I'm a writer, self-taught, who left school at 15. But to the credit of newspapers, magazines, and book publishers, you could get published without a university degree as long as the quality of writing was what they wanted, and you could create revenue for them. About 6-8 years ago, I discovered that many writing jobs were no longer open to me. Straight white males were not even invited to some job openings. I think such an unchangeable predisposition currently makes it very hard to land a job as a writer or have articles/books published. It seems not just biased but classist. Straight white males, even those who were born into poverty and who struggled to teach themselves, are now immediately ignored. Yet, any non-white person with a degree, any at all, it seems, will get their foot in the door before them. This new hysteria really hurts the white working class for this reason. It's not as if life hasn't already been tough for this demographic. In view of publishing novels, there are possibly a lot of talented, poor white males whose books will now be ignored. The book "The New Puritans" gives evidence that tells us some publishers in the UK made decisions to not publish white males. It seems vastly unfair. It's also reminiscent of the 1940s. I understand that historically, certain races have been treated horribly, and it's regretful that happened, but if you read books such as "The Making of the English Working Class" or related to the US, "White Trash" by Nancy Isenberg, or even "White Cargo," you'll see that non-whites have also had it very, very tough. I don't think penalizing them is very fair. Statistically, the new woke phenomenon comprises mostly middle to upper-middle classes. It's popular among elites. It seems as if they could be creating/supporting/endorsing polarisation in order to prevent solidarity among the poor and working class. According to W E B Dubois, something similar happened in the American South during Reconstruction. Wokemess, IMO, is not only myopic, but it is also pretty damned sinister.
