Hey Glenn The Subaru Brat ({Brumby} that’s what it was known as in Australia) was a hugely popular vehicle here. They were an awesome ute (utility) and my dad had one for years. They are rarely seen on the roads nowadays but none the less they were an iconic ute. 2wd rear drive (regular drive mode) and 4wd low/high range for off road. I can’t believe Subaru stopped making them as they were that popular. A bulletproof car with practicality 👍🤓🇦🇺

Paul Garwood Very interesting Paul 😊 Did they ever do the real truck with big wheels or was that just a Tamiya thing?

TAMIYA Legends ...Looking forward to the video when you get to that point. Have an old friend back in NJ I RC-ed with, he had the Grasshopper and the Toyota bruiser. Haven’t talked to him in a bit, but next time I do will see if he still has them and would let them go to a good home. He worked at the hobby store where we bought all of what you now have. Store was on American Choppers tv show a few years back, now out of business unfortunately. Highway Hobby was the name if I recall located in Ramsey, NJ. Be well, stay safe.

My std 540 motor in my original Monster Beetle stripped those hex drive shafts within a couple of months. I remember going down to the model shop once I’d saved my pocket money for them and then had to wait for them to come in from japan. Luckily the guy who owned Hobbins Models in Lincoln didn’t make us kids buy the full parts bags and would just sell us what we needed at a lower price.

I’ve got a very nice OG Brat. It looks ‘right’ in box art Red. I do have a NIB Re-Release though, I’m such a Subaru fan I drive a WRX as my real car. So, I’d like one in Subaru Blue with matching Gold rims. But my WRX is metallic White, so I can see how that would look good on the Brat. Wheels would need to look like new to match, maybe cheat with some aftermarket rim parts 😃

I have "saved" a few wheel sets with beat up lips like those by simply laying them flat on a sheet of 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper. With the paper wet slowly move the wheel in a circular motion, checking your progress periodically. The object is not to remove the lip but to simply flatten it. You would be amazed at how well the wheel can look after a few seconds!

The rear half shafts were always a problem. The "Frog", "Blackfoot", "Brat" and "Monster Beetle" had these shafts. Back in the day, we used a Thorp ball diff and Thorp dog bones to fix this. I do have a re-release "Monster Beetle' and a re-release "Brat". I also have an all original "Blackfoot" with original half shafts. I do not drive the "Blackfoot" because the half shafts would strip out. Do your "Brat" in red and box art. Maybe do a second body, if you can get one in white. That is what I think might be cool.

You won’t get problems with this gearbox because it has no diff. The problems with this box only affects the cars with diff because the aluminium side plates would expand and release pressure on the bevel gears. I used to run my brat with a kyosho 240s and a homemade 8.4v battery and used to kill everyone in the local car park. When one of my friends tried a similar setup in a frog, his gearbox blew on the 3rd run.😂

I use oven cleaner if I want to strip paint and works well. Sounds horrible but if u spray it down and put it in the sun for about an hour it will spray right off. I went through so many of those hex drives on my Blackfoot back in the day the CRP ones lasted a bit longer but so many clean and re greasing of those things trying to run a ridiculous amount of power through them eventually I just bought a Thorp diff problem solved I could have bought two of them with the amount I spent replacing the stripped hex drive parts 🤦♂️ I’d keep the original wheels as cool as mint or NIB unused/built originals are to collectors what fun is it to just put them on a shelf and look at them fine if it’s something rare or super fragile but I also enjoy something like this that was played with and enjoyed by someone it’s just cooler to me every scratch or user modification tells a story and becomes part of the character of the thing which leads me to the body I say go for the channel car white with the stripes in the Tamiya colors I say do the decals in a clear background for the hood with just the script in Red & Blue and incorporate the writing into the custom stripes on the side probably towards the back QTR whatever you decide it’s just adding to the story and the character to add lib a line from a movie “This is my Brat there were many like it but this one is mine” well actually it’s yours 🍺😂👍🏽

Hi Glenn, the tight screws try tightening them then loosening them but only!!!! Use small movement's and if you're lucky!! The screws should loosen( old mechanics trick!!! So keep it to your self!!!! Lol!!). If that doesn't work try a soldering iron on the thread's to soften the threadlock. Steve UK.

Just checked my spare parts bin, and I have the white plastic gearbox inserts you need. They're from my rere Monster Beetle, I've upgraded the rear diff to MIP, so I dont need those inserts. They're yours if you want them, my friend. Let me know! 👊

Hey Glenn, love your channel! I have a question, I own a rerelease Brat and I really adore the model. It's such fun to drive but I have problems with my steering knuckles. I broke both the left AND today the right one. Is this a common problem on the brat? I really thought this bit would make no problems because it's metal but what do you know... Any suggestions?
