Ugggh I really REALLY hate this cliché, it paints the one getting the surprise as the one who's in the wrong. But the ones planning the party should be the ones apologizing, they were avoiding him all day no duh he was going to get sad about it without any context. The right way to handle this type of thing is to assure him that there is a reason for why they can't hang out. That way he doesn't feel sad and the surprise is kept.

Not to mention that they nearly put Lovelitchi’s friendship with him at risk by getting her to lie to him about them not avoiding him when it was VERY clear that he knew that they were. They should had confessed to Mametchi instead of getting Lovelitchi to lie to him when she told them he was upset about what they were doing.
