For lower levels of fluency just write down a certain number. (I.e. aim for 10~20 new words per episode) another thing you can do (which is what i first did) is to skip the writing step altogether. Just listen as carefully as you can and try repeating after somethings that you hear. (I.e. i used to repeat every word that i could pick out of the sentence. If the sentence was "같이 사면 더 변하게 살 수 있어요" i may have only heard the word "같이" and i would repeat that out loud.) Over time as you watch you will pick up more and be able to distinguish better between words which will make listening and writing down words a lot easier.

Are you actually able to understand 90%? I have difficulties to get out the text at all without having subtitles. IF I have subtitles its not listening anymore but reading the titles (and there writing down 90%, because everything is new)

Same here. Although maybe you could pick a favorite scene from a drama and analyze it and try to learn just that scene. That's what I like to do.

I liked to watch Return of Superman because when the adults talk to the children, they repeat sentences. Very good for listening practices. Also children make simple sentences which is good for beginners. The narration and captions all throughout the show help a lot.

Some dramas on Viki have "learn mode" where it shows the hangul subs as well, which I find super helpful! At this level, I wouldn't have enough paper to write down every single word I don't know, but I think it's still good practice for trying to catch words that I *do* know. ... Also you can find copies of past TOPIK tests online to study with. I'm studying the vocabulary for TOPIK I and using a past test to practice with (both reading and listening).

Once you start the video, it'll be in settings (bottom right). The only problem is you can't tell which shows have the "learn mode" option until you open them. I'm not sure about desktop vs mobile for learn mode. I've only ever used it on my laptop so... :/

topikguide./com has past tests and vocab/grammar lists, and you can find the listening sections on YT if you just search "korean topik 듣기." I'm not good at listening so I play the YT video at 75% speed lol 😬

Click on the settings cog icon on the video, then turn on Learn Mode. It might not be available on all dramas though.

Under "collections" there's one called "Learn the Basics: Korean" that shows all the dramas that have learn mode available on all episodes. Other dramas may have it available on some episodes but not all.

The thing that I did and still do what helped me so much is watching youtubers who are Korean/speak in Korean with English subtitles, mostly people who just film their daily life like vloggers because they have a lot of everyday and casual talk and conversations in their videos so you won’t learn unnecessary stuff but mostly usual stuff. I mostly try to understand most of it by myself and if I didn’t understand a sentence I would look at the English translation and try to learn from it. 🤗

Right! Me too. Also, I get engrossed in the episode and completely lose my self awareness. I’d probably stop writing notes and come out of the drama half an hour later with no notes. Something I’ve found great, now that I’ve been gradually learning for ~ 18 months and I know a tiny bit of Korean, is to watch an episode on Viki when it’s only 25 - 30% translated (usually hot new releases). In the partial-subtitle scenario, assistance from subtitles drops in and out thru the plot, which keeps my attention on the Korean being spoken. The occasional subtitles scaffold my comprehension and continuing interest in the episode.

For dramas: watch w/ English subtitles first to get the story down, then re-watch with Korean subtitles and vocab, esp. pesky Sino-Korean words that are often homonymous with others, will become clearer through context.

You could also watch shows in your native language with Korean subs so you could see how English phrases are like in Korean. You could start small hahah I like to watch We Bare Bears

regarding dramas, i think its helpful if you watch an episode with the english/whatever language subtitles and write some or all words that you dont know down, and THEN watch the episode again with korean subtitles so you can try to find the words and you also get to practise reading !

I find that (except for some rap verses) out of the popular groups, Infinite and BTOB are really good with enunciation and how words are divided in the melody. I think it's easier to read lyrics along with music for those two groups. Of course I haven't with every single song - Try BTOB's Missing You and Infinite's Be Mine or The Eye

I've been so frustrated with trying to understand my Kdrams and K-pop songs. I love them both but the words just blur together. I've been studying Korean for about a year and a half and can translate some words but I'm almost always to slow. MY lessons are working as I can understand what I read but hearing the language...ugggh "Hello My Twenties" was actually my best because the subject matter (roommates, college, taking the bus, restaurants, clubs, making friends...) All things covered in early lessons. The other shows, not so much. I want to thank Cassie and TTMIK for the tip with songs. On the first song link I found that I was translating and I could keep up. The pace and clarity of these songs makes it easy work on listening and hearing the unknown words to write down. I won't avoid my BTS, GOT7 and Twice and BP, but now I have a set of go to songs to work on that listening comprehension. Thank You.

Dramas - KBS KZbin page has lots of them. I'm currently watching "Love To The End." Also - Netflix is getting stronger with Korean shows like "Men On A Mission," "Busted" and YG Strategy Office." Taxi Asian has "Running Man" and other shows. I pull that site up on my phone and send it to the TV. Also, with KPOP, I also watch their group reality shows like TWICE Singapore or Red Velvet LEVEL UP. Then you can hear lots of conversational Korean between the singers/members.

I really wanted to get my brain used to the spoken not sung language before learning vocabulary so I worked on hangul to program the sounds and then watched a lot of hello counselor and similar shows and I have with the subtitles picked up little words here and there so I'd say subtitles is helpful to me. Now I feel ready for the next level difficulty so I'm on vocabulary words now to expand but podcasts is a great idea. So many dramas are so exaggerated that while yes it's interesting it doesn't feel real to me. Podcasts is a great suggestion, thank you!

I use the free app 한국 라디오 is really cool cause you can listen radio and also podcasts. Around 5 in the afternon (GMT+2) there is a program in the station 99.9 fm of a woman that speak so softly and I don't know why her voice and way she speak is so nice that make me want to listen very carefully. And I find myself understanding her even tho I'm just a begginer. I watch a lot of dramas but I never thought of writing down the words I don't know. I may rewatch one of my favorite and do this. And the same with the songs.

Excellent Cassie. Taking notes during a drama is a great tip.I am using Vlive fansubs included in the Naver Dic (very useful) and in the past I was a user of FluentU (when I was learning japanese). Actually Viki seems to be the great choice with the subtitles options.

I was listening to 21st Century Girl by BTS cause I love that song and that's pretty much the only reason I know what 하지마 means because I kept hearing Jungkook say it in his parts so I looked it up and found a whole list of words like it with a similar ending which was cool

I suggest leaning through web dramas instead of full length drama can be a little boring especially, you might have to pause it a lot to take notes for a whole bunch of 20 episodes. The web dramas are short and doesn't have heavy content, better for beginners or low advanced learners.

honestly both ways help. you should probably watch twice to be honest. you need the subs so you can follow the story. however as you improve you will start to notice that you miss a lot of the korean words being spoken because you're reading in your language. you also miss the non verbal cues because you're reading. its a lot of work to do that though so...

For me looking up and writing down every word I don't know is too time consuming and tedious (and I'm an advanced learner!). I just look up a few that catch my interest per episode and do it right away using my naver dictionary app. Then I make a flash card (also an app).

I think this method is pretty good but only when are a little bit more advanced like middle intermediate. If you are a beginner it won`t help much. Impossible to write down everything you don`t know because you actually know few. I went through this with English. Later when you have some knowledge it really busts your learning but not until you reach a certain level, you will just end up watching the drama alone without understanding anything. Is easy to pick up words you already have some good background but no if you don`t.

The only problem with Viki and Dramafever is that the Korean dramas are blocked if you are in Korea...You could argue then that I can just watch it on TV or go out into the world and hear it...and I can...but there's no subtitles then and while I do eventually learn something through listening it's way more difficult without subtitles...that and I can't go back and watch older dramas either...

i actually find it helpful to learn with korean song (the popular ones), because im a kpop fan (bts, svt, etc) so I have a lot of fun while learning to sing and write their songs, and it helps me with pronunciation, writing, reading and to learn some new vocab, that's just my personal experience, i do agree that the grammar sometimes can be pretty different but besides that, I notice that im even able to understand what they're saying, and it helps a lot with my korean learning process plus I get to learn and understand the meaning of their song even more :)

Honestly watching drama with subtitles in your native language isn't the best idea. (Yes I know everyone is different, but theres a reason pretty much every language learner agrees on this). HEAR ME OUT. You may pick up those key phases every Kpop / Kdrama fan knows, but it isn't going to help much beyond that. And unless you know the actual words and grammar already, or seek it out, you often times don't actually know what it means, you just know common translations. That's the other thing, subtitles are often relatively inaccurate for the sake of sounding more natural. And often times some things are changed completely to sound natural in context (i.e. it's not even translated, they just put in a completely different word / sentence). Also sites like Viki (And probably DF, but idk I use viki) use a method where it's translated from korean into english, but if you're watching with subtitles in a language other than english, these are likely translated from the english subtitles by members of the community. Being translated twice, even more will be lost in translation. Also, Korean sentence structure is so different than ours that the order the statement is delivered and translated is often reversed (the translation having the second clause first). So if you're trying to match the Korean you're hearing with the eng sub, what you're actually hearing isn't being translated in the subtitle appearing on the screen at the given time. But above all, it's more often than not just passive listening. Once you're at an intermediate level you should be able to watch comfortably with CC / Korean subs. You still have to make an effort to actively listen (you could still just passively listen and be reading the Korean) and make sure you're hearing what your reading and are able to hear it at the pace they're speaking. This may be tedious, often watching things over and over because of how the actor chose to deliver the line, speed of the coversation, etc. But if you're doing this for listening comp, then it's practice, and it requires such effort. And you will see in an improvement. Even Korean subs should only be used as training wheels. Once you see yourself improving, you should try watching things without any, even if you still might not catch as much. Also, it is important you watch something you enjoy but you will find that actors in their portrayal of characters change their speech (some speak really fast, some never pause, some mumble, some constantly yell, some use more slang, some speak in dialect, etc) and it's more challenging to watch a drama if one or more of these characters is a lead. So testing different ones and finding ones where both leads (at least) speak clearly will be helpful. And remember, this is just for listening comp, you shouldn't rely too much on dramas for actual learning. Not saying you won't learn anything new, but it won't be significant enough to completely replace studies. Music also doesn't help much, not gonna lie. Not if you want to practice your listening skills for conversational speech (which I assume, is for the most part why you need them). Things just aren't usually sung at the same pace, or even the same pronunciation necessarily, as speech. And instrumentals often drown out vocals (though some dramas having some frustratingly loud BGMs). I mean, think about it. I don't know about you, but I have trouble understanding a lot of lyrics in songs of even my native language. If you wanna learn the lyrics, go ahead. I'm not saying it won't help at all, and it's certainly fun. Oh and I put some time into writing this, and I'm not trying to attack Cassie or doubt that these methods worked for her. But it's true, the majority of language learners (not just myself) agree that watching with subtitles in one's native language is little to no help. And yeah if it worked for her, it may work for you but please take into consideration the points i made (or tried to) and try different things in your search for what works for you.

How about grammar learning tips? There are so many grammar points that show the speaker's intention, I don't know how to use them so I usually end all my sentences in the plain "아/어요" form.

Watching a lot of dramas and movies will help with that, too. Over time, you gradually get a feel for which sentence endings match which situations and moods and will start to feel more comfortable using at least some of them. Learning about them through teaching videos and books can help, too, but it works even better for me hearing the sentence types matched with various scenarios on screen that make it obvious what the feeling of the sentence is.

I saw this video about a dude who was making kinda the same video but for mandarin chinese, and for beginners he reccomended watching little kid shows for learning vocab, as these have more basic vocabulary and they talk clearer. then, make your way up to dramas and that stuff

But English is not my native language xD I am German, I learn(ed) English in school in the first place and mostly advanced through the internet (more specifically youtube). I am still looking for Korean youtubers cause I found that watching youtube videos in e.g French or Dutch also improved my language skills lol.
