The opposition doesn't need to press or mark Rice. In an England shirt he marks himself out of the game 90% of the time when England defenders have the ball. He hides behind or follows the opposition 9 or 10, and often closes off his own space when he could just hold his position or back out a few steps to have space and positive body position to receive and play forward. His unwillingness to be an option is the main reason why England are so laboured in their build up play. All his defenders have is to slowly play out to the wingers, who are never in a position to go forward, so they play backwards, and repeat the process on the other side of the field. On the odd occasion he does show and receive, they look alright moving the ball forward.

I actually don’t agree with what souness said… I think Rice is actually pretty good on the half turn and moving forward with the ball. I actually don’t think he’s very good at sitting and reading the game.

Its not players getting found out, its the system in place that isnt getting the best out of them. England are so deep the midfield has to operate in such a big space when teams press high up. Foden and Bellingham playing on top of each other and Kane dropping deep, theres no space going forward as well.

keown is dreadful he is reading off his notes he looks lost and talks utter rubbish

Always does. A bit like Jenas, he talks with the confidence of a man who is spreading great wisdom, but when you examine what he actually says its very basic

declan rice was underrated at west ham, and now massively overrated now hes at arsenal

The idea of Saka and Gordon on the left could be quite exciting. I think Foden drops out. Mainoo and Rice holding, with Bellingham in the 10 role. If Bellingham runs out of energy bring on Foden, fresh legs running at tired defenders. Potential to work well.

Rice has been OK to be honest, it's been the wing play. Saka and foden can't stretch the wing backs and saka cannot run at people with speed and intent. I think Palmer and Gordon on the wings rice, Bellingham and foden in the middle would work well. Saka goes backwards to often, foden clearly drifts into the middle of the park. Kane needs a delivery so not his fault.

I’ve watched Rice play regularly for years. At West Ham we always said he’s really good at what he does but what he does is not a lot. He sits deep and fills gaps well and then passes the ball back or sideways.

Love how everyone in the comments showing how little they know about football it’s genuinely making me laugh how so many nobody’s are criticising the judgement of high level pro managers - yeah sure, a player who was a starter in every game for a 89 point team, alongside having heavy interest from Bayern Munich and a huge bid placed for him from Guardiola’s side is ‘average’ or ‘not very good’. Do you just want to admit you don’t like Martin Keown or the fact he plays for Arsenal (at team you probably don’t like) - yes he had a poor game, but everyone does. Honestly would feel no way if England got knocked out, no other fanbase is as fickle. 😂👍🤦♂️

Sigh.. As an unbiased non-english man let me let you all in, from an outsiders perspective... Basically EVERY english player is getting found out. It really makes (non-english) people wonder how in the hell the Prem is the best league in the world, when, on international level, you are So Boring to watch. But I've seen enough to know the problem is Southgate and his "system", end of.

I have also been wondering why Southgate doesn't play a natural leftback Saka to give him a chance to play Cole Palmer on the right wing. I am amazed that some former Arsenal fans have also seen it possible to do. If it was Pep he would deploy him there definitely.

Even WINNING THE TOURNAMENT will not be good for our fans - it’s horrible what we do to each other in football and in life; don’t get above your station! We hate the person next door succeeding!

What did Southgate do before he managed England again? In terms of tactics and formation Southgates credentials speak for itself.. Not sure what you expect from a man who is not even proven even at club level. Making a fuss over Luke Shaw like he is the only English LB in the world is bonkers. Southgate must come from the Moyes school of football. 😮 Simon Jordan said.. "One thing we will do is respect the opposition".. Because thats Southgates default? Why did Simon Jordan never say that about Moyes when Moyes was the king of over respecting opposition and not giving the same level of belief to his own players. Some of these pundits are so double standard when it comes to some managers.. Moyes being a prime example of how some managers get very little criticism from pundits while others are overly criticised.

Rice has been great in 2/3 games. Not good great stopping the defence being humiliated. Do you also want him to do Foden and Jude no.10 role. It’s insane but cus he’s an Arsenal player he’s criticised differently
@theowl-tt4ih3 ай бұрын
Southgate and the players got huge support from the media and fans - more than any time since 96 - and it seems to me they have really overreacted to the first batch of criticism they have got (mild at that) and it makes them look weak. They almost feel beyond question now. One other thing, tribalism is so entrenched in punditry its annoying. They would suggest playing a player from a club they played for TWENTY years ago in goal if it meant keeping them in the side. And that’s across multiple clubs. Its boring

'We should be beating'...Unless we change that attitude we will never succeed..The Slovaks could and should have done us...The game against the Swiss could easily have swung against us and against the Netherlands we faced a team that had lost two of their critical midfielders pre-tourney and we only done them at the death..coupled with some good Ref decisions in our favour..

Slovakia look decent so England had better Take them Seriously imo. As Are Italy, Switzerland and Most of All , Austria, Austria are good enought from what I've saw thus far to be able to go on and actually Win it. England thus far haven't looked as good as Any of the sides mentioned. (not yet anyway)
