toe Ghost" in Mia's room? I thought that once they introduced that concept of "Micro Possessions" that they would use it again, and reality was going to become harder to identify from that moment on. ... but they never really did it again and it seemed like a waste of a concept, and the whole "They can mimic living people" was kind of pointless, as why not just have Mia struggling with what she perceives as a vengeful ghost and then have her then accidentally hurt someone. Like how is a ghost taking the shape of a living person? ... it makes sense that they could change shape through a never ending pool of the dead, but taking the shape of a living person just seemed a bit too obvious and kind of broke the film. As why not just have Mia see Riley as a violent demon the entire time and make her believe that the demon in Riley's bed was going to attack Jade and the mother? It was good, but the "Twist" was obvious from the second interaction and the final "Twist" was something that I thought was going to happen earlier but from Riley's perspective. I think the "This is this years Hereditary!" over hype kind of hurt this film for me, as I was expecting that edge of your seat tension like Hereditary, but instead it was more like a series of creepy moments with kind of dull teenager family drama sprinkled in-between that kind of deflated the tension that they were trying to build. Like did the ghosts just stop haunting her at some point? As they seem to leave her alone for a large portion of the second act, after that one incident in her room, they don't really come near her again until the Dad reads her a letter. I thought the Dad was going to reveal that the Mother was claiming to be seeing spirits and that's why she was taking sleeping pills, or some sort of connection, as why did they make a point to mention her fingers and scratch marks on the door, if it wasn't going to be brought up again? They just left little things hanging that were never addressed again. Or how everyone in the movie would sit back and let people damage themselves quite severely and not even attempt to stop or restrain them, like if i seen my brother bang his head of tiles I would immediately rush to stop him or move him away from the tiles, I wouldn't sit there screaming for other people to help me. Or why didn't they rewatch the recordings of them talking to the hand? ... like that first possession of Mia was when it was pointed out that some malevolent spirit was already taking an interest in Riley. Why didn't they rewatch the footage and notice that, and why not just show the footage to the mother and explain the situation by showing her the footage of all of them getting possessed and show her the hand that Mia had in her possession at the time? Like why was their an air of secrecy around the hand? They were filming it and putting it all over social media, so why not just show the mother? It's not illegal to communicate with the spirit world!

im not a big horror fan, ive watched a few horror movies but not a lot. only reason i watched this was: a: i saw an ad and it looked cool b: a24. and jeez i LOVED it. even tho i dont watch a lot of horror i do know about a lot of the tropes (namely the last girl trope) and this one just didnt seem to have that many. honestly i was very pleased with it and glad i made the impulse decision to go watch it. i absolutely loved every second of it. will defs watch again

It's actually an Aussie horror movie. A24 only bought the rights to this movie. So i wasn't surprised when I found it, it's an Australian horror movie bc they really make some very lowkey unique horror movies in the past few decades. Another very popular one came out of it, was The Babadook.

I thought this movie did a great job at making Mia flawed but still a character that the audience could empathize with. I’m a big fan of a horror film where the protagonist’s situation gets progressively worse and worse, especially when its caused by their own actions. I found the end to be very satisfying.

Yea, watching this movie made me feel dirty but in all the right kind of ways. I hope if ever they endeavor to make a sequel they give me some closure (spoilers!) as to what happened to the little brother. Not knowing didn't at all ruin the movie for me but nonetheless left me with a "I wonder what happened to this kid after the credits rolled". Regardless, this is a must see for all you horror fans out there who don't mind getting some eww splashed on your face... but in a good way.
