I’ve never ever heard a based Gene Finch sing like a Canary...! My dad had over 200 Canaries in the Paseo and several finches just like this color, but none could sing like that or friendly quite as the Canaries .. A very lovely one you got there. ❤️

Best Goldfinch melody I've seen... and I have seen loads believe me. What a complete package you have there.. BTW, I can't understand why a lot of videos have 'Switty' Godfinch singing.. Do you know its exact meaning?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! What a nice thing to say. Yes, the switty thing... I am not too sure about it myself, it seems to be a huge thing among English-speaking goldfinch breeders who breed for competitions. A while ago I ran a Google search, but all it came up with is that the part of goldfinch song which sounds like "Sue Whetty Whetty Whetty, Jack Wheats Ear" might (!) be what's referred to as "switty". I listened to a couple of switty videos on KZbin, but the only common thing between them was a relative lack of "croaky" sounds. Perhaps some commenter here will enlighten us some day? I'd be curious to know the exact definition as well!
@Blazemalta
@Blazemalta 7 жыл бұрын
I googled it myself a few weeks back as well. Same as you I couldn't get a concrete result.. but seeing your Sue Whetty Whetty Whetty I think you might be on the right track. I like that croaky sound.. It is sort of a must for a Goldfinch. Gigi said hello to Leporello.. I think they speak the same language. Is that spinach..
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 7 жыл бұрын
Aww, cute Gigi! - The salad is Valerianella locusta, or corn salad (?). Here in Austria it's called Vogerlsalat - which, quite fittingly, literally translates to "little bird's salad" :) It happens to be very rich in nutrients like iron, potassium or vitamin C, and it tastes very nutty, which is probably why birds love it so much.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. I've mentioned it in a few places before, it's been tried several times to introduce other goldfinches to Leporello, but he just wouldn't get along with any of them. In fact, this is the reason why the breeder I got him from wanted to get rid of him - saying that he was hostile and would never breed, let alone become tame. Well, tame he did become - so who knows, perhaps one day I'll find him a girlfriend he'll actually like.

I was wondering if you could use a finch as an alarm in the morning? I'm assuming it would be difficult to train for them to sing at a specific time especially if they sing for things they want (like treats) but does Leporello sing in the morning and wake you up?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
Birds make for terrific alarms - if you like to get up with the sunrise, that is! When the first spring season with Leporello rolled around, I had to install light-blocking blinds in my room because he'd start singing at half past four in the morning. The same thing happened when he was taught to ring a little bell whenever he wanted to be let out of his cage - he'd start ringing the bell at 5AM or whenever the sun came up. Needless to say, the bell didn't stay in the cage for very long. ;) If you wanted to turn your bird into a natural alarm clock, you could do so by hooking up a bright daylight-simulating lamp to a timer switch and setting that to your desired wake-up time. Note that in all seriousness, I probably wouldn't recommend that, as birds' bodies are very sensitive to seasonal fluctuations in daylight hours and it's probably best to try and keep them in tune with the natural cycle as much as possible, lest they get ill.

He sings beautifully. Been working w my zebra finch. Had 2. I givem a lot of space n whatnot. Once i got my bro a pal of his own... His new pal harassed him all day. Then when i went to clean their water, his pal took off. Ol boy freaked out and took off. Wasnt out of the enclosure for more than 45 seconds before my resident backyard mocking jay couple had already taken after em. So he's probs dead n gone. Gone for sure... Hope not dead . but lets be realistic here, yea? So now its just me n my boy. I hang out w em, but the guy sings in the mirror a lot. He knows my song. When he sings i chuckle in response. Since i keepem close and watch a lot of funny youtube stuff so he sort of took to responding to me laughing at vids. He needs a bro. But the last one was a total jerk. So here's my Q for ya, ms. bird lady... When i go to get em a new pal... WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR??? He came thru looking like he plucked himself but... Ive never seen him do it. He must have been picked on something nasty. How do i avoid buying a jerk? He is a little man. Great coloration but... Kind of a sissy. A runt, if you will. What am i trying to avoid? What am i looking for? Pls halp. And thanx for your work lady. Fuckin awesome stuff. Stay safe, kid

Hi there, thank you for your kind words, and no problem - what you describe is quite common! Two male finches virtually never get along. You could try adding a female, or even a female and another couple - both would work fine. It's also important to get the birds used to one other before putting them in one enclosure. The best is to keep them in separate cages for a couple of days: For the first day, just within earshot, the next day, just in sight, then keep moving the cages closer together over the span of a week until they are adjoing. Once the birds get along (trying to cuddle and bill through the cage bars), you can put them in the same enclosure. - Why all this fuss? Birds have different social behaviours and even dialects (yes, really) and it takes them a couple of days to figure out one another. By doing it this way, you also avoid the older bird being bullied. Another thing, it helps if the birds are roughly of the same age. Just like with humans - if you'd lived as a solitary hermit for a couple of years and you suddenly got a new roommate, you probably wouldn't be pleased if that roomie was a hormonal, unruly teenager, right? :)

Interesting the way he does not sway side to side when he is singing. When my goldie sings he spreads his tail , drops his wings and sways side to side . Does leporello do this.
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
The behaviour you describe indicates that a bird is trying to attract a mate/protect his territory, which often happens when there are other goldfinches in sight or within earshot. In this video, Leporello doesn't sway from side to side because his singing merely is a contact call: I was out in the kitchen and he was trying to make sure I was there. That's why he stops/switches to chirping as soon as I'm back in the room. :)

Thanks for your special service to the community of bird lovers and for those craving the vital beauty and harmony of the feathered brethren. I am one of them. It helps me get over the combat related P.T.S.D. instilling positive thoughts and emotions in my head. Yes, Dimitri was a lovely companion back in my distant careless childhood and I hold out thanks to him also. I can still sense his warmth, mingled with a barely tangible earthly scent of his feathers. Btw, where are you from in Germany?

Respect for holding on, PTSD is no joke! And thank you for your service! Courage and love for one's country are very rare qualities these days. - It's a curious thing, many people here tell me of feathered friends they had in an otherwise unhappy childhood (and I relate), it makes one wonder if birds are just particularly suited for companionship in difficult times, or whether unfortunate children are simply more receptive to the particular nature of birds. Dimitri sounds as if he was a great source of joy - perhaps it is time to make new memories with a new bird? Just a thought. - Greetings from Austria!

Hi! My pleasure. Here in Austria, where catching wild birds is illegal, young goldfinches have to be ringed two days after hatching to prove that they were bred, not caught. The rings are so tiny that they can only be put onto the bird's foot when they are chicks, so they serve as effective proof. The ring's colour denominates the year of birth and the letters include information about the breeder. Hope this helps :)
