I don't know how I ended up here, but I'm glad I did. I've just rediscovered what I loved doing back in the 80's and will be ordering a new Tamiya kit tonight. Can't wait to watch some more builds and embracing my inner nerd. Thanks..

Stunning truck, looked a joy to build too. I love all the scaled down features of the real thing. The level of detail that went into designing that is incredible. Great to see it come together Glenn. Cant wait to see it done and in the cabinet 🤩

I have to agree Glenn, definitely the nicer of the 3 speeds, hands down! I built mine maybe 3 years ago (you asked me for the part number for the driver cockpit when I put pics on the Facebook group!) and the build was so different to any other Tamiya i have built and I absolutely loved it! The only thing I changed was painting the bumpers and side bars silver as i wasn't a fan of the white 😢 Bin waiting for this one! Another excellent video Glenn thank you and HAPPY RCing 😊😊

Never had the one of the 3 speed trucks, but I did build a custom rig with Bruiser frame, High Lift axles, 1.9 crawler tires and a F150 09' crewcab on it and made it into a SWAT rig. One of my favorite builds that I sold and do miss it dearly. Had great fun with it. For me a frame like that, live axles and leaf springs does it for me. I do have several frames in my parts bin that I could build a leaf rig out of, might do that. Great video as always 🙂

Just as a little extra, when I was looking for one to buy i couldn't find one anywhere! I managed to get mine from RC JAZZ, delivered to the door for less than £550.00 which although is a lot of money you get so much for it in my opinion! Hands down it is a nicer truck than the bruiser imo! I think that there were just fewer of them to begin with. I may try to send you some photos of mine..... BF GOODRICH tyre decals and light kit all 😂 😅 even have the marker lights on the side light up and in my opinion it's off key! Box art with probably 6 coats and 3 coats of clear and it looks absolutely amazing 👌👍🤌 Thanks again for another fantastic upload Glenn and HAPPY RCing 😊

Glad you enjoyed it. I remember receiving the original Bruiser kit for Christmas in ‘85. I agree it was a fantastic kit to build. It quickly became my favorite RC at the time. It wasn’t fast by any means, but it would run for like 30min on the 4000 mAh battery. Still have it to this day. It maybe time for a restoration. There are a lot of differences in the rere kits.

A Tamiya design classic ! It's incredible , the forums still discuss a Re Re of the original Hilux and Blazing Blazer .... I'm sure due to the popularity of Tamiya they would be on a winner if they did ... I think its said the original moulds are long gone etc etc but come on how hard and expensive would it be for this model giant to at least create a near as homage to those original trucks 😊

For me the fun with that kit (well the bruiser but it more or less just a different trim package) really started when I decided to actually start taking it out walking and putting some actual miles on it and started tuning it for better of road use as a trail truck/leaf sprung crawler. I also went for the cheap fake Tamiya light kit which I find works really well on that kit. As it gives you headlights that you can turn on and off from the controller, tail lights, break lights and reversing lights, as well as indicators which I have set up on a separate channel from the steering on my controller that way indicating like you would driving a real car, rather just when you steer round cornerstones. After fitting a hobbywing 1080, removing some of the leafs and the internal brings from the shocks, and getting some modern crawler tires with 2 stage foams and the tamiya bead locks I find it drives just as well as the much more modern RC4WD TF2 does (again with 2.2inch wheels good trawler tires). Now the old Tamiya is never going to out do a modern comp crawler, but with the diff locks in place and the upgrade I listed above it will keep up just find with other much more modern RC cars, you just need to remember it a bit top heavy being a hard body and plan your lines accordingly. Now I am not saying you should not keep in on the shelf and look at it as an engineering master as it is one, but like with any real high end sports car if you only look at it you are missing out on the fun that can only be had with taking it out and driving it as well. Just remember the thing is build like a tank so try not to run yourself over filming it, as think that may be where the name Bruiser name came from going by personal experience :-)

Hunt for an extra set of Lunch Box or Midnight Pumpkin tires for this unit.. .Those actually look really good that these... Plus, the softer rubber doesn't spin on the rim... They are a little bit mushy, but, actually averages out, on drive ability as the softer tire rolls over the rough terrain vs, the harder stock tires, force the suspension to do more work, send the truck into nomans land directions you didn't want to go....LOL... Another set of REAR hubs with out the "one way bearings" to then mount on the front axle for reverse action if you intend on playing with your Mountaineer? Perhaps, you might have some old oil shocks from the 70's and 80's era from the Tamiya buggies, like the Hornet, or Grasshopper and a few others, work wonders on the from for a steering damper, mounted horizontally like the rear aspect. I little stronger servo torque requirement might help to speed up the turning, but, looks cool too with the damper that actually functions..... There used to be a kit out there, that still required a servo for the transmission, shift gating. but, this kit, makes it a simulated "automatic"... They are an absolute pain the rear to dial in, but the kit comes with a few new guts/parts ball bearings/races, one way bearings and a dual sensor controller (plug in and play) connection.. and once dialed in, it is really clever as is reads the motor RPM's, from that sensor pick up, and then reads the RPM's of the rear drive shaft at that sensor.. and it literally functions and acts like an automatic transmission does... They offered a torque converter kit, that adds like an inch anda quarter (25mm to 30mm) in length to moving the motor further forwards towards the grill of the body, pending how you have the motor wires soldered on, might need to resolder them on at 90 degree out, instead of straight forwards towards the grill of the body for clearance issues. But the "torque converter kit" is kinda like the 80's and 90's RC-10 and JRX-2 hydrostatic spur gear drive system that runs a heavy gear oil in a tight tolerance of inner to outer vaned rotor and driven impeller spool/spur gear mount... Just a clever system.. that the faster you spin the motor, the more power is transferred through the friction of oil shear, in turn, into the outer spur gear mounting, then out through the normal gear train... This aspect allowed for all sorts of monkeying around with stall rates, for launching or dampening on the drive train to aid in preventing damage to plastic or brass gears in the transmission or u-joints and axle diff gears... I don't know if that small company is still in business or not, as that was like 20 to 30 years ago, when the Mountaineer first came out as the next best thing one could afford or locate over the Bruiser that was extinct and pricey is one was located in a back shelf somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

I grew up with these things, friends close by I found that they are what they are, fairly expensive, but actually reasonable priced considering how much stuff goes into it, they only had 1 truck ever, mainly they had buggy shapes ones grasshoppers, avante, boomerang, Falcons, hotshots etc.. but one they had was gas powered nitro, but it was easily the fastest 1. over 100 miles n hour which now would easily be out done

Thank you for the very informative video. I have both a Bruiser and a Mountaineer, both in absolutely perfect condition, and I love them both. It was interesting seeing all the changes that Tamiya made when they made the Mountain Rider. They seemed to keep the "spirit" of the original Mountaineer, which was great to see. I also agree with you in that I have always liked the Mountaineer much better than the Bruiser, even though I bought my Bruiser first. It was a deal that I just could not pass up. There is just something about the Bruiser's half camper shell that has never really appealed to my eyes. Though, I do have to admit that I like the "Hog Heaven" decal on the Bruiser's doors. That has always made me laugh! Oh, and someone said in the comments that the original Bruiser and Mountaineer had RS-550 motors in them. That is incorrect. They actually had the larger RS-750 motors in them.

I have Tamiya Brusier kit. I thought about getting a Mountaineer kit too. However, it is essentially the same truck and just a different paint job and decals. I decided to get the fake Chinese Bruiser truck and get the Tamiya body set and decals to make it look like the Mountaineer. I have not done it yet, but I do now have all of the parts. I had a hard time getting the Mountaineer decals but did finally find a set. Thoughts?
