As Gabby said, he should have said we needed to play with the same level of attacking pace that we did the the first 25 mins, for the second half! The guys a joker! He didn't really do much before that. Mainoo was the one who instantly provided energy. Bowen did something worthwhile attacking immediately and then turned into a second RB.

Completely agree. Around 60-70 mins in he wasn't offering anything that a new pair of legs would have. "we took a lot out of ourselves in that first half", then why is Southgate taking so long to make any changes. You conserve energy by swapping players when they are needed, not slowing the game to a crawl because you ran a bit too much earlier on. Toney or Palmer should have replaced Kane earlier on. Southgate's caution is so frustrating.

Ended the game with 3 CDMS in a group match with Serbia. Sat on a 1-0 lead for 70 minutes rather than pushing forward for the 2nd goal. Same old England Southgate never ever learns. Had we pushed for the 2nd and got it and THEN played as we did from immediately after Judes goal it would have been the perfect performance. The performance was identical to the Croatia semi at the WC ; took the lead early then sat back and conceded 2. You HAVE to go for the 2nd (unless you score late-ish of course) but GS clearly hasn't learnt that so we , I'm afraid , will come up short again.

Subbing Kane would have done absolutely nothing. If the striker doesnt ever recieve the ball (long kicks from the keeper and speculative passes from deep) then it makes no difference. Tactical changes needed to take place far more than personnel. Swapping kane for another striker would have yielded the exact same result.

Yep. Southgate's obsession with Harry Kane is why England will never win anything under him. At the last world cup Scaloni always used all his 5 substitutes in every game and only Messi started and ended a game in the forward position. He did same at the Copa America and Argentina won both trophies. Southgate stubbornly kept Kane on the pitch even when England were losing against France and brought an inform Rashford on with less than 10 minutes to go in the quarterfinals of the last world cup. The pace and trickery of Watkins was needed in the 2nd half against Serbia who were unlucky to lose. Reliance on the trophyless Harry Kane will send England home early!

the most depressing thing about this is that it's about to get worse. Southgate goes full 'park the bus' for matchday 2, he did it against Scotland in 21 and did it again against USA at the world cup. He's worked out that if you won your first game, then if you stop your opponent getting 3 points in the second game, it pretty much guarantees you'll go through.

I rate Kane, but unless he's scoring in this Southgate system, it's like playing with 10 men against teams that come to sit deep and frustrate England. Play Bellingham as a false 9 and get another body in the midfield to break down the 11 men behind the ball opposition. The reason we keep having these 30 minute 'backs-to-the-walls' desperate windows like against teams, like we did in the Second half last night, is because we're playing with 10 men. Just play Kane against the teams that attack us, generally the opposition where it's a real 50/50 in the KO stages. This really isn't rocket science. But Southgate doesn't have the bottle to drop players like Kane. This is the reason England need a strong manager.

A stopped clock is right twice a day, I guess! Kane looked off the pace. Foden seemed more a casualty of the formation/personnel (Trippier LB), with Shaw I imagine he won't be quite as ineffectual. Part of the problem is that Kane seemingly isn't allowed to come deep any more like he used to, which used to be a problem, but Bellingham is the kind of player that England were missing when Kane did that before!

The result is a good one. Thanks to Saka and Bellingham. Rice was solid, kept the ball well and offered an outlet under pressure where necessary. Bowen offered a good burst of energy down the right and even created a chance which Kane should have buried. Other than that, too many anonymous players. A bit more patience, clinical touch and luck from Serbia and they would have changed the score line in the second half. A better team than Serbia will punish England if that's how they perform again.

If it wasn't for Pickford we would have lost last night. Southgate hasn't got the killer instinct one requires to win a trophy. He's ideology from the bench is why we didn't beat Italy in the final 3 years ago. And it's the same now, he hasn't learned from that final.

Southgate has done miraculous work for England. He’s changed the culture and got the team and fans together. They’ve done better than anyone expected since he’s been in charge. They can play well but mostly don’t. Lack of ideas and players not playing in the right positions. Southgate lost the games against Italy and France - simple. The FA should get Klopp in straight after the tournament. He said he’d never manage an English club other than Liverpool but he didn’t say anything about the national team. I am not a Liverpool fan
