Talking about Ganking - Elite: Dangerous

I have killed people for Power Play, contract hits, opposing CGs, opposing BGS, and even for bumping into me while docking/undocking. I have blown up CMDRs who approach Gramma Farseer (she must be defended from Stranger Danger), and for muscling in on my crystal forest or Jameson Crash Site farming. I've even killed people who have attacked me first. In every single one of these scenarios, no matter how much they count as "legit pvp" or "gank" in your personal opinion, I have been accused of "ganking" in that scenario. So, to me, it doesn't even matter. When everything is called a gank, then it doesn't matter if it is or not.

The only ship I have that I truly feel vulnerable to a gank in is my unshielded Type 9, named "Don't gank me Bro!!!". I use it to run mining wing missions for commodities I can buy. No shield for more cargo. Others might tell me I should run a shield, but for time spent in the ship I can get more missions done without a shield and make more credits, even if the occasional gank is part of the cost of doing business. If it wasn't for player interactions I wouldn't be playing. Most of those interactions are with gankers/PVPers.

At the end of the day, people are free to do what they want. It’s hard to get ganked in elite. Especially with the ability to high wake. Gankers also provide emergent gameplay for other groups to counter the gankers. And with a game like elite where everything is player driven that’s huge. I also like gankers because most of them are just shitters and provide easy ego boosts after a day of sweaty rebuys with actual good pilots😂

Nothing to complain with ganking in an open world game. Especially with elite where, a weak ship can, with a little bit of method, easily evade. This is the basics of elite in open. This is the very first thing everybody has to learn: "How to survive a gank" It's not a matter of full g5 ship. It's only a matter of being just enough tanky or evasiv the 10 secondes we need to set the next jump. Even faster than a fucking clog.

When you can build a 64ly Krait Phantom with 1000Mj of shields or a 62ly Anaconda with 2400mj of shields, there's really nothing that's going to be a major threat unless you allow it to be. And that practically God modes you in exploration so that you can survive not only ganks but a crash into the side of a planet should you forget to check for high Gs.

The definition of a gank is absolutely misinterpreted by many elite players. The nuts and bolts of it is that even an un-engineered ship can escape most of the time. Hell, you can even get anti gank instruction, and to qualify as an instructor you have to escape an attack in an un-engineered ship by a full wing of engineered ships.

I feel it's truly part of the game. If you don't like it- you should be playing in solo or in your own server. Yet, those typically whom are salty are also the ones who stay CBLing. When I was flying as mostly hamless in combat, I was taken under the wing of some other players whom explained it to me as such. To each their own though, I feel. I carry mines on most of my builds i always leave the big stations at full speed and dropping mines, specialy if players or npc are going trough the mail slot. Is a shit thing to do but you know shit happen

I get the concept of playing in open as the "dangerous" mode, I always play in open; I just can't understand how is that even funny, killing someone who can't fight back is braindead in any game. whatever, you'll never see me doing that. luckily there's no kids playing this game, but sometimes that makes no difference.

I'm agree and not agree at the same time, sure you play on open, you do what you want. But there are more things to consider when playing in Open, or ED in general. Basically ED is a game with a lore, a dynamic story by the time with some factions, some changes in the galaxy, a lot by players actions. And NOT a pure PvP game like CS.Go, Hell Let Loose or most of FPS games. Some people play in Open when alone (Like me) because they want a dynamic environment, when they can meet some CMDR, and fight some other in a powerplay way or just to observe some actions around, like the game is basically made for and not to be obliterated by some bloodthirsty frustrated people for no reasons. I have nothing against a Federal CMDR who free-kill an Imperial CMDR, or for CGs reasons, that's how the game is, but not otherwise in my opinion. I think people who claim these actions for a "PvP way" are just making an excuse to execute harmless peps with pleasure. When a player cannot defend himself, that's not PvP, that's an execution without judgement, and not funny for someone who maybe doesn't have the time to reamass money to rebuy or to restart some missions/material farm to have ships with billions of Mj shield because they have a family life or an hard job, they just want to play ED in their way like some other play it in their own. I completly understand why a lot of CMDR just leave the game tired of this. Then the excuse like "Go Solo" or "Change game then" cannot works, that's NOT your game like that's not our either, I'll never tell some CMDR to go into Arena for PvP for example, but I can understand why people are playing like that. So I hope these players can accept the point of view of others. It's just how people are unfortunatly, even in a video game.

I played as a pacifist trader for a long time in this game. I played only on open and spent my time evading gankers in my T7. If you choose open I think you have to accept the murder hobo's and crazy types. While in my T7 if I got killed I sent a GG and asked for advise, over time I got better at escaping and my ship got tough. By not being salty and taking my rebuys like a boss soon the gankers left me alone as they got no salt. As long as people are not being hounded or hunted I am fine with want gankers do, oddly it was more the lawfuls who hounded people off the game in my experience.

The clip you showed of the attack on the Novice Type 7 at 3:56 was textbook ganking. Running without shields in open isn't brilliant, but novice sort of says it all. I think you might underestimate the number of people who engage in this kind of combat regularly. Examples would be waiting near engineers to attack players just starting out their engineering. The attack on the Belugas at 7:45 @ 13:11 might be Power Play but it's still pretty sad. To call that combat would be dishonest. The mostly harmless DBX at 8:45 would also qualify as a classic pointless gank. The term we probably should be using is griefing. If FDEV really wanted to stop this stuff they would charge the aggressor for the rebuy

However is that not the choice of the player to run no shields on a T7 in open? I am not sure how Panda is doing anything underhand or giving the person no chance of escape in any of these clips. I spent 3 years as at t7 trucker I know how common these attacks are.

@@oddball1975 I'm just going by the definition you used at the beginning of the video. The player is clearly very new and doesn't know any better, and is in a ship that even fully engineered wouldn't be able to do anything but flee. So to your own point after 3 years you know how common those attacks are but a novice wouldn't and probably doesn't even understand what engineering is. (there is not way to learn this stuff in game) The only point of doing that is to ruin some new bright-eyed player's day and mine some salt. (anyone with weapons could have killed that ship). If combat focused players were smarter they would let these players mature so that they staying in open for longer and don't give up on open play. Edit: the maximum engineered shielding on a Type-7 is about 430 MJ which might have given him enough time to boost to his maximum fully laden speed of 210 m/s. Slim but possible jump chance I suppose.

Griefing would be constantly killing the same Cmdr again and again and again surely? So many Cmdrs try to make a mountain out of a mole hill, better to just say "I was attacked in such and such a system by Cmdr so and so". But no it's straight to the sensational lol, my advice is take it on the chin, learn the game, build a ship and get back at the guy o7 🍻🏴‍☠️

So a new player with a slightly upgraded ahip is expected to survive against a fully upgraded fully enhineered ship? No there arent player levels, but there are power levels. A low power ship cant defend agaisnt a purpose built player killer. Am i seeing thos wronh? Please enlighten me How does a new player fight back or escape. Small shops get mass locked, and this cant escape You say engineering is the key? How can a player engineer when the engineer is blocked off? How would players know to avoid systems? Is it fair for a player who wants to look for people to play with to get shot down for playing the game

I have many time survived attack in a un-engineered ship. My preferred method is build the ship with module reinforcement and hull reinforcement. When interdicted just submit you only aim is survival you are not fighting. On drop boost fa off and turn and face the attacker. Chaff and heat sink immediately. Plot jump to another system, you should filter nav panel to stations and systems to make this easy. Now as you submitted the cool down timer is fast. Start high wake as soon as you can but stay facing the enemy. Keep chaffing and heat sinking and keep 4 pips in systems. All ships should be built with shields in the biggest or 2nd biggest slot. Now when you jump is about to complete turn to face it. You may have no canopy but you drives and fsd are all you need to protect. There is some more than this but like I said full response later. Engineering is open to all now it used to be behind the horizon paywall so that is what I mean. Most new players focus on money and big ships but a engineered cobra is way more survivable than a badly build Cutter. Please not you high wake as no mass lock on jumps to other systems mass lock only affects a low wake.

@@oddball1975 my concern is the new players like myself. 90% of what you explained isn't known by new people. They just know, fight interdiction mini game, try to win, if you lose, stay alive till fsd is up. I've been poking around on the forum about gankers, just to see what people had to say. Majority, at least in my small sample size, have their gancker experience just be a troll, in that it isn't to educate the person, it's solely to kill them. Yes, an experienced player knows tricks to escape and has the ship build to do it, but new players don't. New players don't know that the community views open as permission to kill you. The reason I'm making such a a strong point about new players is that it is those players that keeps the game alive. If your first interaction in open is a murder, and you lose all the work you put in, is might be seen as a community to not stick around in. I get that it's part of the game, but so is being new and inexperienced.

4.25 is correct a ganker simply preys on the weak .✌️ Must be said that was why FDEV put a ring fence around when starting to stop such. The other thing to add is a ganker has absolutely nothing to lose. Personally now keep I keep it classy always saying thank you and how I envy such amazing skill asking if they need anymore materials for firing pramo as I have a few secret pristine planets 😉. Anyway there are way more nicer peeps out there that don’t need / crave such attention.

these days every pvper is called a ganker anyway xD xD,....if you do bounty hunting, youre a ganker,..if you do power play youre a ganker, if youre doing piracy youre a ganker,...that "ganker card" is played out way to easy and way too fast xD,...but like you said, most of them dont even know what ganking really is,.. getting attacked by a wing of 4 fdl´s in a explorer ship,..well, you could consider that ganking,...getting attacked in your fully fittet vette or cutter in a pp system by a scout with flechettes (like i do it) just isnt xD,.. but it doesnt really matter what someone says, you, me, or anybody else,...for those kind of cmdrs we always will be gankers

Yeah large numbers on very weak ships that would be a gank under the terms I have seen. Any one V one person has a chance to escape with the way ED is you should have a very good chance of escape. Time to Kill is not that fast.
