Having owned a Frog as my first Tamiya back in 1985, my Dad used to have to take me to the hobby shop nearly every week for new side and bevel gears for the diff. Fast forward to 1991 I got a blackfoot and didn't have any issues. The blackfoot came with 2 ball bearings only and they were for either side of the bevel gears in those little plastic carriers. So from what I've gathered with those diffs is, use ball bearings and don't do roll backs! The way I drove the blackfoot compared to the frog was I was always going into reverse on full noise from forward and it would destroy the metal bevel gears very quickly, where's my friends hornet it wouldn't bother it at all. The blackfoot I never changed the gears once! But still there not a good diff and those metal gears seemed soft from memory. I also owned and just recently sold a Brat re-re and had no issues either.

This was my first real RC car back in 1986. Painted it black with the graphics, green clear on the ugly gold wheels for metallic green finish, looked awesome. Anyway, drove the snot out of that car, and found every weak link. I still have most of it minus the body, but what a fun car. Thanks for the flashback, I might have to pull out my cars and resurrect them. Great videos!!!

Just built a black edition about 6 months ago , used the MIP diff and the 10 turn brushless Tamiya motor . The Beetle is smooth and powerful and fun to drive . I still haven’t tried a lipo in it but that would probably really put some life into it. I also used. TBG polycarbonate body for the runner and to customize.

Nice choice Glen, I have one of these to build with a load of hop ups/extras to go on as I build it. As for the gearbox, I still have my original Blackfoot with its original gears and hex drives, I ran it on a black can sport tuned back in the day and pulled wheelies by reversing then jamming it into forward and never broke the transmission! I would never do that now as I know it puts a lot of stress on it but as a kid it was so much fun :) So i think you are correct about only needing the Thorp or MIP if using loads more power like a brushless setup.

Love your channel, very informative. I haven't been into RC in years I did have a MGT 8.0 Monster Truck about 15 years ago or so and way before that in the late 80's as a kid I had several Tamiya products: Boomerang, Hotshot, Grasshopper & a Team Associated RC/10. Unfortunately I don't have them anymore. I have a Terra Scorcher on order and I am thinking about ordering the rereleased Hotshot that is supposed to be available in the states this month. What electronics would you recommend for those buggies? I know I wan't more power than the standard silver 540 and an ESC of course but I have been out of the hobby for so long I just don't know what is out there now. Should I go with the newer Lipo type batteries or just stick with a NiMH? Thanks in advance for any tips. Oh, also what transmitters & servos are most people using these days? Back in the day I had all Futaba stuff. I live in the states BTW if that makes a difference.
@TAMIYALegends4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brad 👋🏻 Yeah there’s so much choice nowadays my friend 🤓 For the ESC have a look at the Hobbywing 1060, it’s brushed only but will do both Nimh and LiPo batteries. It’ll also run down to a 12 turn brushed motor. It’s cheap too 😊😊😊. If you want to stay with Tamiya for the motor, have a look at the Super Stock BZ, it’s a 23 turn and runs well. Much cheaper other brands available though 🤷🏼♂️ Radio gear is now 2.4g, again a basic set works fine with a budget sports servo. Battery choice is up to you, obviously you’ll know what 7.2v Nimh is, basically the same as the old 7.2v Ni-Cad but much improved in capacity and performance. LiPo’s are next level stuff, it’s basically like running your car on 8.4v back in the day 🤷🏼♂️. But you need to research them on charging and storing them. They have much more potential to catch fire, lots of horror stories around with them, but in my opinion if handled correctly then there golden. And once you go Lipo you’ll never go back my friend. Phew 😅 hope that helps my friend 😎👊🏻

Check out my MB Re-Re with yellow body: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4CkiHuKr5Wrfac The very first Tamiya RC kit I ever saw running in real life was the Monster Beetle back in the late 80´s when I was around 9 or so (family holiday on an german island called "Juist"). At that point in time my special interest in hobby grade RC cars was initiated :) I never got to own a Beetle back in the days. But when the Re-Re came out a few decades later, it was totally clear for me, that I had to get one and that it had to be painted yellow - just like the one on the island. I remember that a small racing track was built on the beach and raced with a hand full of Tamiya Off-Road RC models (Black Foot, Grasshopper...). So in my case it all started with a yellow Monster Beetle, guys 🙃 I was so blown away by the looks, speed and sound of the MB as a kid because I only had known toy grade RC´s prior to that...I´ve been positively hooked on hobby RC´s ever since 🤙

Defo don’t need an MIP ball diff My friend and i designed a clamp around the gearbox that stops the sides of the metal gearbox flexing (available on eBay) I’m running a 3S brushless combo now kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYi5dqlpbbVoepo Can go into details as to how it works if needed glen ;)

This is why I hate Canada so much. You can never get these kits unless you sell your soul. It makes me really angry that the only way to get anywhere these days is to start a KZbin channel, and spending every waking moment on social media. I guess I will have to quit the hobby I love so much.

So you think I’ve sold my soul? 😳

@@TAMIYALegends No, your kit was sponsored. You didn't have to pay for it, or you got a huge discount. The average Joe like myself, can't get these kits anywhere. They are "sold out" or on "back order", spending MONTHS trying to get one. Getting one on eshaft (ebay) you have to pay 4X what they are worth. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy your show... It's just frustrating.
