We are so thrilled to hear about John Bate getting his MBE. We visited the railway a good few years ago and were on the train going past the workshop's the lady sitting behind us overheard me tell my partner that Mr Bate had been there since the beginning. I said I saw him on the TV programme and wondered what he looked like now. The lady was knitting away and said to me there is Mr Bate waving at the train. I said to my partner Ruth they don't make them like that any more. He is a real tough guy and a good grafter as he said on TV he enjoyed what he was doing on the railway. Even though I never got to meet him it made my day. MARK AND RUTH Bridgend south Wales.😁❤ it turned out the lady,s son was an engine driver on the Tallyllyn.
