Most of the fish is sold to the eu, and if they don't buy it then you don't need to catch it because you will be stuck in port with nothing to pay your bills with.

Fish costs high primarily due to overfishing of cod. When I was young, haddock was always more expensive than cod. It's now reversed and I haven't been in a fish & chip shop for some years that sells cod, unless you pay more for it.

Regarding EU pressure upon PM Starmer - True story, years ago, but not that long ago, under EU rules, huge continental fishing vessels (mainly Spanish and some French) were allowed to fish off the coast of Northern England "outside the three mile limit" - devastating the local Northumberian fishing livelihoods and local communities!!! The huge catches were taken back, processed in Spain and some of it actually finding its way back to the coastal towns of North of England and SOLD at a higher cost!!!! You just could not make this undefended unpatriotic stupidity up!!! Where was the Political outrage and defense from all politicians!!!??

i can't believe this has been going on since the 70's (icelandic cod wars) every country has its legally defined terratorial waters but the french and spanish think they can wander into ours at will whereas british fishermen mostly adhere to the rules . the opinion of those in power always seems to be *shrug* "ah well it's only a few fish "but the point is if you overfish a certain area , take too many adult fish say , there will be less young fish next year to grow up and have less babies the next year etc and if this were to happen the french and spanish would just say 'we're not catching much here anymore' and go back to their own waters but we'd be shafted and have no fish ! and its not just the brits have less fish to eat themselves or sell as exports , eventually the fishermen say'we cant make a living anymore let's become an unemployment statistic or move to the city and pack bags at morrisons' . the fact our politicians do not care is staggering . starmer does not represent the interests of this country

The last decommissioning of fishing boats happened when we joined the E U. This destroyed many fishing towns all over the UK. The trauma was severe and the angst is still apparent! Would the Goverment consider scrapping a London based industry and moving that industry to, say, Frankfurt. Not damn likely!

If they pay to access our waters, I don't have an issue with it, if they're given access.. like pre brexit.. well, it's one of the reasons I voted for brexit. Our Waters, Our Fish. Given how french and spanish fishermen treat jersey and guernsey territorial waters, I'd generally be against them getting access, they've destroyed their own fishing areas, we don't need them destroying ours. That said.. if we gave them access it might mean they run over some of the migrant boats.. which could be an interesting situation.
