I've been hearing a lot of stories lately about the benefits of catch cans, and not just on the modern common rail stuff either. So I stopped in at Terrain Tamer in melbourne to get the full insight on the FlashLube Catch Can from my mate Allan Gray - as usual I ended up doing all the spanner work!

Ok, "when the filter gets blocked the relief valve lets the pressure out and you can see a dribble of oil" my understanding of crankcase venting is that if there is any restrictions to the venting it will cause a positive pressure in the engine and blow oil out through the seals. So wouldn't a catch can with no filter be better?

There is a problem with gas engines building a crust of carbon on intake valve stems, and direct injection gas engines even worse, because the fuel is not in the intake port washing deposits off. There was a youtuber, fordtechmaculoco, who reported that Ford replaced a bunch of cylinder heads under warranty, on the EcoBoost V6's, due to this crust causing poor running on these US engines. The cause was that the hose entered the manifold near the center cylinder, instead of further upstream. The fix was a device like this catch can. I read another report that newer GM engines are using piston rings with lower tension on cylinder walls, thus allowing more blowby gases. (The report cited less friction on the rotating assembly was the reason for the thinner rings). The question is, are there Ford turbo engines widely available down under? And I'll bet most modern engines would benefit from a catch can system, gas or diesel. Just found your channel this week.

When you say EGR plate can cause damage, what about VDJ that has been blocked off but remapped. Does this simply mean the remap stops the error code, but can still cause damage ?
@OFFICIAL_VIDEO_AWARDS
@OFFICIAL_VIDEO_AWARDS 6 жыл бұрын
Scott Abraham no a remapped ecu or flash tuned/ plug and play won't stop the ECU throwing fault codes unless the data is being manipulated specific to the EGR system. It can cause damage if the engine was designed to vent pressure and that pressure is now accumulating inside. More likely than not it will blow gaskets than actually serious internal damage.

Dave Pw there are some systems like the early DiD Hiluxes that use the EGR system also for boost control. Blanking these will kill your very e pensive variable geometry turbo. On those the only safe way to disable EGR is to have it tuned out. Many common rail engines will also throw codes and limp modes with a blank plate unless some electronic method is used to switch of EGR function (tuned out, munji cabke etc) or some plumbing mods to replace the exhaust gas with clean air from between the turbo and inter cooler so the EGR valve sees the flow and pressure changes it expects, then the exhaust manifold can be blocked

Warranty has to prove a catch can caused an oem part failure and if the install is done right you won’t have an issue. I have a Provent 200 on my DMax, best thing you can do. It does NOT void warranty, warranty is there for failure of components and manufacturers know it.

Be careful. A manafacturer can turn around and say, "mate, you modified the engine, the impetus is on you to hire an engineer to author a report to prove it wasn't a contributing factor to the issue". This costs money, and takes time and effort. You'll pay for it in stress as well. Engines don't need catch cans. There is an oil separator as standard with all vehicles which collects oil as it comes out of the crank case.

@dave216dx

Aldo Infante You can't!
@pugnut403
@pugnut403 4 жыл бұрын
You can’t. Only issue I have with this video. That said, most common rail motors will throw fault codes and go into limp mode if you block EGR, and the DiD Hiluxes use the EGR system as part of their boost control system and can kill turbos with a blank plate. On these you need a custom tune to code EGR off. Some vehicles you can fool the system with a resistor on a temp sensor, or plug and play systems like Munji cable, and you can also block EGR at the exhaust manifold and plumb the EGR valve to feed clean air from the high pressure side of the turbo between turbo and inter cooler, so the valve sees the flow and pressure differentials it is expecting to see, but only clean filtered air goes into the manifold. There is NO benefit to the engine from EGR at all. Removing it increases NoX emissions, but reduces other emissions so there are swings and roundabouts. No, it will not overheat your engine, EGR already switches off at full load when the engine is making the most heat, and if deleting EGR will make your engine overheat at light to medium throttle then there is something major wrong with it...

@Aldo Infante The EGR cools the combustion chamber that reduces oxides of nitrogen. But this cooling eliminates the detonation, knock or ping. So other than mechanical damage, it allows the engine to run with higher spark advanced and acts like high octane fuel or fuel with a higher anti-knock value. No EGR at idle or cold coolant, so install a “Flashlube” oil catch can, keeps the exhaust clean, keep the O2 sensors clean and the cats. Otherwise cats heat up, swell, crack and turn sideways blocking your exhaust. You’ll be running poorly like a banana in your tailpipe.

1990 Volvo 240 red block engine, has an oil separator box as standard, feeds separated oil back to the sump. Is this a bad situation? No PCV valve, just a flame trap from the rocker cover. Just curious as to why this has become an issue the manufacturer's/auto engineers have not considered. Remember these devices are intended to reduce the pollution that we all breath in!!
@pugnut403
@pugnut403 4 жыл бұрын
The Redblock still has a PCV system, that pressure needs to co somewhere. The oil separator does a good job of reducing the oil that gets into the manifold, and the flame trap stops a backfire setting the sump alight and turning it into a bomb (when it’s not gummed up with oil, pressurising the sump, and popping the rear main or front cam seals...) but that air once separated from the oil, does go into the manifold. The separator box and flame trap replace the conventional PCV valve seen on most engines. High power turbo redblocks often have large catch cans because that oil separator can’t handle the extra blow by. I messed with Redblock Volvos for many years, and have cleaned out more flame traps than I would like to think about...

Both of my old 12HT's didn't have this deposit caked up in the intake but my 1HDFTE cetainly did. If it isn't being caused by EGR then why is it happening? Is it because the oil that is in the intake is being heated by the egr gas and then being left as a deposit?

At the expense of clogging the intercooler and the rest of the fresh air manifold, we haven't even talked about what it can do to the very highly machined turbos that spin at incredible speeds. What do you think that can do to the balance of these instruments and consequently the longevity of these crucial parts? Very expensive parts? That requires many man-hours to replace.

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY I think I can help clarify here: EGR = Exhaust Gas Re-circulation. It takes a portion of your exhaust gas directly from the manifold pre-turbo at partial throttle, runs it through a cooler and directs it back into the intake. This lowers emissions but can also gunk up the intake. On certain cars the EGR cooler can fail and allow coolant to enter the intake - bad news obviously but nothing to do with a catch can. PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation. This is where the catch can comes in. It takes the fumes that blow by the pistons and into the crankcase then redirects them into the intake to be burnt again, usually taken from the rocker cover. The problem is that these blow by fumes tend to collect oil droplets on the way through the crankcase which then mix with the EGR gasses to form a thick sludge (google blocked diesel manifold and you will see what I mean). The catch can is placed in-between the rocker cover and intake and removes the fine oil droplets from the air. The dirty fumes can then be run back through the intake with minimal contamination. Diesels are dirty motors, no way of getting around that. You can defeat PCV, EGR and DPF systems, but at the end of the day you and your family are the ones breathing in the carcinogenic fumes produced by your own diesel, so apart from legal issues with the EGR and DPF you should probably leave them alone. But a catch-can is 100% legal so long as you return the cleaned fumes back into the intake. Hope that helps

B Mon blocking EGR will not hurt your engine, it will make it last longer. The on,y downsides are an increase in NoX emissions (countered by a drop in other emissions) and the fact that it is illegal. In every other way it is a positive for the engine.

QUESTION though, do you know if have a catch can or provent system would be redundant for a diesel with a deleted EGR or would it help clean the system out further? Don't want to disrespect you too guru's but a blanking plate with a 10mil hole in it works fine. No one is more fussy than me with my motor & it has never run so clean & cool since doing this mod. I am still going to install a catch can too just to be doubly sure but am very happy with the plate. Are you guys making money off the Flash Lube cans? You seem to be pushing em pretty hard. Good vids though.

EGR allows fine diesel exhausts particulate to enter the inlet manifold that would mix with oily vapour that creates crud. So they’re inter-related.

Agghh! John, don't just tell us the advantages, tell us some of the disadvantages too. Sounds like your still a slave to the advertising BS like when you were with 4wd action. 😔 Catch cans are GREAT if you're the mechanical type and are always maintaining the filter element and draining the residual oil... Not so great for the average Joe that isn't savvy. Disadvantages... Catch cans will definitely effect manufacture warranty on any new vehicle! Just like any after market products you install on a vehicle. No matter who installs it, If that after market accessory is found to have been the cause of an engine problem or failure of any part. No warranty! Fact. Catch cans do cause problems if they're not serviced or installed correctly. One big problem I've seen happen to a few unfortunate people is forgetting to close the drain tap at the bottom of the catch can. This will cause the turbo to suck unfiltered air through the drain hose into the catch can and straight into the air intake of the engine! Usually causing turbo failure and at worst case scenario, engine failure. Fact. Don't ask me how I know. 😔 Quality catch cans do a great job if you're good enough to look after them but you'll still eventually have carbon particals from the EGR valve blocking the intake manifolds... But yeah, it will take a lot longer to gunk up with a quality catch can, as you don't have as much oily vapour mixing with the carbon gasses. Blocking the EGR valve is highly illegal and irresponsible but you'll probably find that a lot of people in the 4wd industry still do it anyway. Fact. 😉 For those people that have blocked their EGR valves, it's really not worth going to the expense and risk of an oil catch can. Oily vapours on their own without EGR gasses won't build up at all.. The only issues with oily vapours is the mess it can make in your intercooler. It's very easy to clean your intercooler out compared to an intake manifold. And if you're the irresponsible type and not worried about your health or legalities of blocking thee EGR valve, then just vent your PCV vapours to atmosphere as well. 😉 Venting to atmosphere can still be done through a catch can and then vented into your chassis rails... Savings the environment and adding a bit of rust protection to your chassis. 👍 Unfortunately this is still deemed illegal. So only for off road purposes people! 😉 Still Luv ya Roothy. 👍

Good points. Also catch cans do not catch 100% of the oil. Some gets by. Bet that screws up your intake, turbo, intercooler, valves anyway.

@getfucked517

Well that's totally incorrect information. The EGR returns unburnt soot back into inlet and can at times be fairly gritty. Blocking the EGR is by far the best for the engine. A simple example is if you exhale your breathe into a Ballon and keep breathing it along with a few clean breaths inbetween we all know what happens. Inhale and exhale normally and there's no problem. I understand you can't admit to illegal fitment of a blanking plate but to tell others it's bad for an engine is crazy. and honestly I'm disappointed to hear what I thought was a great old school mechanic carry on with such garbage.

drilling in a hole in the blanking plate isn't actually a full EGR delete ..drilling in a hole only alows enough to trick sensors this stops any engine check lights my understanding if your going to delete the EGR make sure its a full delete
@hartzland7658
@hartzland7658 6 жыл бұрын
deanoobaby Having a 10mil hole tricks the sensors & even with a hole stops 90% of crude entering, so i will take that over the hassel of a full delete. Just add a catch can to be sure also.
@deanoobaby6463
@deanoobaby6463 6 жыл бұрын
that's what I had said ..nearly all the vehicles I have owned I have fully deleted the EGR some are harder than others ...the 10 mm hole is only a restriction to be honest I have never needed to drill in a hole as I have tricked sensors by other ways ...depending on the quality of the catch can this can also be a curtain percentage of catching oil unless it a high end catch can ...if the engine also runs a turbo ..a turbo can also bypass slights amount of oil (nature of the system ) ..a catch can will not catch this oil from a turbo ....a 10mm hole seems rather large compared to the normal size of 3/16 hole

For environmental reasons you are 100% correct that egr is necessary to reduce nox. In terms of engine longevity you are absolutely full of shit. EGR introduces soot particles (fine pieces of carbon that act as sand) passed through your your motor and coats the entire motor in soot.
@burakh.8670
@burakh.8670 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that's true but exhaust gas is dry. You'll never see an exhaust manifold blocked. Because exhaust gas which was directed to the combustion chamber by egr is dry and won't be build up soot. But when it meets with oil fume coming from crankcase ventilation then things became ugly. Then dry exhaust gas and oil fume build up like shit. That's why the oil catch can is highly recommended. No oil fume no carbon build up. So easy.
