Taming a 6 week old Baby Budgie

Taming a Baby Budgie | Most birds love Millet and is frequently used as a training aid. Bigger birds love almonds and walnuts.
If you are considering adding a Budgie to your home, purchase one from a reputable breeder or pet store. A hand fed and hand raised budgie will be tamer than a parent fed Budgie.
Be aware that when a breeder says they hand feed, it might just mean they hand feed and do not handle them and put them back in the brooder, which does not make the baby bird tame.
Make sure the breeder hand raises which means that they handle the baby and teach the baby to step up at the appropriate age and abundance feed. A hand raised baby should not be afraid of people and should step up easily. At first the baby bird will be a little nervous and would have to get used to its new surroundings and family.

Let them get used to the cage for 2 weeks, and start taming. 1. While they are getting used to the place, place ur hand near the cage for 10 minutes. Continue that for 1-2 weeks 2. Slowly place ur hand in the cage, ur hand getting closer to the budgie everyday. Its easier if u have millet in ur hand. If that did not work, check out the channel, alen axp. It gas alot of info about budgies. I have 3 budgies. starburst is my favourite. He is 3 weeks old and likes to sleep near me or on my hand. My other 2 budgies, sunshine and wink, are adults. They are still not tamed, but are getting a bit comfortable with my hand near them. I hope this helped.

When they're used to their cage, it's likely they won't fly out. They look at their cage as a ' comfort zone ' and the LAST thing they want is to be out of it. Of course, all budgies are different.

This is late, but what I would try to just put your hand in there for a couple of minutes everyday and talk to them. Once they get use to that, try to put food In the palm of your hand, and leave your hand in there for 10 minutes everyday. Once they start eating from your hand, try to get them to step up on the perch. If they put their foot on the perch for even a second, give them a treat so they get the idea. Once they get the hang of going on the perch, I would try to get them to step up on your hand. I hope this helped :)

Hi, a budgie or a cockatiel would be okay for a child as long as you are the main caregiver. Get a hand raised weaned baby bird that is already tame. Make sure the baby bird is take already as some breeders claim they are Handfeed but they are not tame. They must be handled and not scared of people.

It would depend on the store. A breeder is cheaper and more knowledgeable. Some stores finish the Handfeeding of baby birds but like to sell supplies that are incorrect just to make a buck or they are uneducated. If you go a good bird store that have knowledgeable staff then you may get lucky.

Help would be absolutely wonderful; So, I got two budgies a month ago, Blueberry and Avocado (They are green and blue gorgeous birds) and they're still scared of me. I can get Avocado to perch on my finger with me trying to pry off their fingers from the perch, even so, he is still somewhat frightened whilst on my finger, Blueberry is a female and is aggressive with me near her, I'm not quite sure how to make her no longer aggressive, should I just take the bites she throws at me and not flinch? I've seen many answers online although I'm not sure. If anyone has any tips for training the budgies very easily, please feel free to respond to this comment, I'm looking to have them fully trained before Thanksgiving, so I can impress my little cousins. They are well taken care of, fresh food and water every day (Food every 3 days because they have a huge container) and some toys. Their cage isn't too big so I'm looking to give them an upgrade sometime in the near future..

Patience is the key. Some never tame down. There is no timeline on when she will be tame or if she ever will be. Use millet or their favorite treats when they step up and never punish. Its hard not to flinch or pull back when they bite as it can hurt. If you can keep still then it may work. My female bites me every day. She steps up and then bites, she lands on my shoulder and bites my face. females are more nasty than males. Females are harder to make them stop biting. Try separating them for a while and see if that helps.

Don't do that straight away when you get a new budgie. First give the budgie(s) 1 or 2 days to get used to it's new environment, especially if it's young. If you just straight away put your hand inside the budgie's cage then they would freak out, because they don't know you and what you're trying to do. Once your budgie is used to their new surroundings, then start talking to them, and doing your daily activities near them. This would get the budgie to get used to you. Some time during that, it's also important putting your hand on the budgie's cage. Find out what they're like, and what they find comfort in. When they're used to you and your hand being outside the cage, then you attempt what this video's doing here. you're welcome (:

Sorry but if your budgie is not eating it needs a vet not millet! Baby budgies especially are curious enough to try any food so if it’s not doing that there’s something wrong. Miller has stuff all nutritional value. Try feeding it Pak choy, broccoli, mashed sweet potato or mixed fruit and vegetables. They love fresh seeded grass too. Any of that is better than millet. If your budgie only eats seed and millet then either the owner or the breeder are at fault for not serving a wide enough variety of food every day so that it gets a taste for something other than seed. Take it to the vet if it’s not eating FFS

hey it's 3 months later so your budgies are probably comfortable with you by now. if not, then here. all budgies are different. some take quick as lightning to be tamed and some take months. there are several steps to taming your budgie, and before you move onto the next one, be POSITIVE that they have gotten used to the current step. How old are they? Most budgies love millet and it's strange how they won't eat it. It could be stale or moldy. Try another brand of millet. The fresher the better. Is it flavoured millet? You can try oat sprays.

At first you birds seem like it won't eat the millet but my birds will eat/bite anything in they're face. So training them with millet should be quite easy.

Hi my ten year old daughter wanted a bird for her birthday and we went to pet smart and got a fancy parakeet. When she was brought home she flew out the box and we had to get her in the cage. Well my daughter had a sleepover so there was a lot of attention given to the bird. My mother who’s had birds put her hand in and she let my mother daughter and a few other kids pet her belly. When the kids would go outside or something we would hear her chirp. The sleepover ended and once it did we found her stuck in between the cage sides trying to get out. We got her unstuck and put her back. Then my daughter caught her with her head out of the side again and said no and she stopped. THEN about 45 minutes later I had the cage covered and we were in another room talking and all the sudden she flew into the room! Someone please help! How do I get her to stop escaping her cage?! She’s going to get hurt we are scared. I don’t know if it’s because she had so much attention and would let you pet her and etc.& then everyone left and my daughter isn’t in her room all day or what?! Since then she’s staying on her mirror and I have to keep checking on her! Any advice would be much appreciated! I was shocked she was so friendly when we got her but now day after sleepover she’s getting stuck and escaping:/

It's always nice to offer a different food for treats. It does not have to be millet. You can offer some oats or almonds but they really enjoy millet.
