சிவபுராணத்தில் ஒரு பகுதியான சிவனுக்கு பார்வதிக்கு இடையே நீ பெரிவனா நான் பெரியவளா என்று வாக்குவாதம் நடக்கும் போது சிவன் பார்வதியை நீ காலியாகவே போய்விடு என்று சாபம் கொடுத்தார்.
பார்வதி இல்லா நேரத்தில் சும்பன், நிசும்பன் அரக்கர்கள் தேவர்களை அடுத்து சித்திரவதை செய்தனார்.
தேவர்கள் அனைவரும் தில்லைக்காளி சரணடைந்தனர். சும்பன் நிசும்பன் அரக்கர்களை வதை செய்தால் தில்லைக் காளி நான் பெரியவள் என்று கருவமாக இருக்கிறாள்.
பார்வதியின் ஆணவத்தை அடக்குவதற்கு சிதம்பரத்தில் இருவரும் பரத நாட்டியம் ஆடி யார் நன்றாக ஆடி வெற்றி பெறுகிறார்களே அவர்களை பெரியவர்கள் என்று மாக விஷ்ணு கூறுகிறார்.
