Or better still, outlaw faith based school, outlaw religious ceremonies in school, promote secular values and try to achieve a semblance of integration in British society rather than the continued separation of “communities” and the atomisation of British society.

@@UglyRugby yeah, because secular values are really working. Take God - and specifically Christianity - out of our culture, you get the chaos we see all around us. The west has its values, its education, it's hospitals, rooted in Christianity which, up until 5 minutes ago, worked. Christian based schools provide the best education out there. There's a reason why non believers want to get their kids into religious schools.

@@UglyRugby But all that is doing is giving in to the pressure brought about by issues such as Katherine is facing. When did we ever have a problem with a Catholic school, a Church of England school or a Jewish school? Why should they be closed down because another faith is causing problems? What might we close down next in order to stem this particular tide? Pubs - because Islam forbids the consumption of alcohol? Kennels and owning dogs as pets because they're also haram? The selling of pork in supermarkets and butchers shops? It's a very slippery slope.

I try to be honest. If I choose to pray, it’s probably not going to be in the street, outside an abortion clinic and for the camera. If I were to do those things for the general or specific harassment of others going about their lawful business, I might not be so quick to describe what I was doing as prayer. The greatest commandment, which is in iteration of the philosophical golden rule is to love our neighbour as ourself. Prayer as an instrument for the vilification, harassment or unwarranted interference with others who may be vulnerable or troubled in any event, does not fall within my own ideas of a bona fide conversation with God. What staggers me is the fundamental gullibility of those who believe any old crank in the street when they claim they are praying.

I live in tbe part of NW London referred to here. It was a melting pot when I first moved here 35 years ago and still is, albeit a different kind of melting pot now. The school certainly serves some very deprived areas, although not as deprived as many in East or South London. That said, objectively it's not quite as "tough" as it's portrayed here. I have very nice Romanian and Polish neighbours who buy me presents at Christmas and Easter. I regularly walk past Katharine Birbalsingh's school at chucking-out time and the behaviour of its pupils is far better than it was at my extremely tough all-boys' grammar school 50 years ago. Katharine is 100% right in saying that multiculturalism requires sacrifices and right to ban prayers. I for one stand with her. What's significant is that there are other religious groups at this school. and others in the area, e.g. Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, Catholics, and they don't seem to have a problem with the restrictions on prayers. It strikes me that these groups are willing to make the kind of sacrifices that are necessary in what is an irrevocably diverse society. I hope that Katharine's approach is vindicated and that this action against her school doesn't succeed ; she is doing a great job for NW London's young people.

Christianity was in my school song, daily hymns in assembly, our calendar with its traditions and ceremonies, the terms and holidays, Easter and Christmas… Christianity was the glue. Is the West. Comes first. Must not bow out of our Nation so as to accommodate foreigners sho come to the West wishing to mould it into their image. Christianity is not a tradition. It is everything.

There is no reason prayers can not be made later: "In Islamic tradition, Muslims perform five formal prayers at specified times each day. For people who miss a prayer for any reason, the tradition allows the prayer to be made up at a later time without it automatically counting as a sin that cannot be rectified."

The schedule and rules of Michaela School are given at the very beginning before the student even applies to go there. The student and parents are told there is no segregation for religion or race and student unity is their top value. If prayers at set times of the day are the top value of that family they do not have to go to that school. Why go to a school that is incompatible with your family’s values and then demand they change? That’s ridiculous.

I used to work for a company in Bradford. And there was a designated prayer room. There was even official times for people of Muslim faith to be able to go and pray. The issues that occured because of this were. Some members of staff that weren't of the Muslim faith. Took advantage of that, and had that paid for time out. The other problem is the rest of other faiths weren't happy as they wouldn't have been able to down tools to go and pray. The other annoying thing as well is the management were afraid to call out the none Muslims that were going to pray for obvious reasons! Now that's in an adult environment. Imagine trying to deal with the logistics of this in a school one!

Closing down faith schools that aren't a problem in order to prevent more issues like this strikes me as collective punishment. Muslims have been in the UK for decades but it's only relatively recently that 'prayer rooms' have been a feature in any school or workplace. If they managed before why has it become a problem now? No parent is forced to apply to Katherine's school, so why have the parents of this child created a problem for themselves, the school and the other pupils? If their faith is the most important thing then they should have opted for a school that meets those needs.

@@Michael-sq5gn Plenty don't now because of their jobs. What if prayer time coincided with an airline pilot taking off, landing or dealing with turbulence? What if a surgeon is operating or doctor/nurse is dealing with a critical condition? Firemen can't put down their hoses or policeman stop their pursuit of a criminal and start praying; bus and train drivers don't stop to pray - I could go on but you get the gist. People manage, and according to a few comments I've read made by Muslims, it's perfectly fine to skip a prayer time and add it on to a later one.

Muslim prayer isn't a private affair; when it's done in groups outside of mosques there's always an element of highly visible public spectacle to it, or taking over and claiming a space (eg. the amount of space needed for it, compared to prayer in which people just stand or sit), a signalling to all non-Muslims that they are not part of the "in group" and to either submit to them or keep away.

I was loosely attached to CofE as a Brit born in England. In Oz, I had to look for a primary school (7&8yo) for my 2 boys after being disillusioned by a 'diverse' state school. The local Catholic school appeared to hold the community values I upheld. On pre-admittance interview, they were kind enough to accept my boys if they followed all the requisite religious practices of the school. Those religious practices were fundamentality the moral social & spiritual guidance that I wished to attain for my children. Of course I agreed. Both boys were so much happier there than they'd ever been. They decided not to become Catholic but took away with them an understanding & confidence of community values (instead of the dog eat dog 'diverse' state school attitudes that largely banned Christian customs in order not to offend). My boys are now in their 40's & everyone that knows them still appreciate their honesty & humanity,

I never thought of England has a multicultural country growing up it was never called this and i never seen any evidence of this, it was just your indigenous British (English, Irish, Welsh, and scottish ancestry mix) with a tiny amount of ethnic minorities who you never really came into contact with apart from the corner shop who were mainly Arab people, this bombardment of multiculturalism and diversity we see and hear about now is a much more recent thing, then again i never grew up in London but even in London it's still only a recent thing over the last 60 years or so, London still had a 98% white population in 1961, now this diversity and multiculturalism is constantly drummed into us on a daily basis, now they want to make the whole country like London it seems.
