Well, I have both the Tamron and the new Sony GM II; the Sony is sharper throughout its focal range, but I still like the versatility of the Tamron so sold the Sony. I now travel with the Tamron and Sony 14GM...that's all I need!

This is what I'm planning to do as well. Buy the 35-150 and put it in my bag together with the Sony 14GM and Samyang 24mm 1.8. Or buy 24-70GM II together with 14GM and 150-500. Tough choices.

I have the 14/1.8 GM too and considering either the Sony 20-70/4 + Tamron 35-150 or the Sony 24-70/2.8 + 70-200/2.8GM2. I wasn’t expecting a third party lens to be able to keep up with the GM optics, and, as I shoot a lot of 50-85 range, the tamron option will allow me to shoot across the range without changing lenses which can be annoying in crowded / rainy conditions!

The same here. Currently I have 14mm, 24-70mm. I prefer 24-105 or -135 or -150 and f/2.8 or faster but no one is on the market. So I think my combo if I get Tamron 35-150 will be 14mm + 35-150.

Indeed, what tamron did is sort of tricky, the optimized for 85, so all the "standard" zooms will likely lose to sharpness contests in the 70-105 range (some primes likely as well). It doesnt really need to compete with telephotos because simply going as wide as 35mm automatically wins it when doing a focal range comparison. I was using it this weekend with the sigma 24-70 back and forth (upcoming comparison), and as someone who is behind the camera, I didnt miss 24 much at all, working with 35mm is quite common, and 150 is a decent amount of reach.

If I would start from the scratch the Tamron would be my choice. Frequent lens changes are annoying me and 70mm isn't always long enough for my style of shooting. 35mm is usually wide enough for me and for wider shots I can carry a second, less expensive and quite small camera and lens with me.

Im debating between Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 35-150. I mainly use my camera (previous GH5 owner) for taking pictures but i really would like to be able to take videos. Is the lack of OSS on Tamron a huge issue knowing that it is heavy, therefore should be more stable anyway? Also what would you suggest for wider end if i went with 35 to 150?

This was really helpful. I was worried about the bokeh and the flare, but both turned out a lot better than I expected. While the flare is indeed more prominent, I actually liked it for it's esthetic. The Sony looked boring. Great is as well how your recordings show the warmer color of the Tamron, which I quite liked.

Makes me want to compare the Tamron myself. If IQ/sharpness is even better it could be the better lens for our road trips covering more focal length. Having the 16-35 GM makes it a great combo too. Indeed I would have to rearrange my photo backpack because the 24-70 GM does exactly fit the height. Good thing to mention that. Thanks for your work!

tamron is optimized for ~85 hence beating most of these zoom lenses, if not all of them. it doesnt have to optimize for 35 since these zooms are typically wider, however being f2 @ 35, it can beat zooms because it has room to stop down. it's a funny little game with the tamron, I see it as a 70-200 replacement, at least for me that was the case, and it's been working out far better than imagined.

To buy a7r5 with tamron 35-150 and 20mm 1.8, or a7iv with 24-70gm2 and 70-200gm2? I heard sony gm lenses have superior autofocus (xd linear motor) and rarely miss the focus, where 3rd party lenses aren’tthat reliable. What’s your experience with tamron autofocus where you have to be quick to focus and capture the shot and also in low light how it’s responding? Thanks! ❤
@CharlieVN
@CharlieVN Жыл бұрын
most of your issues will come down to low light..... *most reliability of the tamrons are about 1 stop below sony GM's, so if sony's can technically go down to -3ev with the A7iv, reliability is around -2ev. Tamron is around -1ev. Cameras like the ZV-E1 or A7siii can go down to -5ev, so it gets a bit tricky depending on camera body. The tamron's have linear motors at this point and do focus quite fast. In practice, the 35-150 works well in low light, hardly ever misses, I actively use it. Sigma's are generally a notch below, and samyangs another big notch below, and even then, many are happy with the AF performance of the samyangs (I have a few of their f2.8's still and work fine in low light, but misses do show up more often).

I like to think that I'd happily choose 35-150mm in a single lens with matching or superior optical performance to the Sony GM line and never have to switch lenses rather than getting 24-70 + 70-200 2.8 coming at much higher price, weight and lost time while switching lenses. I don't think having 150 vs 200mm is a big of a deal and 24 isn't that wide either so I'd get a 16/20mm prime or a 16-35 zoom anyway. Then again, I currently own just the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS Mark 1 adapted to the A7 IV so I can't speak from experience.
