The Panasonic 12-35 and 35-100 have been in my bag for years, and I've avoided the 14-140 for so long because I thought it was a cheap compromise. But the thought of that zoom range in one lens is very intriguing. Thanks, this is a great comparison.

Good video. It's interesting seeing mirrorless converts finally seeing the benefits of these great systems, especially things like image stabilisation, EVF and the indispensable flip touch screen. I hated the weight and outright clunky handling of my Nikons so I've never regretted switching years back. I've used the 14-140 for at least 5 years and it's hands down the best travel lens ever for stills and video versatility with the GH5. I use it regularly for pro work too when not using primes. It's a must have for any run and gun styles.

I bought the Tamron. Main reason for me was the stepper motor, but also Tamron's specialty is zoom lenses. I only disagreed with one thing in the video, the blame for the zoom-drift slowness of the focus. DFD requires hints to be placed into the firmware of the lens in order for the body to not fall back on plain CDAF, which Panasonic does not license so as to assert something of a monopoly over lens choice. On an Olympus Body with PDAF, the Tamron tracks the video zoom like the native lens on the Panasonic. Stills on either one are fast enough either way, so in the final sense, it depends on your use case. If think full transport video zooms, all the way from near to far, are silly anyway, partials quite interesting. So the slow video AF on the Panasonic body is not the fault of the Tamron lens. It is the fault of business practice at Panasonic. They want your money. With regard to picture quality, 4K video noes not require an especially sharp lens, because 4K only generates an 8 megapixel picture. What we hate to admit is the convenience of the all-in-one zoom for use on stills. When we go out, solely to shoot, we like to mount the sharpest or alternatively the fastest lens for the scenario. But when we travel, we have a choice, either to take the whole bag and take your time, often scarce-I carry 7 lenses, 3 of which are small primes-or cut to the chase and put up with the "travel length" zoom, small compromises forgiven. In the end, we agree. The results are not altogether terrible, but very good, not perfect.

I use Filmora when editing, so I recognized your intro/outro music from the stock library! Thanks for making me nostalgic for one of my old projects that used the song lol. Great vid! I was going to get the Tamron, but after seeing the zoom focus freakout, I think I'm going with Panasonic.

This was helpful. I watched a video somewhere with a Panasonic rep talking about the benefits of their DFD Autofocus with Panasonic lenses. They have all the geometric data from their lenses, so they can account for zoom when focusing which is why you see a drastic difference between the Panasonic and Tamron.
@quadcom5 жыл бұрын
The problem with the Panasonic lenses when shooting video is they are impossible to pull focus with. They are a focus by wire (electronic focus) which makes trying to keep a subject in focus manually as you either pull away or get closer to pretty much impossible. I've tried panny lenses in a pocket4k because I'd like an OIS lens. Totally let down when I realized this issue.

Nice Review....but from my experience, i am missing one point (may be its not a huge deal for filmers). What happens with the tamron when you shoot against bright sun or other brighter lightsources? The Panny 14-140II is known for its weak performance in that area. Horrible purble and greenish blobs that invade huge parts of the frame often makes a shot unusable. So, does tamron better here? That could be an advantage.

I'm a prime lenses guy, I already tried a lot of long and very long zoom factor lenses as travel or one in all lenses but none of them were good enough. The only one I like is the zuiko 12-100 f4 pro, but it's "only" f4 and it's quite expensive. I have also the 14-150 from Oly and honestly it's a pity, slow, not so sharp, it's only pros are price and weight.
@RobShootPhotos6 жыл бұрын
One other aspect you didn't consider that the Panasonic does better than the Tamron and the Olympus is the focus distance. Panasonic is 30cm where as the other two is 50cm. Considering the 14-42mm Olympus and Panasonic are between 20-25cm focal distance, I would be willing to loss a little zoom with the Panasonic 14-140mm for a tighter focal length closer to the 14-42 kit lenes.
@nessi54132 жыл бұрын

That is wired cos I actually see quite a big difference when I zoom my Panasonic 14-140 to 140 and turn its OIS off with the button (in-build camera IBIS is still on), the shaking grows very significant. Not that obvious at shorter range. But you did a test at maximum range as well. And that is wired, that you didn't see a difference.
