Pay more direct to farmers and we’ll have no issue. My 200 acre farm business makes 30k a year. The interest on the inheritance tax equates to about that. Selling land to cover the tax reduces that profit to the level that makes it unviable. I want to help society by creating food. I work about 65 hours a week and take no holidays. 8th generation farmer. I agree with the tax, just not the level they set it at. This isn’t because farmers are incompetent. The industry operates on, really, really slim margins and if you spend the time researching that you’ll see there’s a large amount of evidence supporting this. The impact of this policy is huge. I’ve never ever protested, but I’ll be in parliament on Tuesday.

The Labour government's latest proposals, including burdensome regulations and policies that penalize farmers, threaten to devastate the UK’s agricultural sector. This is particularly concerning given the nation's current levels of domestic food production: 85% of our beef and veal, 82% of our poultry, 64% of our pig meat, and an impressive 114% of mutton and lamb. That 114% reflects not just self-sufficiency but also a surplus, allowing us to export lamb and support the UK economy. By waging war on farming, these policies risk reducing our domestic food production, driving up reliance on costly imports, and eroding centuries of careful land stewardship. This is not just a betrayal of our farmers but also a direct threat to the UK’s food security, leaving us at the mercy of foreign suppliers for basic essentials. It's the kind of short-sighted governance that only Westminster's most detached could deliver.
