John Schneider's portrayal will be forever iconic and he can take heart in creating one of the best fathers in television history. After Jonathan died, the show lost its moral compass. Also his delivery during the fatal moment was next level: The way he twitches when the heart attack begins, the tired walking, the collapse, the loving way he looks at Martha and Clark one last time... The guy should have won an award for this! You have to bring him back to Talkville one more time, guys!

That final scene: with the snow - and it’s striking contrast against the black attire of the funeral guests, that devastating Peter Gabriel song building ominously in the background, the imagery of the angel statues, and the perfectly framed and paced shots of the main characters and all of their subtle gestures and interactions - no words were needed but so much was communicated. Perfect. Also, a small detail in this great episode that was powerful but easy to miss: The scene at the Talon where Jonathan helps put Martha’s necklace on is agonisingly mirrored later at the Kent Farm when the grieving Clark takes his place in helping his mother put on that same necklace. Beautiful. 🌹🌹🌹

Having Jonathan have no words before death was good as it was a real thing that happens. A heart attack won't wait. It doesn't give you mercy. It doesn't allow for last words. The episode was so good because it gives psychologically realistic behaviors in many scenes. Clark's first step toward his destiny was learning that his powers cannot save everyone. It truly is his hardest lesson. This episode gets 3 roses from me.

One of the greatest episodes of all time. Also it is extra meaningful to me. My father passed when I was 18. This episode actually premiered just a few months after. I was ultra emotional when I watched it. And Clark's journey throughout the rest of the season really mirrored mine in a lot of ways. Smallville literally helped me heal from a terrible time in my life.

I literally had the same thing happen to me when I was 18yrs old and this episode was the first one I ever saw of the show and it helped me grieve my loss and I related to Clark in so many ways. I've loved Superman my whole life. Grew up on a farm just like Clark, only child, etc. My dad passed away just a few months before this episode aired; watching Clark grieve the loss of his father helped me get through my grief as well and made me feel less alone. I'll always be thankful for that.

This is the one episode I give 3 roses 🌹 the fact that Clark took the risk to turn back time to save Lana knowing somebody else would leave, is such a heartbreaking moment. Then to later find out that the one leaving is his own dad. Clark must feel horrible. At the end, he lost the girl he loves and his father. Great episode!

In the proposal scene, Clark crushing the coal into a diamondl, then fusing it together with his heatvision was a little nod to Superman 2 where Superman does something similar for Lois in the Fortress after revealing his secret. Nice callback to that. Jonathan and Lionel's scuffle in the barn was such and intense fight. Jonathan always had great determination to protect his family. This moment actually played a very key plotpoint in the 200th episode where Brainiac 5 shows Clark that it wasn't his fault for Jonathan's death.

This episode aired a few days after my 16th birthday and I had not been familiar yet with the trope of Mentor figures dying in the hero's journey. This was my first introduction even before I think Dumbledore died in Harry Potter and I had never seen things like Star Wars and I just wasn't familiar with this genre of Heroes and chosen ones as much as I later became. This was very pivotal to see this episode live and it was so hyped up and I was such a Clana fan and have all these feelings and excitement and joy that he finally told her his secret and they were happy and then all of a sudden this episode is forcing us to grieve in a very real way and very final way a character we were attached to in like a parasocial way as happens with TV shows we get attached to... it was just so good. It definitely wasn't the first time TV shows that made me cry. I remember crying over a book and a death when I was only like 10 years old but I do know that this was very impactful.

Correction: Lois & Clark had Jonathan live. For never telling Lana his secret, Clark was very quick to disregard the consequences of having her live. Anyone notice that when Lana dies, Jonathan is in the traffic of onlookers and comforting Clark prevents him from going to the barn to meet Lionel? After the time switch, Jonathan is seen continuing on the road to the barn after Clark stops the bus.

The grand 100th episode milestone is here. Such an epic one this was. With many SUPER reveals, intense and heartbreaking moments. Clark flying in the Fortress with Lana, then proposing to her is one of the most historic in the series. Lana dying in the car accident, one of the most emotionally intense for Clark. Even in the Fortress scene with Jor-El, never seen him so heartbroken and distraught. But also with Jonathan's death. Whose funeral is one of the most saddest in the series. But, also so beautifully shot and scored. The way Martha assured Clark that he was a man who his father admired and could be proud of, as well as look up too was very touching. The acting was phenomenal from everyone in this one😀😀😀🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

This episode…I remember watching it live. I remember being stunned and then ecstatic at the beginning. Lana and Clark are so happy, everything is perfect, and she finally knows and accepts Clark. But it’s such a short lived joy. The scene where Lex realizes Lana knows is so good and shows the level of his obsession. The episode puts you through such emotional highs and lows, that I both love and dread it. The show’s never quite the same without Jonathan.

I really love how they did the proposal scene. They could’ve easily had Clark just get down on one knee and pull out the ring but instead you get to see him actually assemble the ring using his strength and heat vision, while also showing Lana those powers. Such a nice touch.

I think this is my favourite episode of smallville or up there at least, but I was always disappointed that no one ever mentions this alternate timeline again. This is an amazing episode for so many reasons and they hit a lot of them in the podcast. A couple I wanted to mention… - Johnathan helping Martha with her necklace midway through the episode and then her trying and failing to put the same necklace on for the funeral… it’s such an understated moment and puts into perspective so many small things our loved ones do that leave a hole when they are gone… so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time - And I know we talk about the amazing Annette but her scene with Tom before the funeral always brings me to tears. I always loved that small scene between Clark and Martha and the funeral when they show the various shots of the Kent farm. Notably the Kent sign and the final shot of the calf walking along side its mother/father. It really was a nice tribute to Jonathon's life work as a farmer and a father.

The emotional rollercoaster 🎢 that this episode takes us on is crazy... I remember watching it live back in the day with my Dad... We were both like 😮... Me and my Dad talk to this day about how they should've kept Jonathan Kent alive and how they could've had Clark and Lana end up together instead of going the typical Superman route of Clark getting with Lois... I never thought that the writers really gave their relationship a chance because every time Clark and Lana got close, disaster quickly followed, which then forced Clark to distance himself from Lana to protect her and this episode definitely went to the extreme on that... Tom and Kristin's chemistry is still iconic to this day... I will say to be on the lookout for a nice character arc for Lionel 😎... Rewatching the episode earlier this morning, I definitely got choked up again when Jonathan died in the arms of Clark and Martha... To me, this is where the show got on a little bit of a decline (at least for a while) because even though Clark, Lex and Lana are the Big 3 as far as the anchors of the show, Jonathan Kent was the heart (no pun intended) of the show... All I know is Clark proposed to Lana in the most romantic way with an engagement ring he made from a coal in his fortress. His proposal to Lois was not even romantic. The executive producers of the show were the ones that said Kristin and Tom had great chemistry. They said so in the DVD commentary for the show. The moment of truth. This episode gave me so much sadness with Jonathan Kent's passing. Jonathan Kent fulfilled his deal with Jor-El that started back in season 3 premiere to bring Clark home. Then with episode 13 man I literally had tears as Clark comes home with the watch he wears and as he watches the home video of his dad and himself on the tractor and driving away saying goodbye is such a beautiful send off. I’m watching Smallville for the first time and I just finished this episode in tearsss. I’ll definitely miss the warmth Jonathan brings to the show. As someone who is trying to navigate living far away from parents, Martha and Jonathan have been my favorite to watch as they’ve done an amazing job in bringing that parental love and comfort that can be felt through the tv screen. This was one of the most beautiful and simultaneously heart wrenching episode of all time. It gives you everything you've wanted for the characters and then rips it all away. I always felt frustrated that after Jonathan's death, Clark didn’t proceed with telling Lana who he was. And post season 7, this whole alternate timeline is never addressed between Clark and Lana.

This episode is one of the best episodes if not the #1 best, when this episode aired it broke me multiple time, and still gets me when I re-watch it, even though I was expecting Johnathan Kent to die, everyone was so good in this episode. The next episode get me also at the end. The show was never the same after this.

I liked Lois and Lana's conversation. After Clark revealed his secret, Lana says it might have changed how she feels about him, and Lois says 'I would be lucky to be with someone as noble as Clark someday." Lois is often snarky and making jokes, but its always nice to see her real feelings. I also think it would have been great to see more Lois and Lana scenes in the series too.

I always liked the superman stories with both parents still around in Clark's superman years. Lois & Clark, Superman The Animated Series, etc. It was a bummer when they killed off Jonathan on Smallville. He was one of those characters, along with Martha, that really grounded the show.

This is one of the best episodes of the series. It is the best of early Smallville. From here, the show completely changes from a coming of age story of a boy who would become the greatest superhero in the world to a full blown superhero show. After this the other greatest episode of the series 100% Homecoming. In fact, I prefer that one more than Reckoning because I love that Clark actually retains the lessons he learns in that one unlike in Reckoning when he’s still too immature to understand. So Ryan, just you wait until you get to the 200th episode Homecoming. You’ll lose your mind.

For years in the reruns of Smallville I had not been able to go beyond the episode Reckoning of the fifth season. For me, one of the strengths of the series was the relationship between Clark' parents, each other and their son, an extraordinary example of chemistry and family that everyone could dream of having, also taking into account close-knit actors who played them, John Schneider and Annette. O'Toole.

I am not surprised that Clark never told Lana after going back in time. He couldn't take the risk, and Al Gough was spot on about Jor-El’s warning: 'Our powers may seem extraordinary on Earth, but we are not gods.' - Jor-el. I love how he explained that even if you change one thing, the universe will always find a way to restore balance. This was clear throughout the episode as the universe was trying to restore balance. Even if Clark had saved Lana and his dad hadn't got in a fight, his father would have died anyway because of the deal with Jor-El plus Jor-El was clear from the start- he literally told Clark that someone life would be taken in exchange for his. Also Johnathan was so hot headed lol - when he comes back in season 10 he recognized this and tells Clark guess heaven changed him a bit.

BEEMAN IS THE BEST!!!! I feel the same way he does about that scene where Lex sees Clark super speed in front of him. I don’t how he did it. But! Those facial expressions are some of the best acting I’ve ever seen!

When you go to IMDB and look up Smallville, this episode is listed as one of the highest rated episodes. Even though I knew it was going to happen, it still made it hard to watch. Jonathan was Clark's rock. I loved when Martha told Clark that a heart beats so many times. I cry every time I watch this episode. I loved the Superman and Back to the Future references. Chloe asking about how she reacted but the best scene was the funeral. Like Lex told Clark, "When my father dies Kings will come to his funeral. When your father dies his friends will.' That hit in this moment and it was sad that Lex was just in the background but he still paid his respects. I could keep going on about this episode but I'll end it with three roses.

This is one of the best episodes of Smallville, in basically any way you want to look at it. Story, acting, lighting, music, sets, you name it. One thing not a lot of people talk about, is the opening scene compared to when he travels back. In the opening scene, the song is louder/focuses more on the lovely/beautiful parts, but when Clark travels back to that moment later in the episode, the hurt and "never meant to be" part of the song stands out more. Such a nice touch! John Schneider and Annette O'Toole are both amazing, as always, and play such an important part in this episode, even before the death and funeral scenes. The way Jonathan tries to console Clark right after Lanas car crash, by pulling him away from her body and telling him there was nothing he could do, foreshadowing the fact that there was nothing Clark could do for him later. So many great scenes in this one, and an easy three roses! One of the best episodes of any superhero TV shows, ever!

I think this episode really showed just how much fatherly love Jonathan had for his family and how much he would sacrifice for them. Epic episode that personally took me on an emotional rollercoaster as I had lost my father suddenly in 2000. I cried when Jonathan passed away. I had never cried as a result of watching a television show. Everyone brought their "A" game and the episode marked a turning point for all involved. Three roses. 🌹🌹🌹 💛💙❤️💋💯

I'm right there with Ryan on his favorite scene. The funeral just encapsulates everything before it, as he said it ties everything together. On top of that, the song choice -- Peter Gabriel's I Grieve -- was the perfect choice of song. Sure Mark Snow could have come up with a great score for that moment, but I think I Grieve gave it that extra emotionality to such a beautifully shot sequence. I feel if it didn't have I Grieve playing you wouldn't get that high-emotionality that scene really needed.

The whole tone of this episode was brilliant. Absolute home run! The funeral scene, though, still hits me in the feels. Even after seeing it so many times. You can feel the emotions and the Peter Gabriel song just hits hard...and the snow! It was so perfect! And I'm with Beeman...Lex's "Lexpression" is perfection in that moment when Clark super speeds to the scene of the accident. Lex finally got vindication and knew he wasn't crazy and Clark showed that nothing was more important to him than Lana...not even his secret. SO good!! This will always be one of my favorite episodes of this show.
