My father was a big Talking Heads fan and this song was one of his favorites. Naturally, he played it for me and it became one of my favorites as well. He passed away a couple months ago, so I can't help but think about him every time I hear it. RIP Dad.

Your dad had excellent taste, and I'm sure that wasn't the only thing he passed down. Remembering our loved ones through music is just one of the ways we can commemorate them. You should turn up the tunes, think about your Dad and smile. I believe he would do the same.

One of the intriguing things about Talking Heads is the subtlety and ambiguity of their lyrics. They're never right in your face with their message, leaving the interpretation up to you. I think one of the hallmarks of poetry, literature, and art is giving room to the observer to feel different things about it, as if the words and images are simply a prompt to get you to reflect on your current situation and perhaps give you some new insight or emotion into it.

Lyrics: Last time she jumped out the window, Well, she only turned and smiled. You might think she would say something, But you'd have to wait a while. Well the lady don't mind. No, no, no, the lady don't mind She just turns her head and disappears, I kinda like that style Little boat that floats on a river, it's drifting through a haze She stops by whenever she wants to, well, there she goes again Well, it's no trouble at all. No, no, no trouble at all Well, what she does Is all right with me, and I kinda like that style Come on. come on. I go up and down. I like this curious feeling. I know, I see. It's like make believe. Cover your ears so you can hear what I'm saying. I'm not lost but I don't know Where I am. I got a question. All right. All right. This is what we like. Who knows, who knows, What I'm thinking She says love is not what she's after, And everyone knows. Each time she looks in the mirror, She lets her feelings show. Well, the lady don't mind No, no, no, the lady don't mind. Well, what she says is all right by me, And I kinda like that style Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Here we go again I don't know, I don't know, What I'm sayin'. Hey man. Hey man. I sure don't feel the same She likes to say what she's feeling Hey. Did I get a big surprise. I know you think so. Come on. Come on. She says anything. Who knows, who knows, What she's thinking.

OK, been waiting about 30 years to post this (yes before youtube), but it's amazing when you decipher the "language." 0:03 - Tina in robe, window mostly obscured by drapery 0:07 - City skyline, lighted pointy buildings, moon rising 0:15 - Train, boat 0:38 - Red chair, blue chair. Turn black in a bit. 0:42 - 7 of Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, or Water/Cups, Air/Swords, Earth/Disks - 777 0:56 - 7 of Diamonds, Spades - Only 77 this time 0:58 - Drapery pulled from the window, light enters 1:06 - Open robe is closed 1:15 - Second drapery pulled down 1:23 - Robe is opened 1:26 - Exclamation mark - Can you say that on television? :-) 1:27 - Red, yellow, blue, back to gray 1:30 - Red chair on floor, Tina with yellow TShirt 1:32 - Blue, yellow, red, back to gray 1:36 - Yellow, blue, red, back to gray 1:39 - Red, yellow, blue, back to gray 1:44 - Yellow, blue, red and spinning 1:47 - Blue, red, yellow and spinning 1:50 - Question mark 1:51 - Yellow and blue, spinning and slapping with a stick 1:54 - Red, blue, yellow 1:59 - Gray, blue, yellow, red sheet 2:14 - Red chair, blue chair, yellow chair 2:20 - 7 of hearts, clubs, diamonds - Water/Cups, Fire/Wands, Earth/Disks 2:28 - 7 of diamonds only 2:29 - Wrapped in a cacoon 2:31 - All the black sevens 2:35 - Partially out of cacoon 2:38 - Nine black 7s 2:41 - Exclamation mark 2:42 - Yellow, blue, red 2:47 - Blue, red, yellow 2:51 - Red, yellow, blue 2:55 - Yellow, blue, red 2:59 - Blue, red, yellow - Also open the veil motion and SPIN 3:02 - Red, yellow, blue 3:03 - Tina doing waves with arms 3:06 - Yellow, blue, red 3:08 - Just Chris with sticks 3:09 - Blue, red, yellow 3:13 - Tina in robe, open windows, back out to city at night 3:15 - Light go out 3:17 - Boat on river, train 3:36 - Pointy lighted building, lighted windows 3:41 - Open windows, no Tina First, pull out Liber 777, which can be found on line at Sacred Books or OTO archives. Coincidentally, this 777 is not the 777 in the video. Or not specifically, anyway. Correspondence 19 is Tarot card 8, old name Strength, OTO name Lust. The card represents the Scarlet Woman of Revelations, who’s number is 777. That’s the 777 we are talking about. The Lady is the Scarlet Woman, 777. Pretty clear. Now the color correspondences at 19 are: greenish yellow, deep purple, grey, and reddish amber for King, Queen, Emperor, Empress columns. It’s not a stretch to interpret the colors we labeled as yellow, blue, gray, and red as the four above. So that explains who “The Lady” is, the 777s, and the colors. What about the other symbols? Well, at it’s basest, you can think of them as sexual imagery. The question mark, waves, opening the window, opening the robe, shedding the cacoon are symbols of the female generative force. The exclamation mark, the spinning, sticks, towers, train, and boat are symbols of the masculine. To go any deeper would be inappropriate without asking David, or someone else with more knowledge of the imagery. I hope someone out there finds this useful. Next I should tackle Band on the Run, or Stairway to Heaven. (Joke.)
