My sophomore year of college, Gary Shteyngart came to give creative writing workshop sessions to the senior writers. Being a sophomore grappling the basics of creative writing, the best I could do was attend his reading of "Super Sad True Love Story." The writing was like the man: incisive, funny, unadorned, and a tad flippant. Some time later, I came across his New Yorker article discussing his journey into watch collecting and his relationship with Hodinkee. This video feels like the warm hum of finishing a book I've read a dozen times. Thank you

The episode started great...Junghans, Nomos, ALS...but then went down the familiar Rolex and PP route. Thankfully, the references were tastefull and were connected to the entire collection, they were not just "added investiments" or "see what I can get". The Universal Geneve at the end was both a surprise and a delight to see. Great episode if not one of the best in the series.

This is right up there as one of the best-ever episodes of "Talking Watches!" I think various episodes really stand out because of the guest (and their passion for watches), their collection, or because of some of the guests' stories behind their collection or individual watches. Sometimes it's a combination of these different things. Ben Clymer (for sure) has hosted many of the best "Talking Watches." For me some of the most interesting include John Mayer's first appearance (filmed in New York), Jason Singer, and John Goldberger - with several others deserving a mention too! Cole Pennington's "Talking Watches" with David Williams was another great one too! To pair Jack Forster with Gary Shteyngart for this episode was a masterstroke! The best episodes are often as much about the person (collector/enthusiast) as they are about their watches, and the Gary Shteyngart piece is exactly that. What an interesting man! I've never read any of Gary's works but when you learn a little about his life/background, you appreciate his use of English and humour even more....
