Hi and welcome to this video where we pit the Tamiya XV-01 head-to-head against the new Tamiya XV-02 Pro! The race is on a simple rally slalom of 5 cones separated by exactly 2.5m, and the first cone is 2.5m from the start line. You can set up the same course and see if you can beat my times!
Both cars are totally stock, and as the XV-01 comes with a 27T silver can motor, I fitted the same to the XV-02 Pro so it was an even contest.
As you will see in this video, the XV-02 suffers from more body-roll than the XV-01 - I think this is down to the longer TRF shocks and the higher C-of-G in the XV-02 due to battery placement. Check out the XV02 chassis spec here: • Tamiya XV02 Pro vs XV0...
The XV-02 also seems to torque steer due to the propshaft driven differentials as opposed to the belt drive on the XV01 that eliminates that.
I hope you enjoy the comparison, it's just a bit of fun but I think it does highlight some of the differences between the chassis.
More head-to-heads coming soon!
Many thanks to Rob ‪@robbrennanrc‬ for the help making this video and of course to my friend Gary for loaning his XV02 Pro to the channel for these tests.
Note: The XV02 Pro comes in kit form and does not include a motor, body shell or any electronics. We are using Gary's basher Subaru body and I fitted a standard servo and 27 turn silver can so that the spec of the XV02 is the same as the XV01 for a fair comparison.

The XV-02 has a very very high center of gravity. You can see how the battery and servo are installed and you will immediately understand it.

Good test, Mark and Rob! Yeah, they seem a bit different. The body roll difference is definitely there. Is the throw of the back end of the XV-01 a result of worn tires or oversteer? And hmmm … soon I need to find out what that ‘torque steer’ term is all about and it’s connection to the drivetrain (belt/shaft/diff). Good driving by the way! Definitely sure I can’t beat that with any of my cars ☺️
@MarkBryanRC

Hello my good mate! Yeah, considering they both have the XV label, they are so different in design and hence different to drive. The old tyres seemed to grip OK, to be fair. I think the light rear end of the 01 adds to the oversteer and the longer shocks add to the 02 roll. Yeah, the torque steer is caused by the transfer of power through 90 degrees by the bevel and ring gears in the differentials. I don't usually notice it as much as I did on the XV02. Thanks for the compliment, set up some cones at 2.5m apart, I'm sure you can beat me!!! All the best, mate! :O)

Great video Mark! Rob had to be quick on the camera to catch those transitions in the cones 😂 I am surprised by the handling on the XV02 as I was expecting it to be a little more direct than your video. It almost seems to be set up too high for the tarmac! Looking forward to part 2 my friend 🙌🏻👍🏻

Nice comparison test between the 2 XV cars! The XV01 although tail happy is very predictable and easy to drive. The XV02 is more responsive and turns in quicker.. so it may require more precise input to get the best out of it. Maybe the results will be different when you get more used to driving it. Looking forward the the next test!👍😊

Thank you Mark and Rob as always for taking the time. wow got to say that's slightly unexpected (the time difference between 01/02) especially as previously you compared ride heights and they were similar, guessing both have recommended kit oil in shocks/diffs? may I ask, has the xv01 had the oil replaced in the diffs recently? (Lol, I'll say it, my first xv front diff would empty after 4 minutes let alone 4 years, they are terrible!!! lol). As for what I think we are seeing, (to anyone interested) Place your Rc car so you are looking at it end on, front or rear doesn't matter, now imagine where the COG is, pick a spot, as you simulate it going through a turn it will lean, creating a semi-circle, the 02 has a higher cog (Centre of gravity) Now picture that, so a larger semi-circle, which means a further distance for the car to pivot, this takes longer for the car to settle, while the car is pivoting the inner wheels have very little weight, but the outside wheels have not yet received that transitioning weight. Now this has been designed with the F/R weight distribution in mind, as once the 02 does settle she appears very stable and predictable. Me personally I'd look at adding a anti roll bar kit to the 02 (medium front, soft rear) I'm guessing as a starting point. You mention torque steer, or "wanting to go to the right" this tells me she's getting a lot of grip, and she's running very soft suspension and what your feeling is coming from the weight of the spinning Centre prop/drive line, again this will be reduced with roll bar kit, thicker damper oil, bearing in mind high grip normally mean tarmac/carpet, so the car would be slammed running much thicker damper oil and springs settings. My conclusion for the very little it's worth. Looks good, different from the 01 to the point of i could justify a 02 with my 01's, but that the reason I have two in the first place, they are setup completely different, but this is also my problem, i see the 02 with the correct setup for the conditions being a great car, but i already see multiple upgrades needed, a lot of time to swap parts for that correct setup, something I'm not really into, like i said i have two, i my LD version for the gravel and bumpy stuff my normal for car parks, i generally only run them after I've been out for a short walk with my scale crawler (I sit have cuppa wait for the body to recover, blast my 01 round for 10 mins) the other area where i think the 02 will outshine the 01 is in the indoor or very low grip drifting scene. Running the overdrive in the rear really interests me, would like to see the differences it makes, that and a sway bar kit, completely different car I bet. To anyone interested in tuning or just understanding why cars do what they do in certain conditions a paperback book was published in 2002 from "XXX main" - Radio control car chassis setup guide, A5 size (Part #B001), well worth a read, literally you need to know nothing, this 66 page paperback to teach you everything, in plain English. Again, just would like to say thank you both for taking the time and making the effort, driving these things under stopwatch conditions, with the Interwebs watching is never easy lol. Cheers and best wishes all. Fu.

Many thanks for the awesome comment and interesting observations, Fu! First of all, no, I've never checked the diffs, they appear to be working OK though! I read your points about the setup and handling with keen interest. At the end of the day it all comes down to plain old physics! But understanding how mass and rotation (of the moving parts and also the car as a whole) is a different kettle of fish! That book sounds great, we all need a copy! Yes, I think many an hour could be spent setting these cars up and adding the best hop-ups, but honestly I don't have the time at the moment. It's something I'd like to focus on in the future, though. At the moment we will continue to run them as specified in the manuals, bog stock and see how they compare - just for the fun of it! I'd like to thank you for taking the time to write such a great comment, much appreciated here! All the best from Mark...

I was waiting for that one! Have to say, I'm not surprised. The XV-02 has more weight transfer (body lean), making it more neutral in corners. The XV-01, although more tail happy, is more predictable... and QUICKER. For the large difference in price, I'd have an XV-01!! (IF I could afford one) The venerable 01 is time tested. Maybe in time, when mods come out for the 02, it will be more impressive.... But still expensive! Thanks for the comparison, me Mukka!! 🇺🇲🇬🇧👊👌

Hi Carm - you have good eyes, I think you assessed it well! I think things may be different on rough ground where the longer travel of the 02 might prevail, but it will be fun to find out! As you say, for the money I'll stick with my 01... for now!!!

@@MarkBryanRC I believe you're right my friend. Off-road the 02 should shine, with its longer suspension. Still a tough call.... If I could, I'd send you some new Rally Tyres, to even that aspect. But then, neutral Handling only helps On-Road. Could cause 4 Wheel Drifting Off-Road. Advantage again, 01. It will be interesting to see! Cheers my English Brother! 😀

Anyway as I'm a massive fan of the Integrale I'm glad it won in this challenge - no matter which chassis it was mounted on. I totally love the look of that car. You could have a point there mate, but I did struggle to get the 02 off the line as it kept torque steering! And the longer shocks were a disadvantage on tarmac, methinks. Hi Mark, another good comparison maybe a simple oval track with two straights, one gentle turn and one sharper turn, it would test grip, acceleration, braking and top speed but remove the more variable chicanes and hairpins. Hi Terry - the only cheap ESC Motor combo I have is a SKY RC leopard 9.5T. It's fast but I don't really like it as it cogs at low speed and is difficult to get to run smoothly. I much prefer the sensored brushless motors but they are more expensive. The best compromise I have found is to use a cheap sensored 13.5T motor with the TBLE02s ESC. I have a few and they are all great to drive and the batteries last twice as long as with a silver can! I find the Hobbyking Turnigy motors to be great quality and value. All the best from Mark.

Hi there Mark, another great dynamic duo production. I’m certainly looking very closely at this head to head. I’ve just finished building the XV-01 Lancia Delta Integrale. You’re certainly pushing those chassis through their paces, with the weight transfer from side to side. Seems a bit strange that Tamiya should design a predecessor to the XV-01 that has a performance loss in handling. As usual, a great head to head, looking forward to the next stage. Awesome my friend. Take care and best wishes to you and the family 😊😁😉

Hi John, best wishes to you and yours, too. I know you are gonna love that XV01! Yes, the 02 did struggle on the road, but I'm sure it will be very different when we get on the dirt and gravel, but it'll be fun to find out! :))

Wow, Mark - these two platforms really are like chalk and cheese, rather than the successor simply performing like a slightly improved update of the original. I'll be very interested to see how your relationship with the XV-02 develops over this autumn and winter.

They really are different, Del! Yeah, unusual to go for a complete redesign rather than just upgrading target areas. I'm not sure I prefer the new design, the old one makes so much sense to me. But yes, the proof of the cake is in the eating, so we will see how it tastes in the longer run! Cheers, mate! :))

@@MarkBryanRC I love eating cake. Like you, I think the older design seems to make a bit more sense, but it'll be fun, and instructive, to join you in exploring the relative merits of the two platforms.

Hiya matey. Hey I'm having Mark Bryan overload here because I've got your Wild One top tips video in one window and this in another. Really interesting to see the different handling. I have to say that the XV-01 looks more fun and I know that mine is lovely to drive. As I think I said before it does seem like better value all round. Anyway good stuff. I'm just starting my Wild One kit which is why I was reviewing your other vids. The thing I'm short of is an o ring the right size to stop the suspension spring rattling. I did order some but I'm not sure that they are right. Anyway all good apart from that. Hope you are having a lovely Sunday. Cheers for now 😁

Hi Pete and happy Sunday to you too! Wow, good for me that you got an overload of my videos! Great to hear! Yeah, these cars are like chalk and cheese in some ways but similar in others, if that makes sense?!?!?! Both lovely to drive though. I just felt that the 01 was more predictable and accurate. I've been driving so many different RC's lately that it can't be that I'm used to the 01, it's the first time I've driven it in months! Have fun with that Wild one build. If your O rings are the wrong size, give me a shout and I'll send you a few from my spares box! Cheers matey! :O)

Hi Pete. Watching Mark's wild one vids are dangerous. I now have 8 of them !!!! Rather hooked lol . G parts tree , G11 are 2 stepped plates . They are not used in the kit but they fit nicely on top of shock bottom and take up the slack of the springs . Done on a couple of mine. Cheers Dave

Nice vid Mark. Just wondering if adjusting shocks a little and adjusting the steering dual rate so it doesn't turn so wide might help ?
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! Many thanks for your thoughts, Dave! I reckon adding preload would reduce the roll on the 02 but I needed all the steering lock I could get to make the turns, especially the loop at the top. I'm sure I could dial both cars in better for the slalom, but wanted to run them totally stock back to back. They are both set as specified in the manual, and I thought that was fair. Anyway, thanks again and all the best my good friend! :O)
