A Simple way to grow in a personal Relationship with Jesus
| Talking to Jesus, Friend to Friend
TRANSCRIPT
If you have seen the movie Fiddler on the Roof, the hero Tevye is a Jew, and he has this wonderful relationship with God. Once, when his horse hurts its leg, he has to pull the cart himself. Then he looks to heaven and says, "Lord, I know we are the chosen people, but why can't you choose some other people for a change?" That's the kind of prayer I'm talking about-a friend to a friend.
Ignatius of Loyola teaches us this form of prayer in the Spiritual Exercises. It's one of the common forms of prayer, and nearly every prayer period, he tells us to use it at some point. He calls it the "colloquy"-in other words, a dialogue. He says, speak to Jesus as a friend speaks to a friend. In fact, Jesus himself says that he is our friend: "I have called you friends because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father."
Take a look into your prayer life. When do you pray? Only when you are in need? Do you ever thank God? Can you let Jesus know exactly what you're feeling? Is your prayer stiff and just words that you've learned? If that's so, then you must learn a friend-to-friend kind of prayer.
Now, what exactly is this kind of prayer? First of all, you can go to Jesus for any desire that you have. You can take all your feelings to Jesus; he is there for you. And there is nothing trivial in this relationship. You can be spontaneous in your prayer. You don't have to have fixed formulas or fixed prayers that you have learned by heart, though they have a special place, which I'll speak about sometime.
But the advantage of this kind of prayer is that you build up a personal relationship with Jesus. He is your friend, someone you can go to at any time. When do you use this prayer? First of all, as Ignatius tells us, during a regular prayer period, keep some time when you want to talk to Jesus as a friend to a friend. But you can use this especially at any moment of the day-while you're in the kitchen, at your workplace, or going to work.
I'll give you an example from St. Teresa of Avila. One day she was walking down the path and slipped in the mud. She looked to heaven and said, "Jesus, if this is the way you treat your friends, that's why you have so few." You see? A spontaneous way of praying-friend to friend. Build up this kind of prayer. Make it part of your life.
And may Almighty God bless you: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Have a wonderful day with Jesus.
