Such a bad take, the best thing about the tournament so far has been the minows like Georgia and Romania having something to play for, proving they can compete if given a chance and not just making up the numbers. The old format produced boring defensive football because teams were scared rather than hopefull

In Romania’s defence they qualified top of their group so they would have been in under the old format anyway. My issue with the 24 team format is the lack of jeopardy in the group stages. They’d be better off just mirroring the WC format and making it 32 teams.

16 was a reasonable amount. 24 is too many and it gives some teams an advantage if their group is one of the last to finish knowing that a win will get them through in 3rd place. The same thing will happen at the next World Cup with 48 teams. 16 for the Euros and 32 for the World Cup were ideal amounts. Top 2 from each group qualifies, plain and simple.

Why does everyone in the media keep saying Ukraine are the first team not to qualify from the group stage of the Euros with 4 points when that is clearly not true? Russia and Croatia at Euro 2012 got 4 points and didn't qualify. At Euro 2004 Spain got 4 points and Italy got 5 points and didn't qualify. Unless they mean the first time under the 24 team format?

Still some notable teams didn't qualify for the tournament. Norway, Sweden etc. it will eventually be 32 teams in the future and it will get rid of the 3rd place teams scenario but may end up nullifying some final group games as dead rubbers.

Easy fix. Have 4 groups of six so each nation has a minimum 5 games and the top 2 from each group qualify directly to quater finals. So winner and runner up play maximum 8 games. Currently winner and runner up play 7 games. After 5 group games you should end up with the best 8 teams in quarter finals. Also this will also give those smaller nations that qualify for Euros additional participation. To make the group competitive teams finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th should be incentivised to compete by whatever position they finish in group counts towards their seedings for their world cup qualifying group. That will make team fight in every game

I agree. My first idea was to have 8 groups of three but past experience suggests that such format would be prone to match fixing. Four groups of six is a win-win situation. Smaller nations get to play more games, big nations can still progress even in case of an upset. There's just less randomness involved if there's more group stage games. I liked the traditional 16-team format too but I think more nations can play decent football now.

@@baze3SC think the most annoying thing is 3rd place out of a group of 4 qualifying for last 16. Also a group with all 4 teams on 4 points. Extra 2 group games would sort that mess out. Also minimum 5 games for each will mean they are involved within tournament. As it stands 8 teams and supporters are sent home in a little over 2 weeks. Sad especially those nations that are making their first appearance in decades or ever. More competitive on the line games will increase the overall quality of the smaller nations. Also the host nation will benefit in tourism for having all 24 nations supporters for an extra 2 group games. Also you know each group would have 3-4 big hitters with 2-3 smaller nations looking for an upset. I never understand some of the reasoning behind who comes up with formats like we currently have. Sometimes i think its Americans without being rude as they love playoffs and playin systems with alternative tables giving opportunities for the best of the rest and giving failing big teams a second chance. Football isn't designed historically like that.

@@errolneptune3995 True, Americans love their play-offs but their major sports leagues use best of seven format. If you have a bad day you can still win the series. Also the sports are different. e.g. there's much more scoring attempts in a basketball or an ice hockey game and the score usually reflects the team's actual performance. In football there's only a handful of scoring opportunities per game which introduces an element of luck, especially if there's only single play-off game to determine the winner. Play-off is a relatively new thing in football if we consider its whole history. However, having at least semifinals or quarterfinals is a good thing because in pure round robin format the winner might be determined before the last round of games and nobody wants to see meaningless matches.

They for some reason have changed that layout in the last few tourneys. You could always workout possible opponents beforehand. And you wouldn't meet a group member until the final.

I can understand the point of this argument, especially considering that Croatia at one point still had a theoretical chance to advance even with two points. However, two points in "group of death" is not quite the same as four points in a relatively playable group. Which brings me to my point - the initial draw also plays a very important role. Also, the argument about points can be equally applied to the top two. England advanced with 5 points as group winners (which means better seeding) whereas Turkey was considered 2nd with 6 points.

Simon keeps saying that the teams know the format before they go in, but that is neither here nor there. No country is going to refuse to participate because they disagree with the format. And sorry Simon, everybody is not "wise after the event", I've been saying this since before the 2016 tournament kicked off. The unfairness of the format comes from the groups that finish later, teams have a better idea of what to do to make sure they finish better off than the teams in 3rd place in the groups that finished already. Creating the exact scenario which was the whole reason the final two matches in each group kick off at the same time. You end up with an awful lot of matches with teams playing for draws or holding on to narrow defeats.

Maybe you could have 6 groups of 5 teams, then a team has to finish at least in the middle of a group to go through. However, then the tournament would be longer with more games, and the teams that go far in the competition will be exhausted by the time they reach the final. So, a reduction back to 16 teams makes more sense, but that is unlikely to happen since the WC has now been expanded to 48 teams.

Simon is right: third place teams qualify puts into question sporting integrity and removes the sense of jeopardy in tournaments. In addition to this, there's always tension between entertainment and sporting integrity. For the latter, the best thing to do would be to have every match in every group played at the same time. This, obviously, would take away from the fan experience and significantly reduce revenues.
