Hi Dan, even if it is a earlier Tamiya kit, it will best a pleasure to build, I remember building the Rally version many years ago, I wish Tamiya would update some of their kits, looking forward to your build video, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les

I only recall the rally version from the '80s when I was a child not too long into this hobby; wasn't aware there was a street version of this kit.

Yeah in fairness I remember the rally version more myself, but I spend more time looking at those kits as opposed to road cars.

May have to pick this one up! Wonder which colours would be best to go for 🤔

I like the original red one even if the two tone on the bumpers was a bit weird. But I have seen 5 GT turbos in some spectacular colours over the years at various car meets.

Hi, can you help me? Why did Tamiya build these in the 70s with a motor like the kamei golf?

Honestly I don't know, but don't forget modelling was a kids hobby back in the 70s, so to have a motorised model was probably a selling point. Also in the 70s is when Tamiya got into RC stuff also. Have a look at @maxsmodels on KZbin, he does a great video on the history of Tamiya.

Err, in the 70s I built the Kamei Golf, racing BMW and several other Japanese kit manufacturers motorised cars. And made them work. Luckily with “Never Ready” batteries they would run out of power before reaching the skirting board; if the batteries even had any juice when you bought them!😂 I have a couple of the earliest Tamiya 1/24 cars in the stash, Countach and racing Celica. These have all the motor, gears, wires and switches. There’s also a strange guidance system on the front. It seems like maybe in Japan there was a system for racing them, like on a giant HotWheels track?

Wow, nice to still have the original kits. I do remember various control systems like TCR and AFX, but I don't recall ever seeing anything 24th scale. That would have been awesome.

I bought the Fujimi honda city turbo and that the same has a guidance pin and steering too. It was front wheel drive!
