In the U S. it depends on the state you live in. It seems that California and New York have implemented all the genderless bathroom policies. Other states have proceeded with caution. I think there's quite a dichotomy in adolescent boys, some being grotesque and vulgar around girls and others uncomfortable just in the presence of girls. The loos at the school where I worked went unisex. We had no end of discipline issues as a result. Added to that, adults weren’t allowed in ( child protection issues). So, an 11 year old girl had to put up with an 18 year old boy, but not a female teacher in her loo. Ridiculous.

If schools have a toilet for the disabled, which many now do, it is usually a single, separate, unisex cubicle, where only one person at a time can go in. Therefore, a pupil who claims to be 'trans' or 'non-binary', and doesn't want to use the toilet of their real gender, should only be permitted to use the disabled toilet. The same applies to public toilets in the community, sports centres, supermarkets etc.

It's embarrassing enough, at that age, dealing with the onset of menstruation when it's a girls only toilet, but the idea of having boys there, who can be so immature and coarse at that age is just horrific. There was one revolting boy in my class that likes to lean across his desk and leer at the girls asking "Are yer on yer rags?". Then there are the shy boys that will be mortified by having to share toilet facilities with girls. My friend's younger brother was incredibly she, could barely come into the room in his own home to ask his sister something if she was there with other girls.

It has been going on for years, it’s not new. I worked in a new build school in 2016 and the toilets were unisex and used by students and staff. There were no doors into the actual toilets themselves. Just a round construction in the middle of the main corridor that had steel doors between you and the world passing by while you’re in the toilet.
