Finland has a total war concept, it means that in a war the whole society will take part in various ways. and this means everyone always must be prepared, once a year Finland has a "suprise catastrophic event" and it can be a "gas leak in a shopping centre" just as it can be a "volcanic eruption in a nearby island" and every single affected city or region will be reviewed after how they responded. when a real event happened and cables were cut by a ship dragging its anchor, it took mere six hours for Finland to assess damage, estimate cause, figure out which ship it may have been, prepare marines and board the ship..six hours. just shy of a normal working day, and that ship was seized after that incident. and this is fast, and this is also how the finnish society will be in a war, someone is at the front, another one secures the cats and dogs at home, a third one catches a spy, a fourth one organizes heating for the powerless..

Our nations are just as much dependent on Baltic sea shipping routes as Russia, maybe even more dependent. Therefore, freedom of navigation is important for us. If we break international rules by stopping ships in international waters just because they have Russian cargo, Russia will not hesitate harrassing and stopping our shipping, most probably in a much more dangerous way. Russia has no reputation to lose. This is why it is important all Baltic nations (except Russia) have a common interpretation of international laws and regulations. For example, Stopping ships just because they come from a Russian port would be illegal. But stopping 20 year old single hull tanker ships over 10 000 tons DW for safety inspection could be justified with environmental protection and maritime safety. Ships with shady documents of ownership and insurance could be stopped for checking their insurance status, and blacklisted. Most ships of the Russian shadow fleet belong to these categories.

@@paanikki ..indeed, Russia has demonstrated it's 'attitude' by ripping up important submarine cables - the response should be to be as much of a nuisance as possible.. Russia is, of course, bottled up in the Baltic in St Petersburg and by the Skagerrak.

I live nearby the Finnish Navy Headquarters and I am quite scared. I love Russian culture very much, especially Russian Classical Music and Russian Literature. I have many Russian friends, who reside in Finland, but I had to severe ties with the ones who support Putin. Not all Russians are evil, I believe. The ongoing hostility is very disturbing. Many Russians pretend to act as Ukrainians in public, but when they talk, it is not difficult to tell the difference between Russian and Ukrainian. Putin is evil.

@@joeordinary209 any real evidence of Russia having done this or "media can't lie?". For almost a century the relationship was ok between the two countries. And months after joining NATO Finland starts to get problems with its cables... You know even if they did it... Didn't Finland break all diplomatic relationship with its neighbor first? Didn't Finland close borders completely for made-up unproven allegations reasons? Didn't Finland announce they'll take all the private property owned by Russian citizens on their territory "just because"? Harassing, firing and insulting Russians living in Finland for years for the decision that was not even taken by any of them? Is this a normal and rational behavior? And in the end with all this done from finns side to completely break all links with its biggest neighbor that was bringing a half of their GDP through business - what did you expect from the Russians? Love and friendship?
@joeordinary209

@@sauh5865 Finland joined Nato due to Russian invasion of Ukraine. All 3 vessel that have cut cables are linked to Russian shadow fleet carrying Russian cargoes loaded in Russian port, breaching sanctions. I think its Russian revenge for joining Nato, that is all they can do. Obviously Russia will never admit, just like they don't admit any of the crimes they do. This case is going to the court, so further info will be revealed later, but even if there would be videos of Mr grand pa him selves cutting the cables they would deny it so don't expect the real power of the event ever be trialed, that is for sure. But the value of the cargo will compensate partially to repair cost.
