Күн бұрынWith this monumental painting, the first of the three large images that Eakins devoted to boxing (click on the links for a complement to see the others), the artist brought this theme definitively into the field of fine art, making at the same time a resounding declaration against the Puritan conventions of the time, which required that certain scenes of popular entertainment considered as vulgar should not be represented. Exactly the same approach as that of the Dutch painters who in the 16th century decided to paint men and women who smiled and who dared to show their teeth, even if they were not showable....
