Tamiya Blackfoot 2016 Kit 58633 Review, Issues and Mods
Hi all. Thought I'd do a video of my thoughts on the Tamiya Blackfoot on the ORV chassis and say 'sort of' a lot. This is a good fun RC but I've had a few issues with it which I discuss. I've you've got any other useful information on these then please post it in the comments. One thing I forgot to mention is that the instructions for this say not to glue the tyres on so I didn't and they ended up full of sand. I glued them after that and no more issues. As ever thank you for watching. Please like and comment :-)

Oh man. This brings me back. Had one of these original Blackfoots from the early 90’s when I was in junior high. Almost everything was a weak point but I had a lot of fun trying to upgrade. It was fine for what it was designed for, Low speed cruising around. Of course I was never satisfied with that so put in a more powerful motor and that is when every weak link on that truck came to light. I did learn a lot about mechanics from that truck but it was one problem after another. Mine was super fast and it was very unstable at those speeds and would usually wind up flipping it over and rolling it.

Hi there. I didn't have one of these first time around but I did have the first Holiday Buggy in about 1982 and I think that everything on that was a weak point! Didn't stop me trying to make it quicker and stronger as you did with your Blackfoot. Now that I have a fair few RC's I can leave the Blackfoot as a gentle runner and leave some of the others to take the high speed abuse. Many thanks for sharing your memories. Always interesting to hear what other enthusiasts got up to back in the day :-)

I owned 3 Blackfoots as a Teen. After about my 15th trip to the Hobby Shop in 1990, to buy more dogbones, the owner and I sat down and thumbed through pages of parts lists to find a solution... We found a complete Differential from "Robinson Racing RC" made specifically for the Blackfoot/Frog. It was very expensive at $90, but It was Bulletproof. I ran a Trinity 14turn motor and thrashed through atleast 5 sets of tires, but never had a single failure from the rearend ever again. Unfortunately, I don't believe Robinson makes them anymore.

I got a monster beetle and discovered how much I love this chassis even with its minor flaws... to the point I got a blackfoot coming in the mail (for my son to race along). For the diff I've printed a gearbox brace and will try it soon... apparently it fixes the clicking. It's true about the motor setup .. the stock brushed motor is perfect and the car is incredibly fun.

Hi Pete, another great video right here, mate! Oh yes, as you know I have the original Monster Beetle on this chassis and have had all the same problems as you! Funnily enough, I did exactly the same and limited the rear suspension travel to stop the dogbones flying out. I have a 21T brushed Firebolt motor and it's fast enough for me, but interestingly I'm still running the original 35 year old diff! Never had a problem in all these years! I have fitted the Brat drivecups and dogbones, though. My body mounts disintegrated and I made my own custom alloy body mounts, they bend but don't break! Great kits, but with their drawbacks as you have thoroughly demonstrated. Great advice here for all Blackfoot and ORV fans. Hope all is going well, take care, mate! :))

Hiya matey. Yeah it's odd that everyone seems to have had the thing with the drive shafts coming out and yet this is how Tamiya sells it. You'd think that they might have done something about it. I was thinking about your one with all those extra metal bits. I didn't want to go to that extent with mine if I could help it. I did look for upgraded body posts but nobody seems to make them. Anyway it has provided me with plenty of tinker time this one. Hope you've been having a smashing bank hol. I haven't achieved much other than a couple of drinking sessions and making this video. Awesome video Pete. I must say you make it very interesting to follow along. I think it is because you are just SO familiar with these rigs. Over the years I have made the realization that a slower rig isn't necessarily a bad thing. A lot less flipping it back on its tires AND a lot less breakage. Excellent video AND advice brother. Hi Pete, yes I had the same problem with the dog bones. I found no easy or cheap solution, so I went the hard way with the Ampro double-wishbone suspension. It's very expensive because you do a lot of changes and additional reinforcements to the chassis. But all issues were solved and I like the new battery door.

Thanks Pete that's some great advice here. I reckon Tamiya knew what they were doing when they released these vintage Tamiya cars in the 1980s. Nobody back then ever really thought of RC cars reaching 50- 60 mph. Tamiya released these cars and at the time 20 -25 kmh was fast enough. There was some really fast cars around in those days but not really for the masses and sold to anyone. Tamiya was releasing cars the average 14-15 kid could put together to kind of grow into the hobby and that's what Tamiya were about plain and simple just fun. Sure don't get me wrong I love Tamiya and they were very competitive too in the hey day of vintage RC.and I just realised this too that Tamiya were probably the first of the legendary hobby manufacturers to bring back their classic RC cars in the rerelease kits before any body else did . I think Tamiya started then Kyosho followed and then Losi and Team Associated and Yokomo Tamiya were the first back in the late 1970s. with the Buggy Champ which is now returning this year. Tamiya starting was it 1947 before Kyosho. Strange though all these great hobbies and interests we had in the old days were so way ahead of their time and so good back then that they are now returning. Old American muscle car's like the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger. the Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang just to name a few although in the last year or so both Chevrolet and Ford have shafted all the muscle car community by abandoning the performance car and using the Camaro and Mustang names on a electric SUV from each manufacturer. Mongoose bmx has rereleased some of their classic bikes like the Super Goose and California Pro but these are nowhere near as good as the original bikes back in the 1980s. Great video their Pete thankyou 👍👌

Hi there. Wow your comment might be the longest I've ever had! Yeah Tamiya were really the thing to have when I started out in the hobby around 1982. I had a Holiday Buggy and I loved it although there were so many weaknesses with it and I had to be quite creative with fixes. It's very smart of these companies to re-release these products from our childhoods as they know that adults love nostalgia and they generally have more spare cash than when they were kids. Some of the RC's are surprisingly good and you can put a brushless set in with no problems but others like the Blackfoot are a little bit fragile. It's just great to have all this choice now and I can see myself doing the hobby into old age. Many thanks indeed for your great comments and positive feedback. Very much appreciated 😁👍👍

Thanks for the informative video. I also have a Blackfoot in my collection, I really like it. It reminds me of my childhood. Everything about this car is pure 80's feeling. I've had the same problem with the drive shafts several times as well. Whenever you have a frontal accident, the drive shafts on the rear axles pop out and pierce through the rubber sleeves. And I only use the Torque Tuned Motor on it. So far I have always been able to repair it or replace the sleeves. Thanks for the tip, maybe I'll try to shorten the suspension travel as you did.

Great video! I had a Mudblaster back in the early 90's and my friend had the Blackfoot - we could only race for about 10 minutes a go as the Nicad batteries were so awful back then!, but it was so much fun. His diff used to slip really badly (and noisily) compared to mine, we finally worked it out to be the difference in the tyres. The softer spiked ones on the mud-blaster gave the diff a lot less work - I didn't glue them as allowing the tyre to slip a bit around the hub also reduced the load on the diff. I've just got a Monstor Beetle 2015 kit for a bit of nostagia. It's about 90% the same as my modded Mudblaster from back in the day, so looking forward to building it!

Hi there. Oh yeah the old batteries were rubbish weren't they? Technology has certainly moved on and great to use it in these old RC's. The diff is certainly an issue with the bigger wheels as I've not had an issue with my Brat. I hadn't thought about the fact that the wheels slipping in the tyres is a kind of slipper clutch. The trouble is that mine just filled with sand until I glued them. These kits are indeed great for nostalgia but a few issues if you want to run them hard. Have fun with the build and thank for your great comments 😁👍

Hi Pete, and another one of those 10min guru sessions on this classic chassis. Lots of details to absorb in, which may take a few viewings to note. It’s strange how on the re-release of this Blackfoot the rear arm stoppers where plastic, whereas the Brat they are alloy, I would have thought Tamiya, would have just left them as the Brat. Strange…anyway, I would agree with you, leave it as a brushed setup, back in the 80’s we didn’t have such sophisticated power systems, Technigold was king, and electronic ESC were not used, only those mechanical 3 step forward 2 reverse wiper ESC’s. I’d imagine the MIP diff is probably an over kill now,still, it will have a smooth action when you’re giving it some wellie on the golf bunkers 😊😁😉. I’ve not had much issues with my Brat, just the front steering arms are flimsy, so will be updating those in the near future. Love running my Brat around, just so many memories of the early 80’s. Great video, I will have to view a couple more times to take some notes of the small upgrades. Take care and best wishes to you and the family. Next up on YT for me is a fabulous Lunchbox that the great Peter Smith bought me for Christmas 21, hope you like it 😊😁😉👊🏼

Hiya John. Yes I tried to remember all the bits I've done to this. Those plastic suspension bits are rubbish but just cost saving I guess. I think that the Best is probably the one to go for on this chassis as it drives better than the Blackfoot because of the little wheels and lower CG. So cool. My first good RC was the Blackfoot. I had all the same issues. Very good basic tips. Reinforced body mounts are a must. And the dogbones are a vast improvement over the old hex ball shafts. But limiting suspension travel is needed to stop those annoying pop outs. What does ORV stand for regarding the chassis. I think I once seen it called The ABS Spaceframe, but I'm not sure. I'm curious what ORV means. This chassis is so classic, its been used in many cars and several colors.

Hiya Pete, love the channel! Oh how I can relate to all of the points you brought up!! Currently own 5 ORV chassis Tamiyas(fully restored 'as new' original 80s monster beetle, black foot and mud blaster that stay on the shelf, and a re re blackfoot and re re monster beetle that I drive extremely hard!) I've encountered the exact same problems with both my re re runners.... I added a couple of washers where the drive cups come out of the differential to stop them continually spitting out drive shafts(seems to have worked). I also used the extra washer in the gearbox to stop that awful gear clicking/slipping which has plagued these models for years (why didn't tamiya address this issue for the re release?) I constructed my own rear body mount brackets out of meccano after going through multiple parts trees in very little time! Found your 'steering slop tip' most handy as this is one point still to be adressed, thank you! Currently running tamiya super stock rz motors in both cars (standard tamiya diffs) and have found the perfect balance between power/speed and long term durability (yet to replace any gearbox components after two years of serious bashing!! Combine that with bearings, upgraded aluminium adjustable dampers and working lights and we have two Suprisingly good handling, nippy and fairly durable classic runners! Keep up the great work, you guys are keeping the flame alive for us big kids that should have grown up way back in the eighties!! 👍😉

I have a Blackfoot that I have had since probably 1987, but my question is, I all of a sudden have no power to the motor! And it’s not the radio cause everything else work’s fine, even tried another motor, and nothing!…. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m stumped, any thought’s or suggestion’s? I can’t find any loose wire’s or anything, and yes my big ni-cad battery’s are both still good!

Hi there. Ooh that's tricky without seeing it. If it has an esc then it could be that or the mechanical speed controller if it has one of those. If I have a problem like that then I usually swap out bits with one that does work until I find the problem. That does require you to have another RC that does work though. Hope you can sort it out. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Hi there. It could be any number of things to do with the electronics. It's handy if you've got more than one car so you can swap bits out till you find the problem. You are saying about using AA batteries but these use a 7.2v rechargeable NiMH or lipo pack. Maybe you haven't got enough power?

Hi there. Oh no I haven't had any break so I don't know about upgrades. Is your clutch slipping enough to protect the drive train? Not sure why yours would break so much.

@@PeteWylieRC might possibly be, do you have any videos on this ect new to the electric RC side, I did turn the punch setting up to level 4 on the esc tho could that be possibly why?
@PeteWylieRC
@PeteWylieRC 2 жыл бұрын
@@ImTMBR I haven't done any vids about the electronics on these. If the punch is high and you run on grippy surfaced then it might put too much strain on the drive train. With the clutch it should be fully tight then undo a turn and a half.

Limiting the shocks is a great idea. Those plastic trailing arms flex too much, also exacerbating the problem. The MIP diffs are pretty much mandatory. Stock diffs won't last, even if they are shimmed. Still, the Blackfoot is such an iconic and fun truck to drive/have.
