If travelling as a family, does everyone need a ticket or do we just multiply by the number in our group? It looks like this is honor system as far as how much you put in the fare box?

Generally, every rider needs a ticket, but if you are paying for a group, you can probably get away with taking one ticket, and then when you get off the bus tell the driver how many people you are paying for. The driver does pay attention to how much money you put in the box, so be sure to use the exact amount.

Local buses in the area are not JR buses, so the JR pass is not accepted in lieu of payment.

JR PASS works on anything that says JR, so if it's not JR, then you can't use the JR PASS, you have to pay for whatever train/bus that you're taking

So you cant buy the bus ticket in advance or this is an example when you dont have a ticket?

Normally, you simply pay with exact change when get off the bus, but you can purchase same-day tickets for buses departing from Kii-Tanabe Station at the Tanabe Tourist Information Center located next to Kii-Tanabe Station.
