@ti22183 жыл бұрын
@@harveythememe1458 we are pretty screwed. All of us. However it doesn't mean we can't still live happy lives. Hear me out. Sure, the power of just a few select people has a strangle hold on just about everybody in the world. Nobody is free anymore. The US staged dozens of coups, replacing democracies with authoritarian dictatorships. Money runs the US as well, we get a choice between one rich asshole or the other. No matter how many people support a candidate, if billionaires and companies which are their main source of publicity don't like them, they won't get past the primaries. The world's most sophisticated and organized protests, like in Hong Kong, were crushed with ease. Entirely peaceful protests like in Tibet don't work anymore either. Those who expose corruption in Russia are poisoned by their government. Obviously terrible cases where enough information is available to make a conviction, not just in the US but also there, happen quite often. Our own "justice" system allowed Epstein to walk a free man after at the time assaulting more than 30 underage girls in 2008. Read the report on the case, that's a real thing. Now, almost 30 years later, the court knows exactly who Epstein's accomplices were and yet the case is closed and the information they have is being withheld from the public. Another hope-consuming case in the US is Chevron V Donziger. Chevron spilled hundreds of millions of tons of oil in Amazon water which has left thousands of indigenous people without clean drinking water. It is so bad in some areas that sticking your hand in a river might get your arm stuck. Cancer rates are sky high to the point where entire tribes have been wiped out. Steven Donziger, who is one of the very few lawyers that stand for human rights, won the case against Chevron with more than 40 judges backing him ranging from several different nations, Canada included. Chevron's lawsuit was merely to pay to repair the damages they have caused. They have more than enough money to do this. Yet they said, and only after losing, that those countries have no jursidiction over their operations (even though Chevron operates in their countries). And, with just ONE judge in New York that had already been paid for by Chevron through lobbying, versus the jursidiction of more than 40, Chevron twisted the case in what they literally called "Demonize Donziger" saying that those 40 judges were bribed and blackmailed by Donziger. So, Steven Donziger has been put in house arrest. INDEFINITELY. He's been in house arrest for almost two years now with no end in sight. These are all just modern examples. If you look at history it only gets more depressing. But these are also things we have no control over. 95% of life is things we have no control over. The last 5% is what we do control. We can still do good in a small scale, we can take care of ourselves and those we care about. We can be kind to friends, enemies and strangers alike. We can choose how we react to the obvious decline in the world's ethics. We can choose how we react to the inevitable mortality that faces us all. If we do that, if everybody does that, then the small scale change becomes massive. "Death smiles at us all. All we can do, is smile back." - Marcus Aurelius
