Not mad...in the correct term....but a completely fearless "crazy" soldier. A good leader and not a man that you would want to cross. This man was responsible for saving around 2000 people (a mix of nuns , medical people, civilians etc) from absolutely certain death at the hands of the "Simbas". And death at their hands was a ghastly thing, usually done with a machete or "PANGA" as they were referred to. Remember him as he was in his day...a good man, just somewhat unconventional. Have a good life. And take a risk from time to time....it will make you feel "Alive".

Anthony Mockler in the opening of his book New Mercenaries described an encounter with "Mad Mike" whom he met at the hotel he was staying in. In the beginning he his preconceptions but after talking with him at the bar (where "Mad Mike" - whom he described as a proper British officer - had an orange juice) he was rather taken aback about this mercenary leader who referred to his men as "volunteers" because they "didn't like the term mercenary" and how he was organizing parades and football games for them. All of this which his son describes here was described there.

Think the people knocking mad Mike are ignoring the fact the black African rebels were the ones that raped, murdered, woman, child, boy, girl, nuns, man, priest, some impaled on wooden poles an set on fire, mad Mike's men could smell the burning flesh from 3miles away an the sight of the place an smell burned into there memories for ever,an the strength to keep going an help the innocent people being murdered for going to school an family's trying to survive,if they were bad men they would have taken a diamond mine over for them self an just defended it an collecting of slave labor, blood diamonds,,,,so some should think an have some proof before they mouth off .they killed rebel killers evil ruthless profiteers an those backed by the corrupted an twisted not unarmed people trying to live an survive that was not mad Mike's crews style they were professional

Yes because people go to hell for dispatching rapists and murderers and protecting the lives of innocent women and children. That would be black women and children in the Congo there were no whites they were protecting.
