Nice little tree, love that you are teaching to redirect the branches and avoid over pruning which is a very common error when working with this type of straight trunked trees making them bidimensional, and leading to a loooong recovery. Teaching style anf proper care. Thank you 😊

What a lovely tree! I have a few questions though: (1) Any idea where I can find those shallow terracotta pots the tree came in? (2) Your website doesn't seem to offer small-grit pumice (or lava rock) like you're using in the substrate mix- any suggestions on where I can find some? (Unless I'm color blind and you're using vulkastrat...) (3) If you wanted to shoot for a bigger tree down the line, I assume you'd just leave the original top, and maybe compact the apex for visuals sake? Thanks for sharing!

Tree is coming along nicely and we'll post an update in a year or so! The pot came with the tree, imported from I think Japan. I bet you can find pots like that online? As for substrates - you will have to work with whats available near you, but anything inorganic and a bit coarse should work (vulkastrat would be great yes). Lastly, if I'd go for a larger tree I probably would container grow it to create a larger/thicker trunk first.

Why?

@@bonsaiempire I was taught the safe time to repot is early Spring when buds swell, before the open.

That is the ideal time - but fall is your second option. You do need to protect the tree a bit in winter (make sure its not verrrrry cold).
