David Starkey is compulsive listening. Why the man isn't an advisor to The Foreign Office I don't know. The Foreign Secretary doesn't know her geography; so I imagine she's more than capable of demonstrating her lack of history knowledge too.

Dr Starkey continues to impress me regarding his extraordinary ability to link the past with the present. This enables him to speak with unrivalled authority on a broad range of subjects. We are so fortunate that he can dissect the most complicated and controversial subjects and bring them down to “street level”. We are very indebted, thanks so much Starkey!

Not a fan of the frequently anti Scottish, Starkey, however he at least is more objective than most on this subject. He also omitted to mention that Britain and France were allied to Turkey at the time of the Crimean war. Slavery of Christians was legally accepted at the t in the Ottoman Empire then, the slave markets of Belgrade were in operation till the 1890s. Starkey like all clever men picks his facts carefully to fit his arguments.

Well said. It’s disingenuous of Starkey. Likewise for Syria, pre-civil war it was peaceful. The Jihadis supported by the Western Neo-cons destabilised the region. The same group did the tactics in Ukraine While Britain is great for ending slavery. Starkey have habit of playing down atrocities in Ireland and Africa by the British empire

David Starkey "lies" by omission. He forgot to say that it was the Soviet Union, with 25 million dead, who beat Hitler, who preoccupied 70% of Hitlers armies and enabled D-Day to succeed, who's land was butchered and burned in the worst battles of the European war. Having witnessed their land and people beig raped in a totally barbarous way, it is not surprising that they wanted to exact revenge in the most brutal manner.

Who can explain to me: Why this form of torture and "genocide" has not happened in other - i.e. all, most or even many - cities occupied by Russia (unless done by Ukrainians)? Why the Russians and the locals would leave bodies out on the streets for weeks and then leave evidence of atrocities behind as they move on to their next mission in orderly fashion? Why none of the images of bodies turned up during these weeks, when facilities such as Internet in the city were still operating? Why Russians would leave all these facilities still operating and for no obvious reason torture and kill just these few people? What you "know" about Putin being responsible for this - even if it was Russians who are responsible, there's no pattern of this and it may have been rogue soldiers? Why this belongs in a category of "genocide" where thousands might have been blown to pieces just to pass the time, but were left unharmed? Why satellite images of blobs are sufficiently convincing "evidence"? Why a thorough investigation from many independent parties is not underway, given the seriousness of accusations an capacity to proceed? Especially, why the mayor of this town failed to mention any of this atrocity in his "reclaimed city" victory speech? Because all I see otherwise is a mindless hatred of Russians and no answers. Thanks. Why, also did these images appear the day after Ukrainian leaders were quoted at stating they were going back to the town specifically with an agenda to "root out and destroy all those residents who cooperated with the Russian soldiers?" As one other commentator put it, "Perhaps for selling the Russians some eggs, they were then killed?" It's potentially a similar scenario to the fate of so many Afghans who worked with America and were then left to be tortured and killed by their fleeing "allies". Are these bodies real? I've even heard - not seen - of footage where some bodies lying down waved during or sat up after they thought the camera rolled by. True? I'm tempted to say they were calling for help, if it is true, but not after lying in the street for weeks first, I'm sure. So, are the dead actually Russian sympathizers killed by Ukrainians? Please demonstrate how that could not be the case? Ta. Note: It strikes me as perfectly obvious, given all that I can learn and with all my critical thinking at play, that Putin did not approach this event with an agenda to torture and kill Ukrainian people. There is solid room for doubt in every aspect. Peace is required now, and OUR decency in practice is critical before we preach and damn - and destroy - others from what we don't know.

Starkey claims Ukraine didn't exist until 1945... Bad history. As well as the medieval state of Kyiv, Ukraine was first declared an independent state in 1918 and from 1921 was a union Republic within the USSR - there was no constitutional change in 1945. Whatever else he is saying, he is wrong in stating this.

On holiday in Spain about 2011, many Russians. Sullen, miserable looking, non smiling, gave everyone suspicious looks, rude, didn't queue, walked AT you on pavement, if you didn't get out of the way, even for elderly. They'd have knocked you to the ground if you didn't dodge them. Until ... on the evening full of drink they were singing loudly, shouting and temporarily 'happy' before the next day of misery. Only once a little Russian girl said hello to my mum and me in a lift..that was a shock! All this behaviour a hang over from Stalin and an oppressive regime? Most likely.

Before even questioning the reality of Ukraine's opportunistic claims about how wickedly Russian soldiers are behaving, the WWII analogy is ridiculous. Did Soviet troops commit atrocities against Germany after they were invaded and subject to millions of deaths? Yes. But then again so did the Czechs in the Sudetenland. The crimes in the Balkans were utterly monstrous, and then you have the problem of what German soldiers themselves did during the War. The idea that Russia conducts war in some uniquely savage way in comparison to Europeans is ludicrous.

David Starkey mentions how our language is being changed to mean different things. I noticed the start of this 40 years ago. The original meaning of the word Gay meant “full of joy or mirth.”. We all know now that it means people who have a desire for people of the same sex. I know many people who call themselves "Gay" and most of them really don't live up to the old meaning of the word.

When they abolished serfdom in the 1860s, it didnt make the regime more popular because the former serfs had to pay the landlords for their freedom as a loan. As for them being the "heirs" of something, I would argue that they are the heirs of Genghis Khan and the Golden Horde in their forms of government.

The nations who make up the five eyes security arrangement should form a solid security and economic block. The biggest difficulty with this is that the USA would have to reduce it's level of hegemony, which it would be reluctant to do, which is unfortunate for the USA because otherwise its hegemony will be taking away from it..the USA is likely to end up a very large fish in a pool that only it inhabits..

We can talk about Russia and Ukraine all day, and the reasons for this war, (and there are many) , but the simple truth is Russia is just reminding the Slavic nations that they are the "Daddy". When you think of Europe , think of 4 peoples, Slavs, Latins, Celts, Germanics, this is the real crux of Europe, and the cause of most of its wars. The different mind sets/ambitions of these four Groups of People.

One of the problems with Starkey's comments is that no one would have posited some enormous difference between the behavior of those in Ukraine in the past (the Kyiv Rus or later, when it was part of the Belarus-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and the Russia of the past. Nor was there such a significance between the behavior of Russia and Ukraine during the period of the USSR. But the difference between these nations now - is absolutely striking: Russia barbaric, Ukraine tolerant and civilized. And Starkey does not seem to realize that Russia is losing this war.
