I think Jones didn't realize he could ask for his release. During the press conference he was asked about asking about his release and he seemed confused by the idea that he could ask for his release. After a couple seconds he responds he wants to do what is best for the team and that he would have discussions with the team and decide what was best for the team. So I think he didn't even think about a release until he was asked if he would during the press conference.

I've been a NYG fan since 1962, and have watched at least a dozen terribly mistaken high draft pics (top 10) made by my team. First was the selection of Tucker Fredrickson as the 1st overall in 1964. Y.A. Tittle was retiring and NYG selected Frederickson instead of Joe Namath, Gale Sayers or Dick Butkus. Gettlemans "falling in love" with Jones and selecting him over Josh Allen has proven to be the single largest miss in NYG draft history.

I said when Jones was benched that the Giants lost just about what was left of it's heart and soul. We saw that play out today when down 30-0. I disagree - you guys were so worried about the injury guarantee - I think benching Jones will get Daboll fired. Mara doesn't tolerate tanking. Never has, never will. I think they decided to release him days ago. Why else would he have had a “retirement press conference” the day before talking all in past tense and thanking them for everything like he had already left the team. I think the Giants set up their whole “we will give you a chance to step down” talk (asks for his release) just like they did with Tom Coughlin and Dave Gettleman. Also, Brian Daboll doesn’t seem all that upset about it that’s for sure lol. They also signed a third QB immediately. This decision was made days ago and it’s all lies.
