As an African I can say that the French have been operating a modern day colonial system in francophone countries, that's why they are generally poorer than anglophone African countries. The French uses these countries to prop up their economy, forcing them to pay yearly colonial taxes, forced to use the French Francs which they've abandoned for Euros, the French supports all dictators. You guys are wrong about colonialism being a small project, maybe by personnel and investment it was a small cost but in terms of power projection it is still very much profitable venture. That's why the French never fully abandoned it and the British created the world bank ICSID to protect their colonial investments in former colonies. That's why these countries can't reclaim those colonial investments/companies /land back, ask Mandela he wrote extensively about this and that's why SA have been Allies with the Russians.

All in all, billions more are spent on your continent every decade than ever were in South Korea, which started out poorer than the Congo after the war. If you'd actually been able to devvelop, you'd have done so already and gained an ability to defend your own interests by now. Lost cause.

Samo hit the nail on the head when he spoke about watching tv from the early 2000’s and noticing how different a time it was. As a millennial I remember being in the early 2000’s as a teenager and thinking “wow everything is so advanced and computerized, nothing could possibly ever be more advanced than this”. Oh how wrong I was lol. Watching tv from the early 2000’s now feels the same way watching tv from the 1970’s felt to me as a teenager. Also I relate to the 3rd world/first world experience in America today. I’m an airline pilot and I go to some pretty bad cities. I live in a very nice area in Florida, but lots of times I end up staying in hotels in other random American cities where there are fent zombies and just other horrible stuff that you wouldn’t expect in our country in this day and age. Comment on hospitality culture. Deep South...... you have a knee high fence between sidewalk and front door (best if covered with climbing roses!) That way you can politely acknowledge a neighbor walking by, while on the porch. This is so you can engage without too much convo. just a hand wave and "good evening". Next gradiation....you have a deep set *elevated* porch with a couple of chairs. To engage with walking neighbor you can "step off" the porch.... but leave them on the sidewalk. Still retaining physical separation.... Short chit chat. Next, you invite said neighbor up on the porch (🎉🎉Whooppee🎉🎉). This is a significant honor. Offer a refreshment. Tea....with mint from the garden...no lemon, that's so "Applebee's" or "Chili's" (low brow, imo). Sugar, by the CUBE only, none of this Jethro Boudin, Beverly Hillbillies, shovel sized spoons (gasp!) And so on and do forth until you're comfortable ( in 5 or 6 years) inviting them into the parlor, aka 'living room' (uggh, what terminology !) As for the present day practice, especially with pre-teens & up of allowing a child's friend into the bedroom area is just BAD taste and creepy. Children stay in the "public area" of the house.

One big military difference between 17th century and the 21st is the DIRECTION of trends in military policy. The 30-year war DID see massive use of mercenary armies, however, it was the last time that was so, as the horror of that experience combined with the massive increase in bureaucratic centralisation led quickly to the setting up of ethnically based citizen standing armies. We are rapidly moving in precisely the OPPOSITE direction today. More and more reliance on mercenaries, and less on citizen armies.

What Samo says about very modern noce upper middle class enclave's is so true. I helped my friend who is a veterinarian moved from upstate New York to Northern Mexico 2 years ago we drove my truck and a trailer all the way down across the border It was quite the adventure It was very mexico-like until you got to where he lived and it was his big gated compound and everything was very high end like all the richer folks walled them selves off. The only thing that was different was there were doing new construction on another building and they didn't have one piece of heavy equipment They just had loads of laborers because thats still cheaper. I saw the same thing in the Philippines when I went to BGC is like their international business city just outside of Manila. BGC was actually much better and safer then Americans cities down town, They have security guards and police officers all over and they don't allow homeless people or beggars and it's kept very clean. If medieval people thought "madness was contagious," it was likely at least in part because there were actual incidents of mass insanity when the grain supply in an area got contaminated with ergot. Completely understandable. I’m sure most French citizens are weary with the interventions in Africa in the same way that Americans are tired of being the “world police” and endless wars in the Middle East while our country is stagnating domestically. We essentially fought in Iraq and Afghanistan for my entire childhood with few positive things to show for it. Seems like the entire Western world is pulling back as China gets more aggressive. Similar to the immediate aftermath of World War II, except this time there is no strong United States to fill the gap vacated by the other Western powers. Even we are tired of that after about 80 years of being the global hegemon. I think the US will become much more isolationist again over the coming decades, like we were prior to World War I.

I grew up with brown people in Toronto. I don't feel those 40 people in Sweden are foreigners. I'm in China now and some guy approached me at a nightclub, hey where are you from? I'm from Canada, and I asked if he's from Canada as well. No, Pakistan. Oh wow OK. Same with Jamaicans or Tamil Tigers in the 1990s, just regular middle school classmates

Masculine gay men have the least hangups about being misogynistic because they view women neither as peers, nor as mates. That's an excellent point which isnt brought up enough.

You're right about CHARLES TAYLOR as a writer -- he needs an editor, maybe three. As a philosopher the best thing that can be said of him is he's not a pinhead analytical philosopher.

20:20 I was randomly watching an old episode of the suite life of Zack and Cody, and they had a scene where one twin dressed like a girl and the other made fun of him. I thought to myself “wow they could never make this show today because it would be transphobic”. It really is a sad commentary on how we truly aren’t the same country we were even 20 years ago

28:50 In the past France also blocked several attempts of deporting refugees from Europe into safe zones in Africa. So their colonial system was completely backwards. It probably profited some people and it was about prestige.

You can't stop the network, not in a society founded on Judeo-Christian values. Moreover a society with a sizable practicing/believing Christian population. There are other positive considerations I would rather not disclose. Rethink China, they were propped up by the West several times.
